THE TARKIANA, 1938 sCRiBiBLERs . J .il- THE MUSICAL STAIRS. We sailed in the land of the musical stairs Where the little lost songs are gone, And blown by the winds of a melody sweet,- We found there the queerest throng. For, winding and swirling and running away, - Each stair-step an ivory key, And skipping upon them with silvery toes Were the little lost songs of glee. And they pranced and they danced on the musica All in black and in white arrayed, They flatted and sharped in harmonies, And a tinkling tune they played. But we came upon them and frightened them so They trembled, and tumbled the tune- And slipping away where we could not go, They left but a ghost of the runei A THE RESTLESS SEA Dashing spray on high The waves splash against the rocky shore, Restless- l stairs, Ever coming higher-going lower- Always sighing, weeping, moaning Churning, slashing, twisting, groaning- Tossing ships as chips . It' rises and dips I ' And fills all earth with its incessant roar. . R. B. TANT RUM Rain beats a tattoo on my window Vague thoughts gnaw at my mind, My book is dull My heart rebels Because I'm in a rut. Rain gleefully 'patters on the roof Rebellion grows and grows I pace the floor. I kick the rugs I feel like throwing things. Rain drips and drips from off the eaves. My -brain doth crave expression I seize my pen, I tear up paper, I've had another tantrum. E. R. B. page eighty-eight , F lt'S He Prellld' Pvwfo ina C.
