Our forefathers established a new nation conceived in liberty for man. Generations have perpetuated this concept from the Atlantic to.the Pacific, around the world and into outer space. The cries of freedom, equality, and brotherhood ring steadily in the ears of man from the past and move with progress into the future. Man sought a new country in 1776 - man perpetuates this and seeks the universe and beyond in 1976. We the people continue forward. 2 .. .of We learn, we play, we prepare for what we will become. It takes all kinds to move our nation forward. Taylor County High School. Talents are used for good, sometimes for bad. Develop these to add to the store of knowledge from which you may draw for a lifetime. From Conostoga wagons to Ford Mustangs - From Orville Wright to Apollo - From high school to the world beyond - From learning and training to work and productivity - We plan, we struggle, we strive, we succeed - For the spirit of 1776 prevails in 1976. Happy moments - Meditative moments - Moments to remember for the year of 76. They will become your past for your future. 7 Work, Play, Study, Learn Taylor County High School offers many opportunities for advancement. Exploring, creating, seeking for answers are all a part of a day for Taylor County High School. oo Homecoming '76 The fun things of a day, a special day - Homecoming. The football game, the bonfire, the queen, all those crazy teachers who dressed up special just for us for a day all become pan of the spirit for a great year. The spirit of '76 reigns. M Bright moments of victory, of happiness, of progress will all be remembered in '76. For just as our forefathers toiled for these, so must we. Along with this success must come the bitter taste of defeat. From defeat and despair we learn our weaknesses and push forward to improve. We search, we seek, we find now for our future. The spirit of '76 prevails and becomes a part of us to make us ... we the people of Taylor County High School. In Memory of Mrs. Kitty Durden Life seems all too brief for all of us when we think of death. We know that it is inevitable, but we do not wish to acknowledge its coming. The great Eng- lish poet John Donne admonished us in his poem Death Be Not Proud,” that we should not fear death for . . . One short sleep past, we wake eternally, and Death shall be no more. Mrs. Durden, unlike most of us, knew she had only a few short years of life to live. She received this news 414 years ago. In the face of those frightening words where there was so little hope, she stood strong. She learned to with- stand pain and always held forth with gallant cour- age. She taught, she gave, she loved and she lived life to its fullest, never complaining. She greeted each day with a smile looking for the glory that was there. We salute her and we honor her for the cour- age she so beautifully displayed. She was a fine teacher and will be missed at Taylor County High School! 17 People Principal Being a school principal is not an easy job. It takes a special type of man - a man who is determined to do what is right and what is in the best interest of his students. Most of all it takes a man who is devoted to his work and TCHS, we have that kind of man - Dr. Ron Stone. He is totally aware of the students' needs and very much a pan of our school system. His outstanding charac- ter and unfailing humor are but two reasons why he deserves a great deal of appreciation and respect from our students and staff. Assisting Dr. Stone with the many administrative tasks of TCHS is the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Arbutus Blankenship. She has been associated with TCHS since 1953 when she joined the staff as a classroom teacher. Since then she has served effectively as Dean of Girls and Principal of TCHS. During this term she is filling the new position of Assistant Principal. She has been a loyal and hardworking member of our staff. Also a member of our staff, Mrs. Margaret Hamby has loyally served as office manager since 1945. Another prominent member is Mrs. Ella Mae Heartsfield. Mrs. Heartsfield joined our staff as secretary in 1973. 20 Pupil Support Staff This a staff of devoted men and women who serve the school with warm understanding and enthusiasm. These are the important things which we take for granted and sometimes think are unnecessary. To them we owe a great deal of gratitude. Mrs. Shirley Curry - Dean of Girls 22 Mr. Jim White - Guidance Counselor Mrs. Marguerite Nelson - Librarian Mrs. Suzanne Carlton - Librarian Mr. Billy Chessor - Dean of Boys Mrs. Elouise Gardiner - Occupational Specialist 23 Language Arts In today's world where communication is all-important, English is crucial. Our English courses teach students to express themselves clearly and respond through creative writing. Students are also taught to appreciate the literary contributions of great writers. Faculty members in Home Economics instruct students in all areas of homemaking from clothing and development to interior design. Students interested in vocational training to prepare to enter the business world may receive basic and advanced training in this department. We shared the sunshine upon the hill a thousand times, Not realizing that was the last sun of that day But as days have gone by, We have gotten to the sun we thought we were waiting for. While we were waiting, we weren't thinking of all The friends, teachers, and good times that would be left behind. Now that the sun has gone down, it leaves nothing but memories. But memories that lead to all our tomorrows. Future Homemakers of America The FHA members learn how to plan for the future and serve for tomorrow. The FHA members of T.C.H.S. certainly accomplished this in 1975-76. The FHA club was associated with various happenings and served for many causes, which included: Washing football and basketball uniforms, prepared Halloween parties for children, served at the Florida Forest Festival Banquet, and many more activities. But to top it all, certain members attended District II meeting in South Florida. One member received first place as District Reporter and a District winner went to State to compete.
