Nixon tops lVlcGove rn fr mst.. S' UPI Photo The President and Mrs. Nixon place a wreath at the side of the casket of Harry S. Truman and say a prayer in his remembrance. to win a second term President Richard Nixon swept the country in November to win a second term in office over Demo- cratic candidate George McGovern. As was predicted before by polls, Nixon carried the majority of the states with the exceptions of Massachusetts and Washington, D. C. As we meet here today, we stand on the threshold of a new era of peace in the world. So started Nix- on's inaugural address on Jan. 20 when he began his second term in office. Several demonstrators were on hand to protest the war in Viet Nam, but all were peaceful. Harry S. Truman, former President, died after a long illness at Kansas City Research Hospital and Medical Clinic at the age of 88. President Nixon declared a 30-day mourning period in the nation. Several things came to pass under Truman's administration. lt was President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. The Truman Doc- trine supported Greece and Turkey against Commu- nist threats. He also ordered U.S. troops into South Korea when it was invaded by the Communists. Presi- dent Nixon described him as one of the most coura- geous presidents in our history. Nutcracker Ballet proves successful again The Nutcracker was performed for the second year in a row, Tascosa was still the only high school to ever attempt the production. Several added attrac- tions brightened up the five evenings of the ballet. Among them were Santa Claus Lane with old Saint Nick and his helpers. Les Chanteurs entertained in the commons before the performance and during the intermission, while Les Chansons caroled on the front lawn of the school. Candy was passed out to little children by Santa's helpers after each performance. Charles Maples, guest star from Los Angeles, danced the lead in the first four performances and Rene Clemente took the lead on the last perform- ance. Maples is a member of a ballet company that puts on The Nutcracker 25 times each year. Cle- mente is a student at West Texas State University. Richard Kidwell, Amarillo Public Schools coordina- tor of music, directed the 60-member orchestra. Extra touches were added to last year's scenery for a different effect. Danny Gamble, an art teacher, along with art and drama students, did most of the art work. Ruth Biftel also worked on the scenery and has worked on it before for the drama department. A garage and bake sale helped to raise money for the production cost. Last year's cost was S2,000. This year's cost was about the same with orchestra music alone costing 3200. All performances were attended by capacity crowds. Winston Odom's first period journalism class was involved with ballet publicity which included posters, a slide show, handbills and radio coverage. An elf aids Santa with the anxiously waiting children. Santa's helpers also gave candy to the kids after each performance. STUDENT LIFE 29
