THE TARKIANA, 1938 fYear's Best News Story . . . Selected by Torch Staff! T. C. Men Answerlorch War Poll ...ii . Majority of Men Will Fight Only to,Defend American Soil 9412, WILL FIGHT il.. ' The results of the student poll, conducted some time ago among the men of the college' on the question of their attitude toward war, show that 94 per cent of the men of the college would go to war for Uncle Sam. It also showed that two-thirds' of this number would not care to fight if the war was to be fought on foreign soil. Of the 86 that answered the poll, 55 checked the second state- ment, I will fight only if continen- tal United States is invaded by Japan. 30 percent or 26 of the men check- ed the first statement, I will fight if the United States declares war on Japan. 0 Only 6 per cent, or 5 men checked the statement, I will not fight under any circumstances. I A survey of the poll, and the com- ments that several offered, would seem to show that if Tarkio repre- sents the average of American youth, the United States need not fear that she will lack defenders. It also seems page eighty-four to show that Youth is thinking about warfare, and its costs. There is little in the poll to indicate the old idea of, My country-right or wrong! Youth wants to have its say before it enters another war. ,One man sum- med up the opinion of the rest, It seems to me that if the United States is invaded every man ought to defend his own country, but only after every possible diplomatic effort to effect a settlement has completely failed. Others were more fatalistic. For example: A poll of this type is fool- ish, as certainly we will all fight if war is declared. The draft will take care of that. . The opinion that one should not fight under any condition was held by five students. Four of this five so qualified their statements as to virtually say they would fight in case of invasion. One answered, I will get married and have a large family in order to keep out of fighting. The twenty-six that answered that they would fight under any condi- tions for the most, part made no comment. One did say, Refusal to fight if war is declared is cowardice and treason. We cannot solve the question by refusing to fight, re- move the cause of war by Christian Education. UZ' llifchell get lf 'nf 0 iw P? . ,U Q' Har me in The B055 at iv WOW' une' r' . THE TARKIANA, 1938 TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF A LIBRARIAN It doesn't take a great deal of intelligence to be a librarian, but one has to have nerves that can take it. For instance, in the winter some people cannot understand why they are not allowed to open the windows. Your made-to-order explanation, 'fIt disrupts the heating system is met with the old query Why? i The only answer you know is that it just does, which is no answer at all. Some people think it is a crime that they can't have reserve books before 8:45 in the evening. Others don't even bother to do such a ridiculous thing as check books before they take them out of the library. When someone is told that six books are the limit, they just can't understand why anyone would be so stingy and can't even remember such a rule. Even Have you read your handbook? doesn't convince them. ' ' I could name several other pet gripes and even some special problem children but I'll just sum them up with noise, confusion, misplacement of books, et cetera, ad infinitum. QYou'll find the meanings of those over there in the big Webster's dictionary,J Library work is so educational. You'd be surprised at how many new words you learn working cross-word puzzles. The people I hold highest in affection are those who arrive two minutes before closing time to get a ten minutesresume of the news. I also like those- who meet you in the hall on your way out and tell you there are two books they simply must have, What kind of work are you doing next year? Well, I'd advise you to be a library assistant. The work is just too, too, interesting. Excuse me a moment. Somebody wants to check out a book. I wonder what they think I'm here for, anyhow. - F. P.
