1970 TAR-BO-RAH VOLUME XXXII Tarboro High School Tarboro, North Carolina Editor: Kathy Brock Business Manager: Kathy Roberson Advisor: Barbara Harris M EDGECOH We lie awed by the vastness of the galaxies entranced by our very existence in a world of wonders . . . wondering why roads must always turn and dreams must always be dreamt alone . 99 — Dale Wells 4 I am an individual seeking to make order out of the chaos of this world , my home , my life; searching for a meeting ground of passivity and progress; striving for a balanced life which iv ill better my soul. . . I am full of conflicting interests , questions , yearnings , beginning the long search for the why and how of things, knowing no man whether to accept life, not the choice. You must take it. choice is how. ” Henry Ward Beecher The 1970 Tar-Bo-Rah is dedicated to a faculty member who is definitely an important part in the lives of the students of Tarboro High School. Through her guidance, the complex world of math, an over¬ whelming challenge to so many of us, becomes a fascinating subject of study for even the slowest student. Seniors on the verge of smashing a slide rule in disgust, find that with her help the most dif¬ ficult problem becomes easier. To all of her often bewildered students, her patience and understanding provide reassurance. In addition to her role in the classroom, she is an irreplaceable advisor for the Junior Class. Many Junior-Seniors of the past would have suffered had it not been for her leadership. She is ready when needed to offer advice and suggestions on all problems - from the biggest construction job to the minute details in the scenery. Her faith in their ability always gives the juniors the last little push they need to finish their preparations just in time. So it is to a person of never-ending patience, knowledge, and understanding, we, the 1970 Tar- Bo-Rah staff, dedicate our annual to MRS. CHAR¬ LOTTE FORREST. 1970 Dedication 8 Watch For we shall someday be men and we will call a world ours , A world of tomorrow built on the dreams of yesterday — Dale Wells cr Summertime 14 and the living is easy r r 15 16 17 We face the world unafraid; With each day comes challenge; With each challenge comes growth. 18 19 High School Shapes Fond Memories 20 2 i £‘ «V ;, 1969 MARSHALS GOVERNOR ' S SCHOOL High School Molds Leaders STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS 22 BOYS ' STATE GIRLS’ STATE DAR GOOD CITIZEN 23 24 with others , of high years shape friendships i Miss Susan Wooten Hussey Homecoming Queen — 1969 26 I 1969 Princesses 1969 Queen s Court 30 need people 31 rr . . . the times they are a ' changing ” — Bob Dylan :fgp ■RMR Hi f § 11 iW Pf ' vpHft m 11 ■ $ ; . 1 i fgP9H[ Rt The difficulty in education is to get experience out of ideas which beat . . . and flow . . . They pasted a 8-2 regular season record in winning a playoff berth for the third time in the last five years. Fifteen returning seniors along with several other returning lettermen gave the Tigers depth in all positions; however, a few injuries at critical times throughout the year did hurt the Tigers. A ball control, bone crushing ground game combined with sporadic passing made the Tigers practically untoppable on the offense. A newly innovated Notre Dame 44 defense also was a major factor as the 1969 Ti-Ga-Tors recorded a laudable 8-3 overall record. Godfrey (Mgr.). 89 TIGERS UPSET BY KINSTON This non-conference clash was jammed with excitement as 4A Kins¬ ton slipped by the Tigers with a nar¬ row victory of 14 to 6. Playing on a wet field contributed to the mistakes made by Tarboro and enabled a fired up Red Devil team to gain victory. However, in the third quarter it looked as if the Tigers would win yet. In the last four minutes the Tigers marched 88 yards in 10 plays for the T. D. This game had little significance for the Ti¬ gers since Kinston had moved to the 4A loop. This game actually made Tarboro more determined to win in the future conference games. TIGERS INITIATE BERTIE The Tigers clawed the feathers off the Bertie Falcons in the first conference game of the year as they performed to the tune of a 58 to 6 thrashing of the Falcons. It was a night of misery for the Falcons who were crushed in every phase of the game. The Tigers ran up 306 yards rushing while Bertie lost 13. Some would say the Tigers got a little carried away as 5 Bertie players were forced to leave the game because of injuries, including 2 by way of ambu¬ lance. TARBORO ROLLS OVER WEST CARTERET A well balanced Tiger team struck like lightning for 17 points in a span of six minutes in the second period of this game with the Patriots which ended with a Tiger victory score of 23 to 0. Smooth faking and a machine-like defense chara¬ cterized the game for Tarboro. The of¬ fense showed its determination with 238 yards on the ground and 91 yards in the aid with five out of nine passes being completed. TIGERS TRIM WILLIAMSTON The Tiger ' s quickness as a rushing team gained them 251 yards on the ground against the Williamston Greenwave. Defense was the name of the game as the Ti¬ gers held Williamston to a mere four yards rushing. The final score was 21 to 7 for a Tiger win. TIGERS CRUSH HAVELOCK The Tigers scored the first four times they had possession of the football and went on to take a 50-0 win over the Havelock Rams. The Rams were penalized 18 times for a total of 207 yards while the Tigers managed to keep cool and to be content with scoring touch¬ downs. 91 TARBORO GAINS SWEET REVENGE OVER THE ROANOKE RAPIDS JACKETS. ' Revenge was sweet for Coach Doug Alexander and the Tigers as Tarboro turned back Roanoke Rapids 23 to 6. The Jackets were only allowed 8 first downs in the entire game while Tarboro gained 19. This victory was one of the most pleasing games of the season for Coach Alexander and for the 1969 Tarboro Tigers. TIGERS TRIUMPH OVER MARINERS. The Tigers exploded for 28 points in the second half to overpower East Carter¬ et. Although the Tigers had trouble with the Mariners ' passing in the first half, they came on the field as a new team in the second period. A great offensive line set the pace for Tarboro and a hardnosed defense intercepted four passes. The whole team fought diligently to regain the lost dignity that had occurred in the first half. 92 TIGERS NIP PACK IN HOMECOMING TILT Tarboro kept its hopes alive for the Northeastern Conference title by slipping past Washington 21-19 in the annual home¬ coming tilt. The victory assured the Tigers of a Class 3A play¬ off berth. The Tigers put together an explosive running attack and a staunch defense to stop the Pam Pack. Tarboro had 336 yards rushing and 37 yards in passes. The defense did equally as well though. They allowed Washington only 126 yards rushing and passing. NORTHEASTERN STERNS TIGERS Elizabeth City ' s Northeastern Eagles exploded for 14 points in the first quarter and 12 more in the fourth while shutting out the Tigers for the first time in 23 games, as they acquired the Northeast¬ ern Conference Championship with a 26-0 win over the Tigers. The Tigers could manage only four first downs and played poorly on punt returns in their only conference loss of the season. TIGERS ROMP PAST AHOSKIE The Tarboro Tigers bounced back from their defeat at the hands of Elizabeth City to defeat non-conference Ahoskie 28-6 in preparation for their post-season playoff at Roxboro. The Tigers using excellent running by their halfbacks stymied all hopes of an Ahoskie victory with three second half touchdowns. Tarboro ' s always explosive offense netted 319 yards total compared to a mere 134 yards by the Indians. ROXBORO AERIOLS DEFEAT TIGERS IN PLAYOFFS Roxboro fans compared the Tarboro ground game to that of the Greenbay Packers, but its pass defense was not pre¬ pared for a Roxboro aeriol barage which compiled 187 yards and 3 touchdowns in the second half. The Tigers ' running at¬ tack controlled the game for three quarters and the defense never did allow Roxboro any ground yardage.
