KARATE CLUB lTop rowl Brenton Drakeford, Steve Carter, Tom Dills, Gilbert Garcia, Ken Bradford. lSecond rowl James Butin, Sammy Par-tida, Paul McCullough, Pete Avduana, They spent little time on parliamentary procedure, but they've earned a national reputation. They appeared barefooted in public wearing wrinkled kimonos, but no one laughed. They were Karate Club members, and their collection of trophies was the most spectacular in school. James Butin took first place in black belt division over lo entrants in the Southern US Karate Champion- ship held at University of Mississippi in April. Also entered were Gary l-lestilow and Ken Bradford. Butin, Bradford, and Hestilow competed in the Seventh Annual US Karate Championship Tournament, ln addition to winning championships, the, Karate Club held classes in beginning and advanced karate as well as womens self-defense. Butin demonstrated the power of karate at a smash- in to initiate club sweetheart, Helen Carbaial, Members ended the year by participating in the Fort Worth Karate Belt Contest in Forest Park. lncluded in the panel of iudges were Jhoon Rhee, highest ranking black belt in the US, and James Butin, club president. Other officers were Gary Hestilow, vice-president, Ken Bradford, secretary and ICC representative, and Tom Dills, teasurer. Larry Wilcoxen is the sponsor for the club. 'ssssril .. ri, 1 :kj Evelyn Sfanfield and Mayola Lasater, sophomore nursing students, prepare for actual operating room experience. e Convention Members of the Nursing Students Association are making plans now for the state convention they will host next year. Julie Weiler, freshman, was elected di- rector ofthe state organization. A delegation of freshmen and sophomores attended the state meeting of TNSA in Houston, When the largest club in school conducted bake sales last fall, one member was excused from kitchen chores. James Austin, the only male on the 93-member roster of NSA, attended all monthly socials, lectures, and films planned to introduce members to each other and to their profession. Crisp pin-striped uniforms were discarded for the Christmas party since no one was admitted without a costume and a gift of food. The food was later arranged in gift boxes and presented to needy families. The Fort Worth Opti-Mrs. contributed S540 to freshmen nurses for uniforms and supplies, Nine nurses were chosen by the Financial Aids Committee on the basis of academic achievement to receive S60 each.
