Vice President, Church ‘ . i Youth Group President, Fs : Ski Club TANTASQUA SCHOLARS. O nce again it is time to honor the TANTASQUA scholars. Obviously it is not possible to identify each individual who has excelled academically while here at TANTASQUA. As a result of this restriction we have chosen the two seniors, a boy and a girl, who have come to symbolize through their dedication, hard work, perseverance and old-fashioned study, the success that crowns these efforts. It is particularly appropriate that we so honor all of these people in this time of educational turmo il. The society is be- set with those Cassandras who decry the ruination of the Republic as the result of our inferior educational system. These aforementioned students all negate that popular this criticism is unfounded. It would appear that whenever some fifteen percent of the student body is eligible for the National Honor Society, which has rather stringent criteria, then perhaps there is still hope for the society. It should further be noted that the approximately sixty percent of our graduating seniors who go on to institutions of higher learning also give strong evidence that not all the criticism leveled at the American high school is valid. The student-scholar eulogized on these pages offer substantive proof that there are still highly motivated individuals who get from the institution all that it has to offer. It should be evident that this motivation is derived from a caring, con- cerned family where strong emphasis is placed on the value of education. Even though all the desirable factors are present in the home environment, these people had to have the personal drive and the will to succeed. Academic success is only achieved through dint of hard work and personal sacrifice. Keeping in mind all of the above, we the staff of the 1989 TANTASQUAN dedicate this page as a tribute to those here at our school who have excelled academically. Many times academic achievement is ignored in the hurly-burly of school life and the real purpose of education is overlooked. But we, the staff of this yearbook, intend that for one shining moment anyway, they will, as Shakespeare said, “Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb’red”. And upon that note, we hope that our humble words will somehow serve as an incentive. 16 |
