Truman and say a prayer in his remembrance. to win a second term President Richard Nixon swept the country in November to win a second term in office over Demo- cratic candidate George McGovern. As was predicted before by polls, Nixon carried the majority of the states with the exceptions of Massachusetts and Washington, D. C. As we meet here today, we stand on the threshold of a new era of peace in the world. So started Nix- on's inaugural address on Jan. 20 when he began his second term in office. Several demonstrators were on hand to protest the war in Viet Nam, but all were peaceful. Harry S. Truman, former President, died after a long illness at Kansas City Research Hospital and Medical Clinic at the age of 88. President Nixon declared a 30-day mourning period in the nation. Several things came to pass under Truman's administration. lt was President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. The Truman Doc- trine supported Greece and Turkey against Commu- nist threats. He also ordered U.S. troops into South Korea when it was invaded by the Communists. Presi- dent Nixon described him as one of the most coura- geous presidents in our history.
