Jon Tackle Jack Back Bob Back Dick Back Jack End Tarkio held high hopes of beginning a new series rivalry with Sterling by gain- ing a victory over the Warriors. Sterling, however, had other ideas, and the Owls went down to defeat l3-27. At home again the Tarks were beaten by a powerful William Jewell outfit. Ex- cept for two or three long breakaway runs early in the game, the Owls were able to hold the Cards in check. Tarkio's homecoming was made suc- cessful by a thrilling l9-l3 victory over Graceland College. Graceland made a late effort to pull the game out of the fire, but the Owls held on to win. Meanwhile the Owlmen had lost to rugged Carthage College, and an old arch- rival, Culver Stockton. As the season drew to a close, Tarkio ran into the pow- erful Missouri Valley grid machine. Al- though the Owls never stopped battling, they were crushed 46-O. Tarkio closed out the i958 campaign with a l3-0 shutout of St. Marys College of Kansas. Dennis co-captain Larry co-captain Nub Guard Bill Back Allen Tackle SEASON THUMBNAIL SKETCH The Tarkio gridiron season would have appeared to be only so-so to most observ- ers. However the team and coaches felt that they had done a great deal toward building a real tough outfit for the next campaign. The Owls played one of their stittest schedules in years, and lacked only one win of finishing with an even .500 mark. The team started out in fine style by taking Dana to the cleaners to the tune of T9-6. The Owls were out to get this one because Dana had beaten the flu-ridden Owl team last year. Bob Patton engine- ered a touchdown on the opening series. as the Owls marched down the field on the ground and then scored on a pass to Bob fFrankl Dougherty. Tarkio next gained an impressive 37-0 victory over outmanned Central college. We were ranked near the top of the nation in rushing defense as a result otholding them to -57 yards rushing.
