lnitiates Pledge Ideals of Scholarship Vanette Medlen lights the candle for Marilyn Scherer during Phi Theta Kappa installation. Phi Theta Kappa pledges received ribbons and in- formcition at a coke party for the Rho Chi chapter of the national honor society for iunior college students. In November, new members promised to maintain the ideals of scholarship in a candlelight initiation. Each pledge received a blue ribbon and a pin symbolizing vvisdom, aspiration, and purity, Dr. Milton Smith, Dean of Instruction, was guest speaker. Members of Phi Theta Kappa were able to take part in the Honors Study Program during the year, The program had as its purpose the discovery of ideals that formed the basis for accomplishment during the first six decades of the nineteenth century. Goals for this particu- lar study were the additions to one's own intellectual, aesthetic, and cultural background. Membership in the group was limited to those who had achieved a grade point average of 3.5 after one full semester. Freshmen had to maintain an average of not less than 3.3 while Sophomores had to keep a 3,0. lf these averages vvere not maintained the student was dropped from the roster. TSEA Travels with Ease f Beverly lhnfeldt c ,V fr' sc 9 ,nr Betty Miller .O A Ron Randall Veteran convention delegates, Texas Student Edu- cation Association members, hosted a state meeting and attended district, regional, and national con- ferences. Last summer, three delegates - Beverly lhnfeldt, Betty Miller, and Mrs, Virginia Gee - represented the school at the Twelfth Annual Council of State Presidents at the National SEA Convention in Houston. Christmas holidays were spent making posters and signs for the state convention held in Fort Worth, ln March, they attended a workshop at Hotel Texas where they discussed improving iunior college chapters, lowering the voting age, ancl changing counselor images, Two weeks later a delegation participated in a regional National Education Association Conference in Oklahoma City, Members spread Christmas cheer to a family of nine children by showering the children with food and clothing. Other club projects included a candy sale, a Christmas party, and ci Miss Easter Bunny contest. Win- ner ofthe contest was Sydney Michael, APO sweetheart. At their spring bcinauet at Vance Godbys, Esther Berkley received the Outstanding Member Plague and Betty Miller the SIOO Virginia Gee Scholarship, I Z' V5 ST , . as If X . f-. 4 I .
