1938, THE TARKIANA TRADITION S Two ancient traditions that have withstood the ravages of time and the carelessness of man are the Victory Bell and the school song, our Alma Mater. The bell hung in the tower of Old Main for many years. The song, which was obtained through an all-school contest was written in 1911 by Dr. C. B. McMullen, who was at that time, Pro- fessor' of Psychology. The following verses are the complete song. As Tarkio studen'ts, our tribute we bring, In praise of our college, so dear. Our hearts with devotion and constancy flame, As we wish her the best of good cheer. Our mistress in knowledge, the guide of our days, As lore of the ancients we seek, She holds afond place in the depths of our hearts, And a lasting allegiance shall keep. . We sing not of halls long ivied with age, Not of elms nor of oaks with their shade, We sing not of names emblazoned with fame, Not to such shall our homage be paid. We sing not of glories of centuries past, To these, then, no paeans we raise, Though our own Alma Mater is youthful in years H We bring her our tribute of praise. An angel of light on the prairie she stands. Its billowy waves rolling by, Her brow all serene in calm or in storm, Through pain and disaster undimmed is her eye, A Minerva in mind, a Madonna in soul, As wide as the earth is her view, The mother of men and of women who stand For the things that are noble and true. She rules like a queen with a scepter of light, Impart-ing a message of life. A spirit of honor, a spirit' of truth, A spirit of peace, not of str1fe. She calls on her sons, and her daughters, each one, To live and to serve in her name. Their devotion to God, and their servlce to men, ' Fulfill all her longing for fame. g ,page thirty-seven
