FOOTBALL-1937 Winning four games, losing two, and tying two brought many a happy moment to Tarkio fans and a share in the conference title for the Owls. Under the competent leadership of Mr. Kyle, coaching his tenth squad, forty boys came out and worked hard. After losing their opener to Warrensburg, 9 to 0, they went undefeated until the last game of the season, when they lost a non-conference tilt with Peru, 12 to 6, played before a very large Thanksgiving clay crowd harbored from the cold in their cars. Some highlights of the season included the consistent performances of Captain Mertz Fay, Ryan, Everly, Armstrong, and Schoonover all of whom made the first and second all-conference teams None of us will forget how Mertz played in the Central game after his shoulder injury in the Jewell game But talking of h1ghl1gh15S, do not forget how the boys broke loose in the Missouri Valley game Remember V Jewell went to the trouble of claiming an undisputed conference championship Then came the action of our student body to lay claim to half of the title Jewell was lucky this year, but another year may mean a different story e squad loses Captain Mertz, Fay Adam, Marti, and Woolsey Despite the los hese valuabl e men we are looking forward to another championship team T1 page sixty two 53.958-ri., Sami? aria a 'I H aW,,g'Z Si.i nw 1 ,dawg by P' grew 1 In, wsfw' .. 0,45 sae' 130 is b defdfi' .fire lv . 1938 THE TARKIANA COACHES ndel' fha Els Belly r leaders Pponenls tic fbfee l 0 to ou K-Ylel Kyle! He's our man. If he can't do it, Glover can. Newt Kyle is our man. He is one good coach, serving his eleventh year as Owl mentor. This year, he showed that he could do it by his co-champion football team and by a top-notch basketball team. Backing everyone of his boys with good sound advice and training, he has as great expectations for each individual as the in- dividual has for himself. Glover! Glover! He's our man. If he can't do it, Nuckol's can. This statement is no more true than the same concerning Coach Kyle, but it just shows how versatile our coaching staff is. This former Shenandoah mentor is an excellent line coach. In the three years he has been here, Tarkio's lines have been as solid as any small college could Wish for. Nuckols! Nuckols! He's our man. If he can't do it, nobody can. Crook has the spirit, and if our boys don't catch the germ, it isn't Nuckol'-s fault. Nuckols should be commended for his work with the intra-murals as well as for his work with the varsity. He is the last of our coach- ing council, and, by the way, he has 3' Councll of his own, now. page sixty-one 'w:M:-ref'-ui:D1i.ff':- - '-1---.Lq'f..,.- .:L,.

I. A. A. conference in line play only to be defeated by Paeses, and a late field goal. The defensive play of the game indicated a stone wall of a forward line. In a migration day game, played at Red Ooak, the Tarkio Owls squared accounts for the defeat of the year before by defeating the Red-men 13 to 0. Features of the game were the deadly blocking of Captain Mertz, the 1-un- ning of Schoonover, and the effective line play of Arm- strong, and Everly. Playing before a Chillicothe homecoming crowd of 8000, the Owls won again 6 to 0. Schoonover drove over from the one foot line after a sustained drive made possible by an intercepted pass by Thompson. The Owls scored early, and in the second stanza came near to a second marker, but a missed placement gave the ball to the Ducks. Fay, who was injured early in the game, was not available to the team for some time. A rival of forty years, Jewell offered too strong a de- fensive game for the Owls before a large homecoming crowd. The teams lacked offensive power, and the game ended in a scoreless tie. Both teams were in position to score, but neither had that final spark. Schoonover was all over the field. Remember that 40 yard sprint of Porter's after an intercepted pass? In the Central game Tarkio, time and time again, marched forty or sixty yards up-field but went over for only one touchdown. Three more points, were picked up by a placement kick by Armstrong in the first period, Schoon- over sparkpluged the Owls as usual, with Armstrong play- lng' a very substantial game. By this victory, Tarkio took a temporary lead in conference rating. Headed by Schoonover and Hummell, running wild around end and passing for five markers, the Owls produced 0116 Of. the best performances seen on the home f1eld for some time.
