FIRST ROW-Mr. Kyle, Peters, McPherson, Padget, Lewis, Waits, Mitchell, Nuckols. BASKETBALL-1938 . Led by Lee Padget, the handsome Junior captain, Tarkio treaded its ,Way through a good season on the hardwood courts and finished third in the M. C. A. U. The Owls took care of eight of their opponents, being defeated sevenltimes, but never by a wide margin except to the All-American Phillip's team who played the boys in an early season assignment. g Waits led the Tarks' scoring by tallying 56 field goals and 25 free tosses for a total of 137 points, over one-fourth of the team's total of 464 points. Lewis finished second in the scoring with a total of 104 points, While our captain-elect Peters was third with 69 points. With such a fine season completed, the student body looks forward to still better things from the basketball squad next year. From the team of the '37-'38 season, MI'- Kyle looses only Gene Branson, a senior, who will be long-remembered for his fight- ing' Spirit and wholehearted co-operation. Those who won letters t'his year will be available Y19Xt Year. FIRST ROW--Mr. Kyle, Mitchell, Cotner, Brown, MacFarland, Bennett, Grebe, Adam. TRACK-1937 Track in the 1937 season began with the old urge, Repeat performance of the year before. Win the M. C. A. U. We give no alibis, but it was close anyway. Due to a late injury to the star of the squad, Lee Padget, the plucky team went 'through the state meet, tied at the. stage of the relays, to win a well-deserved second plafie, and carried home the thought, Watch out next year. 1 As it was, the team showed marked stuff as one of the best in the history of the school, breaking several records, winning fourth in the Hastings Relays, losing to Jewell by two points, winning two duels, one from Peru and one from Nebraska Wesleyan, and then winding up the season with second place in the state meet. Padget featured the individual scoring, getting six firsts in the Wesleyan meet and breaking four college records. Cotner accounted fora new record in the high hurdles and a conference record broad jump, while Captain MacFarland accounted for a new school record in the pole vault. ' Other stellar performers and lettermen of the season included Mitchell, Stevenson, Brown, and Bennett in the longer races, Porter in the weights, Ryan and Adams, quartermilers, Grebe in the half, Waits and Saurbaugh in the relays, McKinley in the broad jump, and Mertz, a javelin man.
