1938 THE TARKIANA COACHES ndel' fha Els Belly r leaders Pponenls tic fbfee l 0 to ou K-Ylel Kyle! He's our man. If he can't do it, Glover can. Newt Kyle is our man. He is one good coach, serving his eleventh year as Owl mentor. This year, he showed that he could do it by his co-champion football team and by a top-notch basketball team. Backing everyone of his boys with good sound advice and training, he has as great expectations for each individual as the in- dividual has for himself. Glover! Glover! He's our man. If he can't do it, Nuckol's can. This statement is no more true than the same concerning Coach Kyle, but it just shows how versatile our coaching staff is. This former Shenandoah mentor is an excellent line coach. In the three years he has been here, Tarkio's lines have been as solid as any small college could Wish for. Nuckols! Nuckols! He's our man. If he can't do it, nobody can. Crook has the spirit, and if our boys don't catch the germ, it isn't Nuckol'-s fault. Nuckols should be commended for his work with the intra-murals as well as for his work with the varsity. He is the last of our coach- ing council, and, by the way, he has 3' Councll of his own, now. page sixty-one 'w:M:-ref'-ui:D1i.ff':- - '-1---.Lq'f..,.- .:L,.

We have all had plenty of it this year under 'Che energetic leadership of the cheer leaders, Kenny Mitchell fwith his trumpetl, Betty Carson, and Johnny Shepherd. The Wim, wigor, and witality of the student body under these lively leaders' was certainly inspiring. Dust storms on the football field, scores with the opponents on the large end, a lazy school spirit . . . none of these daunted the enthusiastic three I at pep chapels or games. FOOTBALL-1937 Winning four games, losing two, and tying two brought many a happy moment to Tarkio fans and a share in the conference title for the Owls. Under the competent leadership of Mr. Kyle, coaching his tenth squad, forty boys came out and worked hard. After losing their opener to Warrensburg, 9 to 0, they went undefeated until the last game of the season, when they lost a non-conference tilt with Peru, 12 to 6, played before a very large Thanksgiving clay crowd harbored from the cold in their cars. Some highlights of the season included the consistent performances of Captain Mertz Fay, Ryan, Everly, Armstrong, and Schoonover all of whom made the first and second all-conference teams None of us will forget how Mertz played in the Central game after his shoulder injury in the Jewell game But talking of h1ghl1gh15S, do not forget how the boys broke loose in the Missouri Valley game Remember V Jewell went to the trouble of claiming an undisputed conference championship Then came the action of our student body to lay claim to half of the title Jewell was lucky this year, but another year may mean a different story e squad loses Captain Mertz, Fay Adam, Marti, and Woolsey Despite the los hese valuabl e men we are looking forward to another championship team T1 page sixty two 53.958-ri., Sami? aria a 'I H aW,,g'Z Si.i nw 1 ,dawg by P' grew 1 In, wsfw' .. 0,45 sae' 130 is b defdfi' .fire lv .
