DEDICATION To Mrs. Allen Hart, whose skill in teaching, together with her concern for the progress of her pupils has made her an outstanding teacher of T.C.H.S., we, the annual staff of the 1954-’55 TACOHI wish to dedicate this yearbook. Many students in later years rea- lize that some teacher has helped him to a better understanding of life and its problems. We feel that Mrs. Hart has met this quali- fication of a good teacher. As to clubs, Perry has a Masonic Lodge; a Chapter of the Eastern Star; a Woodmen of the World Encampment; progressive Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, and Jaycees civic clubs; a Woman’s Club; an American Legion Chapter; a Veterans of Foreign War Club; and other organizations pertaining to the development of the community and its resources. Perry is rapidly becoming known as a tourist stop, due to numerous, modern motor courts which have been con- structed here. Perry retail stores are well stocked. Perry has a strong and well-organized bank, constructed at a cost of $200, ooo. oo. The Taylor County Frozen Foods Co., the Shepard Fisheries, and the City Ice Fuel Co., are located in Perry and furnish adequate services in their line. Perry citizens are justly proud of their public school system. Accredited schools, well-equipped and efficiently directed, assure education for all children in Taylor County. The huge Procter and Gamble plant, Buckeye Cellulose Corporation, constructed at a reported cost of $40, ooo, ooo, is now in full operation. The new pulp mill processes pulpwood which is manufactured into Cellulose. It is located in Foley, Florida, four miles southeast of Perry, and furnishes employment for approximately 700 people. Perry holds an enviable position where transportation is concerned. It is located on a through trunk line of the At- lantic Coastline railroad over which the famous year-round pullman tourist train, the Southland is operated, Perry being a regular stop. The Southern railroad operates between Perry and Adel, Ga., and between Perry and Live Oak, Fla. Two commercial bus companies and the Great Southern Trucking Company operate into Perry. Perry is located at the junction of U.S. Highways 19 and 27 and State Roads 20 and 55. Taylor County, of which Perry is the headquarters for out-of-state sportsmen is justly named the Sportsman's Paradise. No place offers better hunting and fishing. For the hunter--deer, wild turkey, quail, and ducks abound. For the fisherman--the Econfina, Aucilla, and Fenholloway Rivers, and various creeks and lakes offer fresh water fishing-- black bass, bream and perch of all varieties. If one craves salt water fishing or deep sea fishing and thrills, Taylor County’s southern border will please the most exacting. All of these are easily accessible from Perry by paved roads. The city of Perry is a prosperous town, rapidly expanding, due to its new industries. The City intends to intro- duce a bill in the State Legislature in 1955 to extend its boundaries. THE CLASS JIVE OF 75 A couple of days ago my crazy-mixed-up partner and I were wondering what happened to all those cool cats that graduated along with us in ’55 so we decided to cat around just a little and see what we could dig up. First we left for New York in Bessie, our black Jaguar, to hear the debut of Anne Faircloth who is playing at that real cool Carnegie Hall. She's playing that brand new number written by Bob Kirkland entitled Give Me The Girls . Both artists have agents who really dig it the most --that high pressure pub- licity genius Harvey Duckworth and that blonde bombshell who can book you anywhere, Betty Jean Parker I Our Jaguar's a real restless cat so we bopped on off, this time to Chicago, and while we were zoom- ing along we heard a rousing sermon from Olin Horton on a national hookup. Olin is backed by his wonderful church choir which is accompanied by Olin's wife, the former Carolyn DeLoach, and has such famous members as Donnie Rae Simmons, Mary Sadler, Shirley Courtney and Arthur Wilson. Ah-Chicagol The first stop there was in that neat little newsprinting office, the fabulous CHICAGO TRIBUNE Building, to see the editor, Jimmy Williams, and his on-the-ball ace scandal reporter, Lamar Poitevent. These cats really turn out quite a little newsheetl Man, that gossip is real gone I Reba Carlton and Billy Porter write up the most exciting song dedications column in the North! Today the paper has some very thrilling headlines! They read: Representative Linton Wins Drive To Make All Congress Wear Pink and White Striped Shirts. We also heard that Lynette has her red-headed secretary Rusty Hart wear shocking Pink while politicing. Due to all our rambling around we were starved; so we bopped over to that oh-so-select, ultra-fine Kool Kat Klub owned by Gilbert Jones. He's featuring in his floor show the Nola Sisters with their just-too-good-to- miss rendition of Shake, Rattle and Roll . Gilbert also sports the only Bopping Chorus in town and what a chorus it is! A few of it’s members are Polly Hicks, Joan Prysby, Barbara Ratliff (Wayne's very understanding about her career) Pat Wilson, and Rachel Linton. Eloise Jackson and Tommie Lyons are cigarette girls. All we could say when we left there was WOW1 Next we scooted up North a little farther to Detroit where we found quite a few of our auto-loving classmate The new monopolistic car industry, GMBD, belongs to none other than John Guess, Alonzo Murphy, Sam Beach and Roddy Dennis. They've practically frozen the market with their polka dot, plaid and pin-striped Cat Cars! We heard that Branson Fisher, President of the Federal Reserve Banking System, is a fiend on these things! After a little deliberation we decided the next stop was to be Texas, and just as we left Michigan, we passed Larry Denmark who was hitchhiking to Florida to attend a Confederate meeting. In Dallas, we found Buddy Hicks and Herbert Hendry, who have a direct pipe line from their oil well to their service sta- tion in Perry; then we flew by El Paso. We stopped in at the Rolling Dice Saloon” to see the chief dice- roller Martin Ellison, whose motto is Don't get all shook . The saloon's moonshine is brought in monthly by Dwight Raulerson, Larry Shaw and Don Borklund straight from Taylor County. Now on to the Golden State--California--and, of course, Hollywoodl We found those real cool Parker girls, Elvena, Geleta and Irene, starring in the new show Gentlemen Prefer Parkers . Ray, of course, did all the advertising. We also met Christine Poppell who is now Cecille B. Demille's oh-so-efficient sec- retary. San Francisco was the next stop where we saw the Taylor World-Walker’s Basketball team of which Louise Albritton, Johnnie Ray Gurr, Elizabeth Cruce and Jewell Horton are members. Janice Outz and Hazel and Betty Whitfield are managers of these cool, cool ball bouncers 1 Next on our trip was Los Angeles, and we went to see the Rams play. Hustling Harold Reddick was the star in the game we saw. He kicked a sixty-five yard field goal. One of the most ardent fans at the game was Laura Beth Jones. Visiting in these parts and also at the big game was Sue Porter who is a nurse. She's called the Florence Nightingale of West Point. What a nice place to be employed 1 Of course the only suitable place to end our tour would be in Perry so we started back on the long journey home. We switched on the radio as we traveled, and heard an advertisement for Bonnie Carol Vereen's new production. She's head of the Choreography department of Radio City Music Hall and she has Buddy Peacock teaching her cast the Southern drawl for the play Way Down Thah Maanl As we sped into Taylor County we were stopped for speeding by Sheriff Tommy McCloud and his deputies Joseph Starling and Robert Hunter in their pink patrol car. Oh well, we were home at last. Familiar sights were the Piggly-Wiggly owned by J. W. Brown and the Lonely Hearts Club operated by Paula (softhearted) Bird and assisted by Dorma Lynch, Shirley York, Louise Gunter and Jo Ellen Odom, The Girls told us Mary McGuire had gone to Germany to teach those cats the latest jive. While we were riding in some of Taylor County's famous woods we came upon Harvey Strickland perched in a real gone pine tree. He’s a top-notch forester now. We called the school, and Mary Ann Blume is Mrs. Hamby's able Assistant. Well, that accounts for all of our classmates and we're glad to find that they're all still real cool cats!
