Karate Earns National Honors 1Is.,.4.i,! ,X V l Xl! Q ,rig f E cl Karate enthusiasts exhibit their skill during activity period. KARATE CLUB lTop rowl Brenton Drakeford, Steve Carter, Tom Dills, Gilbert Garcia, Ken Bradford. lSecond rowl James Butin, Sammy Par-tida, Paul McCullough, Pete Avduana, They spent little time on parliamentary procedure, but they've earned a national reputation. They appeared barefooted in public wearing wrinkled kimonos, but no one laughed. They were Karate Club members, and their collection of trophies was the most spectacular in school. James Butin took first place in black belt division over lo entrants in the Southern US Karate Champion- ship held at University of Mississippi in April. Also entered were Gary l-lestilow and Ken Bradford. Butin, Bradford, and Hestilow competed in the Seventh Annual US Karate Championship Tournament, ln addition to winning championships, the, Karate Club held classes in beginning and advanced karate as well as womens self-defense. Butin demonstrated the power of karate at a smash- in to initiate club sweetheart, Helen Carbaial, Members ended the year by participating in the Fort Worth Karate Belt Contest in Forest Park. lncluded in the panel of iudges were Jhoon Rhee, highest ranking black belt in the US, and James Butin, club president. Other officers were Gary Hestilow, vice-president, Ken Bradford, secretary and ICC representative, and Tom Dills, teasurer. Larry Wilcoxen is the sponsor for the club. Pulitzer Prize winner, Dr. John Carroll, movie and television consultant, spoke in March on Why Movies Aren't What They Used To Be, Bill Hendricks, Star- Telegram reporter, related some experiences in Vietnam, History instructor, Relay Cary, spoke on the historical role ot the Negro in the US. Cciry hcis developed ci series ot transparencies on American history that treat the roles of all racial groups equally. German native Hans Kurkowski, German instructor, spoke about Hitler and living under dictatorship, A maior activity was a visit to the Convention Cen' ter to take part in a nationwide closed circuit ciuestione and answer session with the Presidential Cabinet A scholarship vvcis offered to history students as a club proiect to spark interest in teaching.
