I I I - --iq PEARL ARBOR Her engine rooms flooded and her keel in the mud, ex-LSM-161 r lay beached in West Loch,'Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In the early morn- ing hours of February 20 , Comman- der Service Squadron Five directed TAWASA to proceed to West Loch and render assistance. Upon locating the striken vessel, a salvage party was dis- patched, boarded, and while the ship's divers inspected the hull of the LSM for damage, radioed thier recommendations to the ship. Sal- vage pumps next were ferried to the LSM, hauled aboard, and put in place. Pumping completed, first seven inch nylon and then two inch wire were secured to the grounded ship's stern and on the pull with wire the LSM shuddered and float ed free Above Beached LSM before and durlng unsuccessful pull w1th seven inch nylon line Below LSM Wlth sal vage crew aboard pumped dry and then pulled free w1th two 1nch wire . . . . i i ' i .
