Nutcracker Ballet proves successful again The Nutcracker was performed for the second year in a row, Tascosa was still the only high school to ever attempt the production. Several added attrac- tions brightened up the five evenings of the ballet. Among them were Santa Claus Lane with old Saint Nick and his helpers. Les Chanteurs entertained in the commons before the performance and during the intermission, while Les Chansons caroled on the front lawn of the school. Candy was passed out to little children by Santa's helpers after each performance. Charles Maples, guest star from Los Angeles, danced the lead in the first four performances and Rene Clemente took the lead on the last perform- ance. Maples is a member of a ballet company that puts on The Nutcracker 25 times each year. Cle- mente is a student at West Texas State University. Richard Kidwell, Amarillo Public Schools coordina- tor of music, directed the 60-member orchestra. Extra touches were added to last year's scenery for a different effect. Danny Gamble, an art teacher, along with art and drama students, did most of the art work. Ruth Biftel also worked on the scenery and has worked on it before for the drama department. A garage and bake sale helped to raise money for the production cost. Last year's cost was S2,000. This year's cost was about the same with orchestra music alone costing 3200. All performances were attended by capacity crowds. Winston Odom's first period journalism class was involved with ballet publicity which included posters, a slide show, handbills and radio coverage. An elf aids Santa with the anxiously waiting children. Santa's helpers also gave candy to the kids after each performance. STUDENT LIFE 29

Uniclrive edges past goal by nearly S5300 Christmas came early for Tascosa as the Unidrive began in October. The drive, for Girlstown and the American Field Service, was a complete success. The S2400 goal was passed by a total of SB267196. The Junior Class raised 3982.29 and the sophomores placed second with 3802.89 Seniors trailed with a little over 5370. The junior homeroom that raised the most money received the honor of having the next foreign student in its homeroom. Eugene Coleman's class donated a total of 8173.19 Two pay assemblies helped to raise money in the drive. A Powder Puff football game which usually aided the drive was cancelled by bad weather. To replace it, the varsity football team played the coach- ing staff in a volleyball game. The tickets were 25 cents each and a total of 5173.34 was raised. The best two out of three games were played, resulting with the football team as the champions. Another pay assembly, presented by several sen- iors, brought in 322625. Seniors who presented the program were Fred Ayad, George Belcheff, Blair Camp, Charles Curl, Steve Dunnagan, Rick Faucett, Joe Kirscht, Jim Wilson and Robert Workman. The Junior Class, who donated the most to the drive, along with the top three homerooms of the other classes attended a special Christmas program. The program was presented by the kindergarten of Margaret Wills Elementary, who sang several songs that were acted out by a number of characters. 30 STUDENT LIFE Students look on as the varsity football players battle it out with the coaches in a volleyball game to promote Unidrive.
