Some of our fondest memories will stem from our time shared together at Tantasqua. We are learning more about life each day and experiencing many things for the first time. Because we are young, we have an excuse to try new things and sometimes make mistakes. We have discovered what youth can bring to us and just how enjoyable it can be. As we grow apart and go on with our lives these memories will stay with all of us. No matter how old we are there will always be a part of ourselves that will remain FOREVER YOUNG. Since then he has devoted himself to the education of English students at Tantasqua, and in 1961, to students at Nichols College. Mr. Charette went to Assumption College, received his Masters from Boston University, and took courses at Bowdoin College, the University of Massachusetts, and the University of Connecticut. In his three decades of teaching Mr. Charette feels he’s met many “wonderful and interesting people.” He’s seen many faculty and curriculum changes, including his own appointment as the Department Chairman for the English Department. With his retirement this year, Mr. Charette would like to travel to Europe and the Orient. We all wish him the best and thank him for all the patience, dedication and caring he has shown us. Roger Charette is an inspiration, a role model, a guiding light to educators — a man of knowledge, a teacher and a father figure to students. In my twenty-three years at Tantasqua, he has been all of these things but above all, a friend. Peter McDonald Roger Charette is truly A Man for All Seasons: intelligent, kind, tolerant, wise, and decent. Since 1958 he has been my Latin teach- er, my advisor, my Department Chairperson, and my friend. He has touched my life with his integral goodness and his sharing, pro- found knowledge. Roger is a Teacher’s Teacher — the Artist for this, his eternal student. Susan E. Martin During the past twenty-seven years that | have known Roger Char- ette he has always been a gentleman, both in the modern and the traditional sense. His gentle good humor, wise counsel and warm friendship has been an inspiration to all his colleagues in the Tan- tasqua English Department. And this particularly applies to me, one of the old guard, one of those few remaining who helped implement our present elective system, still one of the finest in the area. Thanks for all you have done and all that you have been to all of us for these many years. Best wishes and much happiness in your retirement Rog! Ken Blake Classical lit, a down-east wit, and often A.P. too But we'll never forget, Dear Mr. Charette, And his College English Review! A man with class, he helped kids pass, his deficits were few, But what did we get that we'll never forget? His college English Review! When he used to teach Latin, the hatches he’d batten AMO, AMAS, AMOO! But the tightest ship, that he ever let rip Was his College English Review! Voracious, loquacious, pugnacious, fallacious Salubrious verbals imbue, without pontification, he made a sensation Of College English Review! True, this class was inspired, but Roger’s retired And now what will they do? Though this class has much merit, don’t let me inherit His college English Review! Kit Randall It’s difficult for me to express the debt | owe to Roger Charette. | first met him over sixteen years ago, in the job interview that led to my becoming a Tantasqua English teacher. Roger guided me over many a rocky trail during those “‘first-year-teacher” days. Because of Roger's encouragement and wisdom, the inevitable frustrations of my rookie experience became easier to accept. He was there to listen; he was there to help. He was there to show the virtues of staying calm. There are few people who are capable of displaying an interest as genuine as Roger’s when it comes to listening to what others have to say. His sage advice was so quietly rational and “down-to-earth” that | always left his office with “lighter shoulders”. Teachers and students who have come to know Mr. Charette over the many years he served at Tantas- qua know exactly what I am talking about. We will miss him dearly, but his absence will not diminish the positive influence he has had upon us all. Ed Bansak | have known Roger Charette for only a short time, but | will re- member his quiet humor and his generosity. Despite the fact that Roger has surely seen and heard it all before — he was never too busy to encourage, to reassure, or to admit that he still exper- ienced the strange, unsettling mixture of joy and frustration that is the inheritance of all be- ginning teachers. Joan Walter Mr. Charette has been a great inspi- ration and mentor to me over the years. His support has been unend- ing and his advice fruitful. He has helped me shape my career. His dedication to his students, and his genuine interest in people is one of his greatest virtues. | will never for- get Roger Charette. Nancy Sawyer R. Bombard Assistant Principal C. Obviously it is not possible to identify each individual who has excelled academically while here at TANTASQUA. As a result of this restriction we have chosen the two seniors, a boy and a girl, who have come to symbolize through their dedication, hard work, perseverance and old-fashioned study, the success that crowns these efforts. It is particularly appropriate that we so honor all of these people in this time of educational turmo il. The society is be- set with those Cassandras who decry the ruination of the Republic as the result of our inferior educational system. These aforementioned students all negate that popular this criticism is unfounded. It would appear that whenever some fifteen percent of the student body is eligible for the National Honor Society, which has rather stringent criteria, then perhaps there is still hope for the society. It should further be noted that the approximately sixty percent of our graduating seniors who go on to institutions of higher learning also give strong evidence that not all the criticism leveled at the American high school is valid. The student-scholar eulogized on these pages offer substantive proof that there are still highly motivated individuals who get from the institution all that it has to offer. It should be evident that this motivation is derived from a caring, con- cerned family where strong emphasis is placed on the value of education. Even though all the desirable factors are present in the home environment, these people had to have the personal drive and the will to succeed. Academic success is only achieved through dint of hard work and personal sacrifice. Keeping in mind all of the above, we the staff of the 1989 TANTASQUAN dedicate this page as a tribute to those here at our school who have excelled academically. Many times academic achievement is ignored in the hurly-burly of school life and the real purpose of education is overlooked. But we, the staff of this yearbook, intend that for one shining moment anyway, they will, as Shakespeare said, “Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb’red”. And upon that note, we hope that our humble words will somehow serve as an incentive. 16 | Senior Class Officers President Vice President Steve Duff Angela Aslami Treasurer Secretary Ted Malvey Heather Egan Vocational Vice-President Donny Reed Emilie Abair Em L: chocolate, Latin lovers, ice cream, friends DL: cockroaches, trauma man FS: Guess what?!? NHS has helped establish a tutor- ing program where members help fellow students who are having problems with their studies. Every year they sponsor a pancake breakfast that helps them earn money for scholarships they give out to graduating seniors at the end of the year. National Honor Society members are students of ex- emplary academic achieve- ment who donate their time to help those in the commu- nity as well. 82 National Honor Society NHS Officers: Derek May, Christie Botelho, Alanna Coolong, Dave Cook -. As the main source of Student Council funds it proved, this year, to be very pros- perous. The winter season is al- ways a fun time of the year especially when you're giving and that’s exactly what the Student Council did. Visiting the Senior Center in Sturbridge was for the Seniors a change of pace and one man com- mented that it was ‘‘won- derfully enlightening” to see young adults interest- ed in the members of their community. Other festive ideas such as Secret Santas and carnations allowed the whole student body to become involved in the Christmas spirit. January proved to be a month of preparation. Such projects as the Bor- der Conference Talent Show and the Border Conference Sleepover took time and much work to prepare. However when February arrived the Border Conference Talent Show and Sleepover were very successful. Some of the projects that are ahead for Student Council are the annual Blood Drive in March and a walk-a-thon and shoot- a-thon to support Easter Seals. Tantasqua Student Council works hard to achieve the goals they set down for themselves and looking back on this year it is clear to see they have gone above and beyond any goals for this 88-89 year. 83 The Math Team is a group of students who get together four times a year torepresent their school at Math Meets. There are no requirements to be a mathlete except a de- sire to fiddle with math prob- lems and to have fun. Highlights of this year’s trip were the “Miss Paxton 1988” Pageant, killer ultimate frisbee, the Galliard with Dr. Aberspastic, and the Rap Masters. VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE Vocal Jazz Ensemble is new to Tantasqua this year. The group re- hearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays under the direction of Ms. Werlin. Brenda Worrell led the team in scoring and has established a new scoring record at THS of 59 goals in 4 years of varsity play. The previous record of 58 goals was held by Heather Reece who graduat- ed last year. Brenda was also selected as a member of the Division I, Central Mass All Stars. Border Conference All Stars were Heather Egan, Brenda Worrell, Kelly Komar and Jenny Porter. Some other season highlights were playing 2 home night games, one of which was an exciting Border Conference victory over Shepherd Hill and the strength and character of our team is illustrated in our coming back from a 4-0 deficit against Millbury to finish the game with a 5-5 tie. There will be 11 varsity players returning to Coach Emrich next year, along with a strong group of J.V. players, who will ateempt to win back the Conference title which has been ours for the past 3 years.
