The Tarleiana, 1937 TENNIS OR a lew years the Tarliio College Tennis team met with little success, win- ning only a small portion of their matches. However, it was encouraging to note that their numher of victories increased with the passing of time. The finish of the 1936 season has brought a new record of 36 individual wins out of 40 trys with no team matches lost. ln performing this record, eight men were able to win letters. Mayville and St. Joseph Junior College were each defeated seven to one. Two clean sweepsn were administered to Peru. The climax of the season was reached in the defeat of William Jewell four to two. Jewell captured hoth the doubles and singles crown in the state meet. The Tarlcio hoys were not quite con- ditioned for tournament play and were only alole to win Htin cupsn in the M. C. A. U. Meet. Letter Winners were: McCartney, Pierson, Bailey, Strom, Cunningham, Cline, Woodruff, and Boettner. W. A. A. Anna Mary Piffer . . . . President Rebecca McMullen . . A. A. is composed of all women students of Tarliio College, who are interested in athletics. Its purpose is to promote physical health, athletic achieve- ment, and a fine spirit of sportsmanship among Tarlcio women. Under the leadership of Anna Mary Piffer, the president of the organization, and with thirty-five memloers to provide a keen interclass competition in the various sports, VV. A. A. has progressed nicely this year. The seasonal sports, namely, hoclcey, volley hall, loaslcetloall, and hasehall, comprise the major sports in which memhers of the organization participate. The minor sports consist of tennis, archery, hiking, swimming, and horseloaclc riding. Various awards are given in the closing Chapel. These awards are given on a basis of the points earned in various sports. Points are carried over from year to year, hut one cannot win awards in advance to her classification in school. The awards are: letter, T pin, sweater, and blanket. VV. A. A. is a self-supporting organization. Funds are derived from dues and the sale of candy. This money is spent for awards and other expenses of the organization.
