Plane guard duty with the carriers on Yankee Station is very demanding on the crew of a destroyer. The call for flight op- erations can come at any time of the day or night. Both times are filled with the scream ing of jets overhead, the muffled explosions of bombs in the distance, the constant re- laying of ranges and bearings, contact infor- mation to the Officer of the Deck, up-wind e legs for launches, and down-wind legs for general steaming. The errand boy of the flattops, Jets are catapulted from their flight decks and arc skyward toward the shore of South Vietnam where flares and explosions mark their targets. In ten minutes the launch was completed. The recovery would be following at any time. All ships stand ready to anticipate an immediate launch or rescue for the plane guard destroyers.
