The Taps' TirsT Team, however, gained much presTige by placing Third in The EasTern Championship oT The U.S. Gene MarTin came in in TirsT place and was recognized as one of The besT high- school cross-counTry men in The EasT. This same Team Then capTureol The SecTionals and was chosen To repre- senT SecTion 9 in The STaTe lvleeT. IT was a chance The Taps had long awaiT- ed and when The Tinal Tally was made Tappan Zee was declared CLASS B STATE CHAMPS. MarTin again gained honors by finishing TirsT.
