But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyondg And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity. Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour. Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king? Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling? For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance. From THE PROPHET by Kahill Gibran Ta ble Of Con ten ts Organizations . , , . . . . . .5 Sports ....... ..... Other projects included working at a spook house on Halloween, selling Perchville buttons, and helping out with the Special Olympics. They also worked with the American Cancer Society, planted flowers and raked in the springtime. The KEY CLUB sponsored many special projects during the school year. THey had a school dance which was held at the East Tawas Community Building, and then held a Halloween party for the little ones. They also put up the Christmas decorations at the City parks, and then had a tree lighting ceremony in which the pep band played Christmas songs. ATHLETICS arsity Football The 1977 Braves far surpassed the highest expectations of the coaching staff. By finishing the season with a fine 7-2 record the Braves were also undefeated and N.E.M.C. Champions. A young team of seven seniors and nineteen underclassmen continued to improve after an opening loss. Highlighting their progress was an exciting overtime victory over Standish for the league title and a lopsided 40-0 victory over traditional rival Oscoda on the Owls home field. 'J ffgfs Varsity Basketball vga: The 1977-78 Varsity Basketball team was a hard working group of young men. As the season progressed, these young and inexperienced cagers showed a tremendous amount of improvement. Their spirit and enthusiasm showed each time they met their opponents on the courts. That's what the record book shows for J.V. Basketball, 1978. What it doesn't show is a group of hard working and dedicated young athletes that made 1978 a great year for J.V. Basketball. We won 12 games, yes, but I believe our greatest learning came from our losses. We learned that with hard work, open eyes, hustle, and con- fidence we can play well against anyone. I believe the future of basketball at Tawas is brighter because of these young men! Not only did the girls have to play under a new coach, they also had to adjust to new members of the team after losing four starting players from last years team. In spite of these handicaps, they still managed to post a season record of 9 wins and 12 losses. The highlight of the season for the girls came when they defeated Oscoda, who was previously 19 and O for the season, in the first game of the regional championships. Like the Varsity, the J.V.'s also had to get used to a new coach and it was through their hard work, practice, and determination, that they were able to finish the season on a winning note. In the early spring over 300 students participated in the Individual Events section of the Forensics program. Students in all English college prepatory classes took part at the classroom level under the supervision of the English and speech teachers. The best speakers from each event were chosen from the classroom participants, and these people then took part in a double elimination tournament held at TAHS on March 15. Each student spoke before two qualified judges, who were selected from the community. All Forensics Individual Events activities were under the direction of Mrs. Ann Reasner and Mrs. Barbara Ericksen. lst place: Gary Norwood, Serious, Bruce Bolen, Informative: Lee Starling, Radio broadcasting: Jeff Kolts, Extemporeg Keith McCready, Original oratoryg Lexi Gage, impromptu: Debbi Knight, Humorous: Jackie Abbott, Storytelling. sm sgim Top row left to right: Shelly Look, Tammy Brackenbury, Toby Caderette, Sue Whitford.
