The daily routine on the gunline was not always one barrage of fire after another. Some- times the clouds would roll in from the South China Sea and obscure everything from the spot- ter planes. In some areas the underbrush is so dense that the spotter cannot give a good evaluation of the target damage. The jungle growth probably slows the shells down enough so that the Viet Cong can catch them with their bare hands and throw them back at us.
