Seems just like yesterday that I was in High School. That reminds me, I must open my birthday cards. Maybe some of them are from my school pals. Here ' s one from Honolulu. Oh! It ' s from John Pollard, a pilot for the Transcontinental Air Lines, and here ' s one from Helen Blake, nurse at Johns Hopkins. I think I ' ll open this one next, it ' s from June Bourne, now a kindergarten teacher in Raleigh. Here is a nice surprise! It ' s from Sam Sheffield who says that he is a lawyer in New York. Virginia Sollee writes that she is teaching Home Economics at Manhattan and that she saw Lucile Smoot on the concert stage last week. Lucile sent a telegram from Raleigh where she is appearing tonight. I just received a special delivery from Van Martin, Doctor, who tells me that he just treated Pete Clark, Lucky Teeter ' s Chief Hell Driver, for injuries received in an accident. Chalmers Laughlin, chemical engineer. Eleanor Hyman, dress shop owner, Sarah Dunstan, wife of Bill Jones, big league bal l player, and Bob Peters, civil engineer, all joined together in sending a telegram from New York City. Here is a large signed picture of Joseph Taylor, now a movie actor for M. G. M. Hortense Lyles writes that she has just been chosen Miss America. ' ' She said that she saw Earl Purvis, coach of the Chicago Bears, and Harold Atkinson, swimming coach at Yale, talking with Mary Elizabeth Wiggins, first lady of Virginia. Here ' s an attractive post card from Elizabeth Spruill. now a stenographer at Sears Roebuck. Ruby Newsome sends me her congratulations and a ticket to her new play opening on Broadway next week. Chan Muse, professor at Peace, writes that he is crazy about this work (and his students). Celia Joyner, owner of a beauty shop in Durham, says one of her best customers is Hilda Ford, nurse at Duke. Here comes Freddie Ellrod the postman with a bunch of cards and letters. They are from Paul Noble, farmer; Mary Evelyn Batchelor, librarian; Earnest Moore, brakeman for A. C. L.; and Luther Mears, algebra teacher at T. H. S. Jean Cherry, teacher at Wilson High School, writes that she is giving up her job to get Married. (Nice going, Jean.) Charles Whitley and Martin Sasser, owners of a hardware store, dropped in to see me and we had a long chat. Here are two letters with foreign postmarks, one from Margaret Wall, Missionary in China, and one from Ted Robinson, Minister to France. Louise Coker writes that she has just written two new short stories, one about Belle Drake, famous women doctor, and one about Waylon Simmons, racetrack driver. Madeline Briley, my secretary, says that Ophelia Holland, doctor, and Jesse Ruth Martin, nurse, are going to open a hospital. Mary Agnes Anderson, owner of the Meadowbrook Night Club, writes that she received a letter from Margaret Guill, athletic director at E. C. T. C. Dorothy Armstrong is working as a torch singer in Mary Agnes ' Night Club. Margaret Andrews, director of sports at N. Y. U.; Jimmie Parker, advertising manager for Hotel New Yorker; and Vernon Fountain, banker ' s wife, are all three in New York City, writes Curtiss Sprague, cartoonist. Doris Walker writes that she is living in New York where she is designing dresses. She says that she designed a dress for Juanita Hoard, wife of the Governor of North Carolina, and one for Nellie Hudson, owner of an exclusive beauty salon in Chicago. You know, way back in 1941, I was the Class Prophet. Now that I am an established writer I think that I shall take a little vacation and visit all of my classmates of 1941. Perhaps I will even write a history of the class. There are enough famous people who were in the class to make it well worth reading. I bet I could even make a Best-Seller out of it. ALLEN LEE HARRELL, Class Prophet March 4, 1941. Page Thirty-three LOOKING THROUGH A SCRAPBOOK To the fact that the history of our class was kept in a scrapbook presented to us by our freshman class grade mothers we attribute the title and the form that our history is written in. As we look at our scrapbook the days of the past are recalled to us ; the loneliness of that first day in September 1930, when we as a class of six-year olds started on what seemed the long journey ahead to graduation, our goal. We see on the first page a picture of our class when it first started its journey to graduation day. Turning a couple of pages we discover another picture of our group ; only this time we look a little more attractive. It is a picture of the class Miss Lula Bridgers taught in 1933 and 1934. Some of us laugh but others are sad as they think, them days are gone forever. Again thumbing the page we find an even better looking photo. On it are the images of the students of the days of 1935-36, who were ruled by Miss Eva Bain. They thought they were low school seniors. After reading the accounts of our days under the rule of Misses Marrow, Niven, Norfleet, and a few other misses plus our devoted Mrs. Babcock we find an enlargement of the class of ' 41 as freshman. Our goal, we felt, was almost reached when in 1937 we a bunch of brother rats or shall we say green eggs in the form of poor fi-eshies, entered the sacred halls of high school under the watchful care of Miss Lee and Mr. Merrit. At first our biggest job was to stay out of the way of the upper classmen ; however, our inferiority complex did not last long for soon the freshmen began to stand out in school spirit and activities, in fact we became so knowing one of our teachers, Mr. Merrit, hied back to college. The seniors greatly honored us by electing June Bourne and Chalmers Laughlin to serve them as marshals. By the time we reached the important sophomore year a few had fallen by the wayside but most of us encouraged by Misses Wan-en and Jeter set our faces forward, and kept steadily onward. We had become camera shy so now we had to rely on word pictures for our scrapbook. At the senior events Earl Purvis and Lucile Smoot represented us as marshals. Near the last of the year the class, aided by our grade mothers entertained the seniors at a very nice party and dance. A big event this year was the selection of waiters and waitresses by the Juniors for the Junior- Senior Banquet. Those chosen were : June Bourne, Elizabeth Spruill, Margaret Guill, Hortense Lyles, Sarah Dunstan, Josephine Harris, Harold Atkinson, Bob Peters, Chalmers Laughlin, Martin Sasser, Pete Clark and Allen Lee Harrell. The Tarboro High School Band was started this year. Nine of our class became members. On the following page of our scrapbook we find a description of the responsibilities we had as juniors. When we came under the direction of Miss Lee, who was later replaced by Miss Upchurch, and Mr. Perian we had very little money in the treasury. After a Halloween Party and a successful stunt night together with raffling off a radio, we had almost enough to finance the great affair, the Junior-Senior Banquet. The hole in the treasury was plugged with money made on drinks and candy and with the class dues. Preparations were made and after a final week of decorating and putting on the finishing touches the gym was made ready. The night at College Inn with the floor show and dance was enjoyed by everyone. Marshals this year were Jean Cherry and Pete Clark together with Chief Marshal Cham Laughlin. Chandler Muse, Lucile Smoot, Allen Lee Harrell, Virginia Sollee, Cham Laughlin, Eleanor Hyman, Margaret Wall and Bob Peters were initiated into the Beta Club. On the last leaflet of our scrapbook we find the climax of our school days. There is an account of our very important senior year. Under the leadership of Mr. Ives and Miss Upchurch, plans were made for our annual. Our class made history when they elected Mrs. Laughlin grademother for the ninth successive year — as long as we have had grademothers. March 21 saw the class mascots, Peggy Roberson and Hal Liverman, become man and wife at the mascot wedding sponsored by the class. Work on the annual was kept steadily going by Helen Blake, June Bourne, Van Martin, Jimmie Parker, Jean Cherry and other members of the staff. Finally on March 21, amid great rejoicing the annual was turned over to the publishers. On the night of April 25, our class was entertained by the Juniors at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. This, the biggest event of the school year, in a patriotic setting was greatly enjoyed by everyone. The last few weeks of school were indeed joyous ones, for we had parties and festivities of all kinds. Finally on the 31st of May our goal was reached! That night, in graduation exercises held in the auditorium we were given our diplomas. It can now be said that the class of six year-olds who started out 6o bravely in 1930 had after many trials and tribulations intermingled with all the joys and sorrows of happy school days, finally reached its goal.
