TAWASA, as a unit of the free world forces, contributed to United States efforts in the Western Pacific by steaming 152 days of the 206 days absent from her home port and trav- eling 19 ,845 miles. With every commitment honored itis with extreme personal pleasure that a hearty Well Done is extended to All Hands. Commanding Officer TAWASA 205 ft long and 39 ft wide in 1966 towed the mammoth 890 ft. long CVA USS BUNKER HILL. HI TORY .... In continuous active service in the U.S. Pacific Fleet since her commission- ing on July 17, 1943, TAWASA proudly wears the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Rib- bon QWorld War ID with three battle stars the China Service Medal, the Korean Ser- vice Medal and United Nations Service Medal with two battle stars, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Badge, and the Vietnam Service Medal with one battle star for her 1968 deployment. During the battle for Kwajalein she steamed ahead of the USS Mississippi taking soundings so that the battleship could safely posi- tion herself for shore bombardment. Her crew of 60-70 enlisted men and 5-6 of- ficers engage in ocean towing, target towing, and salvage, diving, and search and rescue operations. One problem - Jumbo doesn't,swim. Seeing this, SK2 Welsh jumped from the gundeck into the water where a worried Hawkins, SN Strucek, and BMl Austin soon joined him. Jumbo was given a line, and DC1 Pettijohn, BM3 Chitty, and SN Thumme, after one un- successful effort, hauled him aboard the Hollister, the inboard ship.
