Taurus Wins Basketball Honors if xws-wx -we s L Taurus sweetheart Kathy Klint. if G4 J s -f'l , X it Xi' A Taurus, another new organization, combined service and pleasure in an action-packed round of activities. The fraternity established themselves as kings of the court by defeating KXOL Bumbling Basketeers, APO, and a Dallas Baptist College fraternity. ln February they scored a one-point victory over the KXOL team. Highlight of the game was Tim Davies' charge to the opposition's basket. They defeated APO with once again a one-point victory. During the gran dopening of the Tarrant County Convention Center in November, six members served as ushers at various events: Ben Adkins, John Farley, John Merrett, Roy Prater, Ron Turpin, and Victor Walker. On a more serious note Taurus pledges participated in the Big Brother Program for boys ages 7-17, Projected activities for next year will be a special outing once a month in which Taurus members will take a fatherless boy for a day's activities to help provide needed mas- culine companionship and identity. A fishing trip to Lake Whitney climaxed their spring social activities, The catch was small but the fun, loig. Officers were Roy Prater, president, Myron Smith, vice-president, Larry Guirsier, treasurer, John Farley, mastereat-arms. lnitiates Pledge Ideals of Scholarship Vanette Medlen lights the candle for Marilyn Scherer during Phi Theta Kappa installation. Phi Theta Kappa pledges received ribbons and in- formcition at a coke party for the Rho Chi chapter of the national honor society for iunior college students. In November, new members promised to maintain the ideals of scholarship in a candlelight initiation. Each pledge received a blue ribbon and a pin symbolizing vvisdom, aspiration, and purity, Dr. Milton Smith, Dean of Instruction, was guest speaker. Members of Phi Theta Kappa were able to take part in the Honors Study Program during the year, The program had as its purpose the discovery of ideals that formed the basis for accomplishment during the first six decades of the nineteenth century. Goals for this particu- lar study were the additions to one's own intellectual, aesthetic, and cultural background. Membership in the group was limited to those who had achieved a grade point average of 3.5 after one full semester. Freshmen had to maintain an average of not less than 3.3 while Sophomores had to keep a 3,0. lf these averages vvere not maintained the student was dropped from the roster.
