The Annual Staff has chosen this as their theme for 1984-85 with expectations of a banner year. With the year's being marked with victories and disappointments, we find just how important Going for the Gold is. We realize that the striving and giving our best efforts to capture the gold are really much more important than the accomplishment. Many of those who cast their eyes on this annual and this writing, including this writer, will not return to Tarrant High School for another year. If you carry nothing else with you. upon your graduation, carry this thought. GO FOR THE GOLD ! 3 Wr. Doncat This year’s Mr. TopCat is not only talented in Football, but in academic subjects as well. He is very courteous to his teachers and classmates. He is involved in many sports such as Football, Baseball and outside of school he spends alot of time hunting and playing golf. After graduation he plans to attend the University of Auburn and major in Engineering. Tarrant High School is proud to introduce our 1985 Mr. TopCat, Rusty Campbell. Dr. Richards has been principal for the last seven years. He was football coach at Tarrant High School for ten years from 1956-66, during which time he coached one team to County Championship and one to State Championship. He was also named Jefferson County Coach of the Year in 1965. During the past year there has been a new joy added to his life, a granddaughter named Stacey. Ask him anytime and he will tell you about her. With great appreciation, the Wildcat staff acknowledges the hard work and understanding Dr. Richards has given to the students of Tarrant High School. Rare is the chance tor high school students to fulfill an impossible dream. Rare for a group to compete against all odds and come out a winner. Winning, however, was not the only lesson learned at the National VICA Conference held in Louisville, Kentucky. June 26-29, 1984. Tarrant VICA Sponsor, Kent Feenker and 21 students consisting of two teams: Club Business Procedure and Open-ing Closing Ceremony, competed at National level. Achieving first place status and a proud medal was an unexpected victory for the eight THS students on the VICA Club Business Procedure team. The team members are: Neil Martin, Chairman: Valerie Merrell, Secretary: Jimmy Kirkland: Daron Stan-Cll; Melinda Powell; Layne Glover and Amy Brown. Anji Pitts competed at District and State competitions but was unable to attend National's. The coaching team for the victory was David Kirkland and Don Stevens, a VICA Advisor from Wetumpka High School. The National Conference will change sites from Louisville, Kentucky to Phoenix, Arizona. It was rare to have the chance to compete, but it will be even rarer to bring home the gold again in 1985. Todd Day claimed the position as National VICA Treasurer during the conference. He will represent the 300,000 member state VICA organization in the upcoming year. In October, 1984, Todd spent 2 weeks in Washington, D.C., at VICA’s National Headquarters in Leesburg, Virginia to train for his position. Pictured Above: Jimmy Kirkland. Daron Stancil, Valerie Merrell, Amy Brown, Neil Martin, Christi Stallings, Melinda Powell, and Layne Glover. During National VICA week, February 5-10, 1984, THS VICA Club and other participating students discovered the meaning of Disabled but not Handicapped. Obstacles facing the handicapped was the topic for THS VICA Club’s salute to National VICA week. A special assembly was held to end the week long tribute of being truly Handi-Capable Not Handicapped. 82 DRAMA PRODUCTION Wildcat Jones and the Idol of Victory was written and produced by the Drama Class, and directed by Rod Robin-Dn. The cast, along with the Drama class, included a group of break dancers. Our thanks and appreciation goes to Irs. Coffman and all the students who helped make Homecoming 1984 a big success.
