How can one possibly explain the 1977 baseball season under first year coach Mike Dube. Where does one start? The only possible place to go is to the States and the local news. ‘The Tantasqua Regional theme was ‘One More Time’ at the start of the state Division 2 championship baseball game Saturday at Renfrew Field. Little did the small army of fans realize it would have to make the 230-mile trek one more time to clinch it. The Warriors learned a few things in the first go-round before the rains came and washed out the title game after four full innings Saturday. The first was to cover the right field line against Drury lead-off hitter Steve Pennock. The second was that the Warriors could hit and run on Drury High starter Glen Boyer almost at will. The third was that ‘Big Macs’ don’t do the job ... And it was the Whopper that came through for the Warriors. After stopping at Burger King for lunch, Tantasqua battled its way out of two deficits to cop the state championship with the same cast of heroes- John Ferrara, Mark St. Jean, Paul Grignon and Nick DiGre- gorio (in no particular order) that had gotten it to the pinnacle ... To be sure, the game was the least artistic of all the Warrior playoff wins. The Warriors had gotten great pitching every game, but Casey was hit hard when he came back on Sunday, and reliever Grignon couldn't find the plate and walked four of the five batters he faced in the five-run seventh inning. Only Hutchinson, the forgotten second starter in the rotation, could set the Blue Devils down, after giving up a two-run bouncer off the third base bag to the first batter he faced. Tantasqua’s speed and aggressiveness were as important as any other factor in leading it to the crown. Each time a Warrior reached base, the Blue Devils were overly aware that he would probably go, they were powerless to stop it, and the result was a batch of costly errors ... AT TIMES ‘I thought I had lost it for these kids.’ Dube said later. ‘It would have been a tough thing to live with for twelve months.’ He didn’t have to live with it even for a half hour. The last Warrior rally of the season (“Old fashioned, crazy, go-get-em, juice, baseball,’ Dube called it) unfolded in the bottom of the seventh as had almost all the others, with the Warriors running helter-skelter around the bases and someone (or two) punching a key hit ... Labonte’s liner to left made it official, and only a couple of nice stops by DiGregorio, who had moved to Hutch’s spot at short, were needed in the top of the ninth, to put the stamp on it. The Warrior team bus was met at the Sturbridge Turnpike exit by two fire engines, four police cruisers and an entourage of cars and the parade found its way to the Sturbridge Plaza and then to the Brookfield Road High School where it was met by a carpet to the front door and an additional 400 fans. ‘The town went crazy,’ said Dube, who got the toss into the pond at the high school from his players. ‘I told them to soak it all in. They deserve it.’” The team, aside from their championship season, also passed most of the school’s records in baseball. They were known for stolen bases, home runs, among other things. After being feted by the town all through the summer with banquets and testimonial dinners, the team settled down, with new jackets and status to await the return of spring and a new baseball season. DAN BOONE-“Dan”, swift, our ‘Booneshot’, missed bus, good bat, Jim’s tackling dummy, up from minors, next years stealer. ‘Just one more time and maybe the local sportswriter will realize that that little jitterbug that goes in to pinch run really has the improbable name of Dan Boone.’’“’I can’t be- lieve it.” BOB GREGORY- “Bob”, runs waved in champ, low ball pitch- er up from minors, super smile, good bat, anxious for next year. “Just one more time for Bob Gregory, who has spent his playoff in the third base coaches box, to frantically wave another runner home, then dive on top of the celebration in back of home plate.” “We're going to do it, Coach.” THEY’RE NOT.” road.” y ... We lost only when we failed to do things. Hey, we've been looking to get here all season long, and here we are. We’re out to win five - one at a time.’”’ JUST one more time and Mike Dube can rip off the baseball shirt, throw it into the pond in leftfield and proclaim that he’s got better things to do than stand in a funny colored suit, yell numbers that mean nothing and tell jokes. Dube has just one more chance to plead for “Juice, gimme some juice out there.” Dube said it last night, a little after six, just before the Warrior bus flew home from Quincy. “It’s been one hell of a playoff series.’” Just one more time now ... It was de- finitely a learning year for the squad as they had matches against schools such as Mount Herman Academy of Northfield, with several years of experience, Volleyball for girls on the highschool level is very new in this area, but it is a very exciting sport and with thirteen girls returning to the squad, out of sixteen, we look forward to avery promising second year. This year's team was very talented and played some fine basketball. Although the year's record — may not indicate it, the team was one of the best to come along in quite awhile. They played very competitive and exciting games. Many of them were lost by only a few points. Senior co-captains Chris Grubert and Bill Dickson were both named to the Border Conference All Stars Team. Chris was also given honorable mention in the Telegram and Gazette. 1976-77 WARRIORETTE BASKETBALL The '76-'77 Tantasqua Var- sity Girls Basketball season com- pleted a reversal of the previous year, going from 6-12 to 12 and 6. The returning juniors and sen- ior captain Andrea Porter proved that a years experience and team play could achieve success. Through the season started slowly, losing four of the first eight games, the girls won eight of the next ten. It was a season of maturing and development for all the players. Improvement is the key (in) explaining the girl's success. Their knowledge of the game and ability to exe- cute under pressure assured the team a District III play off posi- tion- the first ever in a girls program. The girls went from last in the Border Conference to second place. The individual accomplish- ments were impressive as each player contributed superior ef- forts to the overall team. A record doesn't always indicate how suc- cessful a season has been, but success can be measured by what a team gets out of the com- petition. The 1976-1977 season was our second year as avarsity sport and the team showed tre- mendous improvement over last year. In the final standings, only three points separated the last six teams. We had two big Firsts this year: Our first win as a varsity team and our 5-0 shellacking of Southbridge during the second half of the season (after nearly tieing them the first half). Coach Cronin felt this was the best group of young men he has had the privilege of coach- ing--they worked well together on the ice and off the ice--and what they lacked in skills they made up with enthusiasm and hustle. They played well against Bay Path and Grafton, the two power-houses in the League--and played much better hockey the second half of the year. Captains Steve Lazarz and Tom Cronin gave a tremendous boost to the team leader- ship and will be sorely missed next year along with our other seniors, Jeff Tasse, Mike Simp- son, Ken Rose and Bill Ling. 3 GIRLS GYMNASTICS ROW1, LEFT TO RIGHT; J. ena R. The ups and downs of old droopy-nose The much-heralded superjet, the droopy- nosed Concorde, became commercially air- borne in 1976. But only just. It costs $60 million and flies so fast that you can leave London after breakfast and reach Washington in time for breakfast. Still, not everyone was won over by such speed. Environmentalists, whose arguments ended the U.S.’s own SST program five years ago, almost managed to shoot down the Franco-British Concorde, too. Although Ford's secretary of transportation, William Coleman Jr., permitted the plane to land in New York and Washington, New York said no, because of the anticipated noise and pollution. Until that issue is settled in court it will still be an open ques- tion whether the Concorde, which depends on the lucrative transatlantic run, will become an economic disaster or the successful harbin- ger of a new age of flight Patti Sm In South Africa, murderous reprisals In June the black ghetto of Soweto outside of Johan- nesburg exploded with the worst racial violence in South Africa’s history. Angered by a law requiring the use in schools of Afrikaans (a language of the white minor- ity), black students rioted, boydetted classes and fomented workers’ strikes. In a characteristically iron-fisted re- sponse, the government answered with police dogs, tear gas and bullets, killing scores of students, like the victim at right, who is dying in the arms ofa grief-stricken comrade. But the rioting continued through the summer, and by year’s end some 400 people were dead, nearly all of them blacks The root cause of the violence is the government's continuing policy of apartheid. Although some of its more humiliating provisions have been repealed, blacks are still barred from many desirable occupations and must carry much-despised identity cards. Officials have imprisoned hundreds of suspected black activists without due process, on the grounds that “the country is in a state of continuous, undeclared war.” A sad day for old glory - busing in Boston.
