A TRIBUTE TO NORTH CAROLINA By the American History Class, Tarboro High School, Tarboro, North Carolina Beginning with the waters of the Atlantic and traveling westward with the sun through the fertile plains of a rich farming country, across the famous sand- hills of the Piedmont, and on to the lofty peaks of the great Appalachians, stretches a state, honestly proud, yet fully deserving the ambitious motto, Esse Quam Videri. Though North Carolina ' s economic life does not reveal magic, its abundant natural resources are now being developed to the greatest advantage by its plain, skillful and energetic people, just as in the past North Carolina worked out its salvation by utilizing the forces within itself. So broad and varied are these natural resources and so diligently have they been utilized that, if an impassable barrier were built around the state, we, the people, would suffer no inconvenience. For food, we are supplied with grain for bread, fruits and vegetables in abundance, and meats from cattle, hogs, poultry, and fisheries; for clothing, we are supplied with cotton and wool woven in our mills: for fuel, we have wood and coal from our western hills. These, the necessities and conveniences of a full life, are found within our very bound- aries. Added to this independence upon others for the comforts of life, we find a temperate climate providing both summer and winter resorts, unvisited by floods and dust storms, wind and earthquake. Truly North Carolina is amply blessed by Nature. This State has always been the home of democracy. One of the stripes of the American flag is evidence of the firm faith in true democracy shown by the plain people of North Carolina. Its citizens are 99 per cent native born Americans — descendants of Englishmen, Scotch Highlanders, Scotch-Irish, and Germans. With such a heritage how can they fail to look forward to a rich and prosperous future? Then let all who love us, love the land that we live in. (As happy a region as on this side of heaven) Where Plenty and Freedom, and Peace smile before us; Raise aloud, raise together, the heart thrilling chorus! COMMITTEE Willie Warren Dorothy Pender Faith Whitlark Warren Taylor Walter Hargrove Frances Long Read by Helen Slaughenhaupt, Class of ' 36, at the Fourteenth Annual North Carolina State Sunday, Washington Memorial Chapel, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, March 23, 1937.
