Wilson The duties of a superintendent of the schools in one town are numerous and often tedious. Multiply this by five towns and you have the job of Roland Wilson, superintendent of the schools in School Union 61. Formerly a teacher at Tantasqua, and later its principal, Mr. Wilson is well acquainted with the problems and needs of the five towns (Brimfield, Brookfield, Holland, Sturbridge, and Wales) that are included in Union 61. His devotion to education and his knowledge of the educational needs of the area have made him an excellent and well-liked leader in the educational community known as School Union 61. 18 Principal John F. Canavan John Canavan, principal of Tantasqua Regional High School, is a man deeply concerned with the educational needs of today’s youth. He Is eager to get to the very core of the problems at THS and encourages all students to discuss their problems with him. Although this is only Mr. Canavan’s second year at T.H.S., he has already become deeply involved in student life and the educational community by being elected president of the Quaboag Valley Basketball League as well as various other activities essential for presenting a well-rounded education to the students at Tantasqua. 19 Assistant Principals Garfield Norton Edward Bzdula Students at Tantasqua are grateful for the wonderful assistant principals we have, who have the often unpleasant duty of maintaining law and order. Mr. Norton and Mr. Bzdula are always available, helpful, kind and understanding with adequate knowledge of the problems facing the youth of today. 20 Their Job Is Guidance The school counselor’s major concern is the normal developmental needs and problems of all pupils. He is dedicated to the idea that a pupil will reach self fulfillment if he is helped to understand himself and to gain a realistic view of his capabilities. Although this need is fundamental for everyone, individuals differ in their practical interests and in their requirements for the future. With this fact in mind, the English Department has organized a program which attempts to provide our students with a thorough knowledge of the English language as well as focusing on the individual needs, interests, and talents of our students. Quality is the watchword in education today. The ideal of quality in achievement and in content is not new to business education. Business education has been most conscious, over the years, of the level of excellence expected of our graduates and the co nstant appraisal by the business community of the quality of our instruction. As we face the challenges inherent in the decade ahead, we at Tantasqua constantly renew our dedication to quality by achieving new depth and new dimensions in our instruction. SSVIOMIONN Just One More Year To Go The year 1968-1969 has been a most important and exciting one for the Junior class. One of the first events of the year was the arrival of their class rings, in October. Money was raised both through class dues and through the class'dance, “Happiness is. . . an Experiment”. Both went very well, and the money was put to good use at their first prom, the combined Junior-Senior Prom held in April. These occasions will remain among their memories for years to come. An important subject on the minds of many Juniors is the preparation for the years following graduation. Whether theic choice is college or career, this decision is a very important responsibility, and must be very carefully made. The Juniors look forward to their Senior year, the final one of six happy years at Tantasqua Regional High School. Officers; S. Varnum, Tres., K. O’Connor, Sec., D. Day, V.P., D. The outcome of this election was; Robert Jefferson, Pres., David Powell, V.P., Lynn Perry, Sec., and Debra Plimpton, Tres. The elected officers worked hard with the class advisers to make it a successful year. And successful it was. There was a substantial increase in class dues paid this year as opposed to last year. The class dance was successful and the people who worked on the various committees are to be congratulated for doing such a fine job. This year was profitable in all ways and we hope next year it will be too. When my invention is finished I'll rule the world. The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone. . . Along with the regular activities at school, they held their own dance in May to raise money. They also had the task of collecting class dues to perform. This was started after the election of officers. Those elected were; Catherine Robidoux, Pres., Noela Corriveau, V.P., Janet Lucier, Sec., and Elizabeth Hedlund, Tres. Some members of the class participated in the production of two freshmen plays which were presented to a full high school assembly. It was an entertaining hour for all. This had never been done at this grade level and the outcome was very interesting. Joseph Earls was elected President with his fellow officers: Michele James, V.P., Keri Hutchinson, Sec., and Denice Vilandre, Tres. The seventh grade also took part in some skating parties along with the eighth grade. These were held on the pond several times during the winter and were a big success. The Warrior baseball team finished the 1968 season with 10 victories and 6 losses. The Border Baseball Conference, in its 2nd year of existence, saw Southbridge and Bartlett finish as co-champions with Tantasqua close behind them. Some of the seasons highlights were: Our trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York, our shutout wins over Bartlett and Southbridge, the feeling of accomplishment after our 14 inning victory over Monson and having Pete Neiberg, Al Glass, Al Dhembe, and Bob Warren selected to the league all star team. Al Glass, Al Dhembe, and Bob Warren were Tri-captains for the 1968 team, and Roland Armstrong was elected captain for 1969. The annual Stuart award for leadership, scholarship and contribution to the team was presented to Pitcher-Outfielder Al Glass and the first annual Norman “Bumpy” Holett award went to Al Dhembe and Bob Warren. The 1968 season, in general, was a solid one for the Warriors and the team is looking forward to 1969. Led by Tri-Captains Jim Woodward, Roland Armstrong, and Dick Green, the 1968 Warrior football team captured the Central Massachusetts Class B Championship with an outstanding 6-1-2 record. With the loss of such stalwarts as Al Dhembe, Bob Warren, Glen Biron and others from the 1967 tremendous 7-2 team, Coach Farland and his staff expected 1968 to be a rebuilding year. Ed Tefft, Steve Lorch and the Tri-Captains were the only seniors on the squad. The rapid development of several young and inexperienced Sophomores and Juniors was obvious however by opening day, as the Green and Gold, led by Jim Woodward's four touchdowns, trounced powerful Wachusett Regional 25-6. Just as the Warriors had knocked them from the undefeated ranks a year ago, the Athol Red Raiders found their home field and the pouring rain to their liking, as they dealt the valiant T.H.S. gridders their first and only loss of the season, 24-0. November 2, 1968 is a date that will long be remembered in Tantasqua’s football history. For the first time in eight years, the Southbridge Hi gh Pioneers invaded the reservation. The Pioneers jumped off to an early lead in the first quarter. The rest of the day, however, was the Green and Gold, as the well-trained Warriors refused to panic, and late in the period took a lead which they never relinquished. The remainder of the game was a defensive battle with Southbridge scoring late in the game to bring the final score to 22-12. For the first time ever, the huge V.F.W. trophy would rest at Tantasqua. 107 Tefft returns kick off. Jim Woodward carrying. The many jobs of a coach. The council approves activity requests, sponsors campaigns to raise money for needy sources, provides the school with a student store, sponsors educational assemblies and social gatherings for pleasure. The council tries to solve problems brought up by students and tries to make our school a better institution. Each year members attend state and national conventions to learn techniques for solving problem situations in our own school. In the summer of 1968, Nancy Pontbriand was chosen to attend a state convention at Westfield State College for six days. At this convention she obtained much usable knowledge and experience which has helped the council solve problems and present new ideas. 130 G. LePage, Pres., N. Pontbriand, V. Pres., J. The students who know what hard work is are the students on the Tantasquan yearbook staff. These students work very hard with layouts, picture taking and trying to meet monthly deadlines. Hard work on the part of the staff of the 1969 yearbook and the help of their adviser, Mr. Blake, has brought many new ideas to this year’s book. This year another mystery was the guessing of Pocohontas’ birthday. Many guesses were received and the winner won a record album of his choice. The Tomahawk © staff works — very diligently to get the newspaper published five times a year. The staff tries to provide something for everyone in the paper. This year some new features were added to the paper. They were a comic strip and a crossword puzzle. These were included in the paper with the regular features of club announcements, letters to Pocohontas and the Smoke Signals. Another X Roxann and the school is yours! The girls can usually be found practicing Thursday night in the gym. Late last year the team purchased new uniforms with money earned from their annual candy sale. This money is also used to purchase “T’”” emblems for one year members and white blazers for members who have participated for two years. Graduating Seniors also receive a small trophy. All these projects are handled under the thoughtful guidance of their advisor Mrs. Lynn Chase. Patty Reed, Sec. We have learned many things in one short year of working together on the book. We have truly become aware of the sights and sounds around us and have come into a deeper and more meaningful relationship with our school. The weeks and months of hard work carry with them many wonderful memories to cherish for evermore. We on the staff of the 1969 TANTASQUAN hope that our readers will receive as much enjoyment from the book as we received in putting it together. Yours truly, Chris Szumilas Editor-in-chief 1969 TANTASQUAN The staff of the 1969 TANTASQUAN would like to sincerely thank the following people who have made this book possible: The American Yearbook Company, Donald Lendry, Loring Studios, Fred Landry, Mr. Canavan, and especially Mr. Kenneth Blake for his extreme patience with us. 200 Dy pee nr =, en ie
