In store for you in your Junior year we have numerous ghastly tortures designed specifically for the demoralization of the 16 year old: The Chinese water torture of College English Review, each drip a sesquipedalian masterpiece like consanguinity, antediluvian, bacchanalian, iconoclastic or imbroglio (a type of Italian sausage). Not to forget bolster, holster, flux, crux, glut, glib, and guffaw. Further agony abounds in the fingernail-pulling of Chemistry, or, worse yet, the thumbscrews of Honors Physics. Most undergo the forced-feeding of U.S. History and the rack of Mathematics — there are a variety to choose from, ranging from the annoying tickling of Algebra to being dragged across the stony plain by a horse called Analysis. Added to these traditional terrors we have the keelhauling they call Drivers’ Ed, the scourge of school lunches, and some experimental surgery in the form of PSATs. The only thing that saves the suffering student is his sophisticated powers of evasion. He arrives late at 11:00, leaves early at 12:00, and skips E Block. He can forge a pass with his eyes closed, and knows the woods like the back of his hand. He has the bell times memorized to the minute, and can discipline his travel so that he is always 19.6 seconds late, and can just squeeze in the door as the teacher tries to shut it. He also knows how to get through the year with less than minimum credits. Taking all things into consideration, Junior year is probably your best year for dropping out. “ Greg Dunn . tt bititi init tate aetEE 63 64 SOPHOMORES! Your sophomore year never goes quite like you planned it. For one thing, your arena scheduling never comes out the way you wanted it, and you end up taking second- choice courses. You expected at least some degree of sophistication when you migrated from across the street. You weren’t prepared for the cascading maps and undecipherable tests of Western Civ. You may find yourself waist-deep in the manure of Geometry, one of the most depressive, oppressive, and unimpressive factors of the sophomore year. However, you work hard, sort of, and, by the end of the year, after 150 total hours of classwork, and almost 3 total hours of homework, most can distinguish a triangle from a square. Most. You were probably determined not to make a fool of yourself, but you did anyway. You got lost, stepped on the backs of people’s shoes in the hallway, and tried to open somebody else’s locker under the impression that it was your own. You also probably realized, after brief meditation, that the upperclassmen are just as confused as you are. Science of the Year: Biology, the rectum of all sciences, biologically speaking. You have probably suffered through your second and last year of a language, probably French or Spanish, both of which are about as exciting as going to the bakery to watch the buns rise. Now that your sophomore year is over, you can exhale with audible relief and grit your teeth in preparation for the en year. De . Greg Dunn ae ine “mee Res 65 6 WE’VE GOT ...
