Most of the high school boys and a few of the girls learned the game quickly and were given permission to play it during their free periods. In February, 1954, a school tournament was held to determine the best player in high school with Oscar Sauer winning that distinction. 34 X K 2 2 Z! A brief summary of the various activities follows: GRADE TOUCH FOOTBALL---The Tigers and the Cubs outdistanced the other teams in the battle for the championship. The Cubs captured first place with 11 wins and one loss. The running and passing of Larry Woodwick were too much for the other teams. The Tigers won 10 and lost Z games to finish second, The Red Sox took third, the Browns fourth and the Braves, who failed to win a game, last. GRADE SOFTBALL---Twelve rather easy wins gave the Wildcats the title in this league. The real battle occurred in the fight for the other four places. A one game margin gave the Sunnysides second place over the Meatballs. The Jugheads finished fourth and the Cottontails last.
