During National Secretaries Week in April a seminar was helcl on cantpus while a certified public secretary spoke to classes. Students interested in legal secretary Work partici- pated in ci mock trial at the County Court l-louse, where they went through procedures of covering court reporting The general Office Occupations prograrn of study is for sturlents desiring training in general office Work in which shorthand or in-depth study of accounting is not a requirement, Training is offered in several areas for which iob entrance may be available, The Office Occupations Building contains class- roonws for courses in shorthand, typing, accounting, bool-lfeeping, economics, business machine, secretarial and office practice, and laboratory eau'pment. ', 3 . , R e Creati itq TCU's poet-in-residence, Dr. William Skelly Burford, told students the essence of creativity is in bringing one's self to some form of expression Speaking under the auspices of the English Department, Dr. Burford initiated the Creative Writing Contest which was climaxed by the Awards Banquet in May, French classes explored De Gaulles country this semester via several slides and dialogue series pre- pared by Mrs, Martha l-lolmes and Mrs. Jane Harper, French instructors Dialogue portions of the series were mastered in verbal drills during class. Taped dialogues were also used weekly in the foreign language lab- oratory along with other learning devices. Students in advanced reading classes often read ten novels ci semester. The exercise aided in the develop- ment of speed skills. Though speed reading is included in the two reading courses offered, main emphasis is placed on comprehension skills, vocabulary development, X f and critical reading. ft ls During newspaper and yearbook lab periods and in their spare time, iournalism stuclents produced the 'Mani Reflector, newspaper, Carillon, yearbook, and veg' A - Summa, ma azine.
