It is situated at the head ofthe Gulf of Volos, north of the island of Evvoia. Volos is not on the site of any ancient town, but lies near the ruins of Demetrias, Pegasea, and Ioochus, from which legend tells us, Jason and the Argonauts sailed, in quest of the Golden Fleece. Demetrias waS known as one of the three fetters of Greece, Khalis and Corinth being the other two, by which Macedonian Kings kept Greece in subjugation.
