Fil Simpson fights for first-down yardage against Bryan Station's Green Machine. Friends and foe alike converge while Simpson attempts to hang on to the ball. 1969 was essentially a rebuilding one for TC football, as 27 lettermen were lost through gradua- tion. Inexperience, a weak offense, and misfortune were blamed for the team's woes. The Commodores did not score until their fourth game. This followed losses to Garrad County, Cumberland, and Anderson County. Changes were made in the offense. Ben Bransom was moved from center to fullback and Cam Graves shifted to left halfback from quarter- back. Sophomore Bill Silliman came to the quarter- back position from fullback. These changes defi- nitely improved the Commodores' offensive punch. Following the defeat by the Lafayette Generals, the Commodores rolled to three straight wins including the 20-7 defeat of city rival Henry Clay. Then misforttuie hit the Commodores as senior Bruce Malony was injured as the team lost to Danville. This dimmed TC's chances against Bryan Station and despite a game battle by the Commodores, the Defenders prevailed 28-12. This loss left the team a 3-6 mark on the year.
