ROBERT LEE MYERS Principal To the Ea'iiorr: A dream has come true! Twenty-three years ago, a school of very modest proportions opened its two doors in a house on Rodney Street to admit a few pupils. Last fall the multiple successors of those first few students swarmed over the fifteen acres of Sedgely and entered the six doors of a large building to begin a new year. During those two decades, plans for enlarging the school had assumed many forms in the minds of those who could envision only growth, progress, and expansion for Tatnall. As the number of students increased and varied activities augumented the curriculum, the school actually spilled over into three other buildings, parks, the Y.W.C.A., and even parts of private homes. At times the dream became a nightmare! But with Sedgely came the realization of the hopes and aspirations of all in whose hearts Tatnall holds such a promi- nent place. A dream has become a reality,-the -school acquired property admirably adapted to its diversified activities, and, most important, room in which to continue its growth. There is a peculiar quality about Tatnall which is found in few other schools, a feeling of oneness, of unity, of being members, one of another. Perhaps the home atmosphere of the early days produced this feeling which has been passed on, subconsciously, from class to class through the years. How very significant to have the new school once again located in a home and sur- rounded by lawns which have afforded play space for sisters, cousins, friends, for years. Kitchens have become laboratories, dining rooms are class rooms, bedrooms are libraries, but the home is still a busy home. Tag and hide-and- seek have given way to hockey and tennis, but the spirit is the same, for is it not true that the participants are still sisters, cousins, friends? And, as such, each member of the school is, and always will be, a member of the family, the Tatnall School family, in the new family home, Sedgely. Harriette B. Griffith. VALEDICTORY The Tatnall School has a new home among the lovely gardens and trees of Sedgely. Physically it is entirely different, but spiritually it is the same. That spirit of loving consideration for each individual which pervaded 1500 Rodney for so many years is present at Sedgely. How did it come? Not with the moving vans carrying books and old desks, and certainly not with the new equipment. It came with the Staff, the teachers and Mrs. Myers, but most of all with Mrs. Tatnall. We of the Class of 1955 thank the Tatnall School for the worthwhile education we have received, but we thank her more for having the privilege of living under the influence of the Tatnall Spirit. With our farewell we look forward. to new friends and teachers, but we shall never forget the old ones. To a crystal ball I made this plea And six small pictures answered me. I saw the gleaming white Capitol dome Where Senator McWhorter made herself at home. Then appeared a shop sign , Gowns by Judy Ecklesl' The sort of place where any gown would cost a lot of shekels. Next I saw the lights Hash up for a T.V. showg Elizabeth was starred in it with her singing bow! A figure in a cap and gown proved itself to be None other than a French prof, Ann Morris, Ph.D. Then I saw Sue Johnson, looking mighty pretty. Dancing near the footlights at Radio City. The crystal ball clouded and then showed plain Tatnall School and its headmistress-it was Mary Elaine. This is the futurama the crystal showed me When I asked, Please tell me whither go the class of '53? VOYAGE OF THE SENIOR CLASS Ann Morris started it all by coming to kindergarten, and was soon joined by Mary Elaine jones in the middle of that year fand a long time ago it was, tooj. Elizabeth Webster arrived in the third grade, and has intrigued us ever since by drawing horses on her erasers. Suzanne johnson and her Ipana smile came the next year. It was a little dull for a while, but in the sixth grade judy'Eckles joined forces with us, and there hasn't been a dull moment or a full lunch bag since. Georgia McWhorter journeyed up from Odessa in the tenth grade and has kept right on coming. About this time, what with overwork and the weather, we became in- spired and edited a little publicationf ?j called the T-Bone . The ninth grade was the staff, and we all made ourselves officers. The T-Bone had a good two-month run with a complete sell-out fwell, almost completej. Our master- piece has never been duplicated and remains a highlight in the history of T.T.S. Our happy family was established, and we joined our merry little voices in the most inhuman sounds that ever came from any Senior Room. The next class will please notice that Teddy, the Bear, has finally succumbed from shattered nerves with complications and is silently shedding sawdust in despair. REQUIESCAT IN PACE! Ann Morris gll l THE OPENING OF SEDCELY On Friday morning, September 12, 1952, Sedgely was formally dedicated as the future home of Tatnall School. The ceremony was held on the front lawn at the begin- ning of the school day with faculty and students, as well as parents and friends of the school, present. Mrs. Tatnall conducted the traditional opening exercises, and Mrs. Myers introduced the speakers. Dr. john S. Beekley, president of the Board of Trustees, spoke briefly. Mr. William S. Rupert gave a short history of Sedgely, his boyhood home, and expressed his pleasure that it would still be used in many capacities by young people. Educational principles and aims were stressed by Mr. Wilmot R. Jones, headmaster of Friends School. The exercises were closed with a dedication prayer offered by the Rev. W. Brooke Stabler, headmaster of Tower High School, after which guests were invited to make a tour of the buildings. Sedgely has meant a widening of the horizons envisioned at 1500 Rodney. In the old school, the seniors found sanctuary in the library which doubled as a study hall. Now Mrs. Cavanagh is full-time librarian in a large, attractive, and well-equipped library, and the seniors have their own room, complete with the Tatnall teddy bear. At 1500 Rodney, science experiments were carried on wherever a handy sink and shelf offered the barest essentials until a year ago when new, specially designed tables were installed in the back room of the first floor. Art classes were conducted in the largest available space, often spilling over into the assembly room and the middle school library. Now the garage at Sedgely has taken on a nobler aspect,-an adequately equipped laboratory and a large, sunny art room have replaced the grease pit and car stalls. Incidentally, for dances, the entire building can be used as a unit, and word from the younger generation confirms the theory that the floor is excellent for dancing. Another innovation is the purchase of two bright yellow Tatnall School buses, driven by Alvin and Joe. For the first time in years, grades three through twelve are housed under one roof so that older and younger Tatnall sisters may become better acquainted. Surrounding the buildings are fifteen acres of beautifully planted grounds. Mrs. Marmion suggested that the students donate bulbs which will be planted in time to bloom for the spring garden tours. Behind the science and art building a regulation hockey field has been seeded and will be ready for use next fall. Close at hand is the Change House , with showers and lockers for the use of visiting and home teams. Scampering in and out are two lively kittens who, apparently, have adopted the school as their permanent home and are absorbing every- thing from cat food to history lectures. We are enjoying our first year at Sedgely. We look forward to a bright and in- teresting future for Tatnall, hoping that our new surroundings will serve to enrich our traditional heritage. 5 4 L. to R.-Louise MacCreary, Cynthia Oswald, Joyce Miller. OUR LOWER SCHOOL The interior of 2506 presented a bright new face for 1952-53. The pre- school furniture had been painted a pretty blue, and window draperies added a touch of color to the rooms. Tables which allowed more stretching of the ever- growing seven-year-old legs replaced the desks in the second grade. First grade enrollment increased sufliciently this year to make, it necessary to rearrange the classrooms. The changes were made so that the kindergarten, both sections of first grade, and second grade, remain on the second floor. Nursery, pre-kindergarten, and the art room are on the first floor. Wonderful new playground equipment, which includes a large metalcat- walk and jungle gym, swings, seesaws, and hoops, made recess time a period for fun and exercise. The free and organized play under the direction of Miss Diane Marvin has progressed from hikes and football games in the ,fall to the timely games of baseball and hoop-rolling in the spring. Many interesting trips were taken by all classes. The nursery and pre- kindergarten are frequent visitors to the zoo. Kindergarten children are look- ing forward to their annual visit to a farm, which is always followed by a barnyard project. The first grades were thrilled by the display of stuffed wild animals which Mr. William Carpenter had captured in Africa and South America. Second grade visited Borden's Ice Cream Company to see how their favorite dessert is made. The grand climax of their trip was free samples. The Structural Arithmetic continues to be of great importance in our Lower School. The second grade material has been received this year, and excellent results have been obtained from its use. The faculty has been fortunate this year in having several In Service Training courses. Discussions with Mrs. Collins of the Reading Clinic, lec- tures on Classroom Behavior Problems by Dr. Jerome Kay, psychiatrist, and the testing and weekly consultations with Dr. joseph Jastak, prominent child psychologist, have been of invaluable aid to the teachers and parents in guiding the children. Careful study, hard work, and happy play, have made our seventh year in the building at 2506 Delaware Avenue a great success. SCIENCE CLUB On December 12, 1952, the first meeting of the Science Club came to order. This year there are twelve members: Alice Beasley, Addie Lawrence, Sandra Seely, Evelyn Swezey, Elsie Dodds, Lisa Canby, Dorsey Reese, Tina Hawke and Phyllis Maske, from the Eighth Grade, Helen Peemoeller from the Ninth Grade, and Louise MacCreary and Joyce Miller from the Eleventh Grade. Officers were electer during the first meeting. The president is Joyce Miller and the secretary is Lisa Canby. Mrs. Lynch is our Faculty Adviser. Projects were discussed concerning the planets, composition of air, clouds, plastolene clay flowers, plastic scenes and puppets. It was decided that Alice and Joyce would work on the plastolene clayg Louise and Helen on the plastic scenes, Addie and Dorsey on the planets, Sandy and Evelyn on the different stages of life on the earth, Tina and Phyllis on the composition of the air, and Elsie and Lisa on the cloud project. We also went on a trip to Washington, D. C. There we saw several places of interest including the Smithsonian Institute, the Archives Building and the National Art Gallery. All in all we have had a very successful year in the Science Club and we hope that next year's club will have as much fun as we have had. THE STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION The Students' Association is an association which directs all Upper School extra-curricular activities. Everyone in the six upper grades of the school is a member. The work of the Association is carried on by live main committees, the chairmen of which, plus representatives from the seventh and eighth grades, are called the Council. These committees are: the Triangle, which publishes the school year-book, the Social Committee, which plans and gives the Prom and other social activities, the Welfare Committee, which directs the service programs in the school, and the teams f Belles and Whistles, , which arrange interscholastic competition for the school. This year, the officers of the Association are: president, Georgia Mc- Whorter, treasurer, Nancy Edwards, secretary, Anne Tatnall, editor of the Triangle, Joyce Miller, chairman of the Social Committee, Suzanne johnson, chairman of the Welfare Committee, Mary Elaine jones, chairman of the Athletic Council, Judy Eckles, captain of the Belles, Elizabeth Webster, captain of the Whistles, Ann Morris, representative from the eighth grade, Lisa Canby, representative from the seventh grade, Betsey Moore. Under the laws of a new constitution which went into effect at the be- ginning of the school year the Association has accomplished much during the monthly meetings. Under the enthusiastic direction of our president, Georgia McWhorter, we have planned a dance, a hayride, and a program for giving gifts to the Children's Bureau at Christmas. The school year has been full of successful activities directed by the Association, and we all hope that next year's leaders will be as good in helping us to plan and produce our projects as this year's Senior Class has been. Anne Tatnall Secretary SOCIAL ACTIVITIES This year, our social activities started off in a bang with a dance for St. Andrew's School. Regardless of many obstacles, such as running out of cider and having the juke box break down, the party was a great success. Plans for the year included some very informal blue jean parties just to get together and have fun. There were separate parties for the upper school, the sixth and seventh grades, and a special party for the third through the fifth grades who had one coming to them for a long time. This spring, there was a Strawberry Festival to raise money for the Prom, which, of course, is the ultimate aim of any social committee. The Prom this year promises to be a really terrific affair. It will be held on the ninth of june in the duBarry Room of the Hotel duPont. For our or- chestra this year, we have George Madden. Looking back over the social program of this year, it seems awfully full, but we have all had a wonderful time. It has really been fun being the Social Committee chairman this year. Suzanne johnson, Chairman Social Committee ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Athletic Association of 1952 and 1955 has had a busy and successful year. In October the Association sponsored a hayride for grades seven through twelve which was a great success. After the Alumnae Hockey Game we gave a luncheon. This spring the Association with the combined forces of Miss Mearns and Miss Brown turned out a new and very well liked spring sports program. The work done was made possible through the cooperation of the Athletic Association who were: seventh grade, Cintra Loftingg eighth grade, Alice Beasley, ninth grade, Elizabeth Bennethumg tenth grade, Joanne Weigel and eleventh grade, Cynthia Oswald. Judy Eckles, President Athletic- Association 1952-1953 THE MODERN DANCE GROUP OF TATNALL SCHOOL On September 10, 1952, Mrs. Forbes spoke to the uppper school girls con- cerning plans for the semester in the Modern Dance Group. Six seniors, one teacher and two underclassmen elected to take the course which met weekly for three hours. The plan for the year was to study choreography and produce a ballet in modern dance on the Christmas Story. The group elected Suzanne Johnson as its president. The work began with hundreds of pictures being studied by the girls. These were borrowed from the library, the Art Center, personal collections, and contributions from many interested friends of the group. The paintings were used thus: certain pictures were chosen and a small group would translate the paintings into a pattern or rhythmic movement. For example: a painting would show a group including the Virgin with the Christ Child, joseph and two shepherds. Five girls would duplicate the posture of them fin sixteen countsj, move in harmony with one another and in the mood of the picture. Countless exercises of this kind were performed for many weeks. Also, during these sessions, there were the usual limbering, stretching and hardening exer- cises of dance technique being learned. Mrs. Hans Duus, the pianist, and Mrs. Cabell Handy, the costume designer, attended each of these sessions, with Mrs. Duus supplying all musical ac- companiment. The Gospels, telling of the events surrounding the birth of jesus, were read carefully and discussed at length. Gradually the girls began to move in dance form within the framework of the story. Then all pictures were taken away, the music for the ballet was chosen, the colors of the costumes were decided upon, the roles were cast, an extra day of rehearsal was added and the dance was outlined. The real choreog- raphy began in earnest. For every movement used fifteen or more were designed, tried and dis- carded. The pageant was presented three times. The first performance was at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Mrs. William Marmion requested the per- formance to be given for the Woman's Auxiliary on December 9, 1952. The pageant was given the second time on December 17, at the New Century Club for the entire Tatnall School, Faculty, parents and friends. The Rev. William Marmion asked that The Nativity be given at St. Andrew's Church again on December 21, for the church schools of the city, and for parents and friends. The Modern Dance Group, its director and all those assisting, offered its work to God, with thanksgiving before each performance in prayer together. Margaret M. SPRING SPORTS FOR 1955 Now that we have moved into bigger quarters the words Out of Doors bring a happy smile on the girls' faces. With Spring here our sports have many variations. Dropping tennis for this year only, fwe hope, and starting badminton, softball, and a combination of volley ball and ring tennis, we hope to have lots of 'fun with intramural competition. This competition has taught us to play together as one big happy family. With the school year coming to an end I realize that my day to leave is very close. I am so glad that I have learned to know and love each one of you during my wonderful days at Tatnall. I shall always remember these years with the fondest memories. Good luck! Alice Mearns THE HOCKEY SEASON The '52 hockey season was an exciting one for everybody. The varsity won a game, the third through sixth grade team - the Midgets - played live games, and the junior varsity did very well. A new wave of spirit uplifted all the players. Spirit was built up by the hard working energy.of the five former varsity players plus the new blood added to the team. Midget games were attended by proud parents who gave the younger girls much fight to win enthusiasm. junior varsity members played well and with a great deal of zeal. The large attendance at all the games of the junior varsity and varsity gave the older girls' teams confidence. Having our own field this year and a new locker room made us very happy. This year's hockey field was the front lawn but a regulation field will be ready for next year. Another new feature, the locker rooms, have places for our clothes and six showers. Behind the new spirit present stood Ally Mearns and her assistant coach, Issy Brown. We thank them for everything they did for us and for making hockey full of fun. Good luck and victorious games to next year's team! The Correlated Arts Course of the Tatnall School For the second year, Mrs. Henry L. Forbes, jr., planned and directed a correlated arts program for the students of the Upper School in the Winter Term. As ih the first year, Mrs. Forbes enlisted the cooperation of interested teachers, parents, and other members of the community. The idea behind the course was to present a different approach to the study of an historical period from that offered in the regular school curriculum. The subject for the 1953 Correlated Arts Course of The Tatnall School was the American Colonial period. Early American history was chosen for study because of the great interest in this community in the opening of the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum. The ten-week course began on january 6, 1953 with a lecture on furniture by Mrs. Robert Lee Myers, jr., principal, and continued on alternate Tuesdays until March 3rd. On intervening Tuesdays workshops were held in the music and dancing period directed by Mrs. Frances Haut and Miss Alice Mearns. The lecturers included Miss Elizabeth Crook, professor of Musical Education at the University of Delaware, Mr. Clarence A. Fulmer, principal of the Wilmington High School, Mrs. George Rieger, chairman of the costume committee of the Wilmington Drama League, Mrs. Donald Fertman, lecturer on the society of the period, and Miss julia Andrews, instructor in art at the Delaware Art Center. A highlight of the course was the tour of the Winterthur Museum taken by the students in May. The half-day excursion included the inspection of the beautiful azalea gardens as well as twenty rooms of the Museum. A well-known member of the Wilmington Drama League, Mrs. Richard Durham, was asked to direct a play to be produced by the members of the course. The plan was to choose a drama of the period. After a great deal of research, Mrs. Durham decided to write a play which would be better suited to a girls' school. The Village Inn was written especially for the Tatnall School. It was based on the story of the Battle of the Brandywine in 1777. The action took place in the kitchen of an inn. The all-girl cast was augmented by an off-stage man's voice supplied by one of the fathers. The play was pre- sented on March 17, 1953 at the New Century Club. ujyf N ,,-49 ,a -. xg, ,. . ,4,- W 'i feb? . -M .J .5 , 'Y 53 ? wi K A my .. mf Em ,H Wg- ' 'Es ZQSSAZHKKZQE. THE GLEE CLUB The Glee Club, which includes all the pupils at Sedgely, was busy this y'ear learning new songs for Christmas, May Day, Commencement, and a few just for fun. Under the direction of Mrs. Frances Haut, we had Glee Club every Thursday afternoon. There were two groups: one, the third through the sixth grade, and the other, all the grades above that. We sang songs of many different types. For instance, Many a New Day , from the musical show, Oklahoma , was one of the ones we liked best. Franz Lehar's Vilia was well-liked. Nice in a quite different way was Gau- deamus Igitur , a Latin students' song. But perhaps our favorite was Alpine Morning , which is set to the music of the William Tell 0verture. We in this class were fortunate in having the excellent directing of Mrs. Haut to help us try to add to the beauty of our traditional events each year. THE ART CLASSES The nursery school through second grade worked at the Lower School , 2506 Delaware Avenue. This year, the art classes, under the direction of Miss Gertrude Balch, ac- complished much in their light and roomy new art workshop and everyone up to the eighth grade took part. Every Monday afternoon a class, consisting of anyone from grades eight through twelve who chose to take art, met for two hours. For the first time, we lid' the pleasure of being able to paint outside. We painted pictures of the gardens, the lovely old building, and all the other beautiful scenery at Sedgely. This year, we did several sketches and paintings of our school pets. Our two cats, Gus-Gus and Jinx, often posed for us. Then, we always had Nico- demus, a cocker spaniel belonging to Miss Balch. During the past year, we in the art classes have really had fun and learned much while painting, working in clay, cutting block prints, and making pro- jects, such as mobiles. Sarah Swift Beekley, a graduate of Tatnall School and Skidmore College, now teaching the Sixth Class, writes her impressions of her grandmother, Mrs. Henry Lea Tatnall: Grandma grew in the Victorian Howerpot of the 187O,s. In this, a straight- laced, stockinged, and priggish era, she formed and grew. Time changed slowly with the turning of a century and Grandma grew slowly with its turn- ings and changings. In these first beginnings of our frantic wildness she raised nine of her ten children, mostly girls, without the blessings of the Bendix and aureomycin - but brought them to flower in this age quite a garden removed from the original Howerpot, adding gradually the sons-in-law and daughters- in-law who continue the chain. She added, in 1930, the rudiments of another growing bevy of llowerettes, a family always growing till at'last count the descendancy reads like the Book of Genesis. Descendants numbering sixty-seven including daughters seven and daughters' husbands seven, sons two and sons' wives, two, and daughters' daughters and sons' sons' sons. Yea, verily, this is an accomplishment, nor the least of this being daughters and daughters of the Tatnall School. With roots in good Queen Victorian, and the luck of a woman welding a career from fifty north--this is an accomplishment. The why and the ability are the person. Grandma has grown with the new growths, never static behind the disappearing walls of past times. Grandma has been able always to give the next person credit for being human, thus able to grow with changes on the only possible footing- the equal one. The lady, then, the lady of Victoria, grows with us and is still the lady but very much of this day. Nothing of archaic priggishness clinging still, be- cause this isxa lady of real and exquisite and delicate sense of humour. Sense of humour is a reciprocating pleasure which gives and takes. Flexibility - sense of humour - here is the obvious and deeper blending, Grandma's very real enjoyment of things and of people, the spirit which started her mid-fifty career- We were trying an experiment and having the time of our lives . This is the quality which cannot help but shed on the people who come in contact with it, this the measure of Grandma's sympathy toward and with the human factor - the extent to which she enjoys and is enjoyed, this the Tatnall family cohesive, and the Tatnall School essence, simple, human and good. And shared much by little ones-the soft warm voice which has con- vinced grandchild and great-grandchild of the greatness of Ulysses, and the curious wonder of a story about cherrystones. To have preserved these qualities from circumscribed beginning to broad and full old age-this is the real and rarely found lady. E I E 3 MRS. THE ANNUAL PRIZES Each year at Commencement, great interest has centered around the different prizes awarded, those given for English Composition, and the Triangle Pin. This latter award goes to the member of the Senior Class who, in the judgment of the Faculty, best represents the standards and ideals of the School. It includes scholarship, but scholar- ship is not the only, or even the chief, basis of the award, for it comprehends also those less tangible qualities of character that make for the happiness of the whole social group - integrity, sincerity, consideration for others, un- selfishness, cooperation, courtesy, imaginativeness that makes one quick to see another's point of view and to treat it sympathetically. The Triangle Pin, therefore, has always been the School's highest mark of honour. Another valued prize, The Wooden Spoon, is awarded annually for the same general qualities, by vote of the students of the Upper School, to a member of the junior or Senior Class. Two cups and a plaque, the Senior Honour Cup, the junior Honour Cup, and the Intermediate School Plaque, are also awarded annually by the Faculty. These are awarded, not to an individual, but to the class most nearly real- izing the standards of the School in trustworthiness, friendliness, courtesy, cooperation, and school-spirit. These cups and the plaque are held by the winning classes for a year, when they will be again awarded. Also each year a French prize is given to the pupil in the Upper School who has made the greatest improve- ment in the language, and has evinced real interest and industry throughout the year. At the beginning of this school year, announcement was made of a new prize to be awarded on Commence- ment Day by the Principal of the School, to a student who most nearly approached in her speaking voice those qualities mentioned by William Shakespeare in King Lear CAct V, Scene iiij: Her voice was ever soft, gentle, and low, an excellent thing in woman . This year also for the first time a new prize in athletics is awarded. The trophy, presented to the School by Miss Meams, is awarded to a student in the high school grades for outstanding achievement in hockey. AWRIJS The Triangle Pin ..........
