FOREWORD | am the Willow. | dwell here hour after hour Day after day. | have seen the beginning Been a part of the progress And look forward in dreams. You are but a passing thought, A child of the forest And one day parent of the child. Today you have the right to claim your own Tonight you shall possess no longer, nor care to. So precious now, so important. | understand. | have seen you before. Maybe you comb your hair differently, Learn from newer textbooks, Or even act sophisticated and put on airs. But you are not different. Your tinkling test tube is not the first, Neither is it the last. Your triumphant record will be surpassed And your fancies will vanish as old fashioned. You are time passing through this low slung expanse, Striking an ember with your knowledge. Squeeze a tear from cloudy eyes They shall come easy in time. Tears shall be a part of you, they shall claim you. | am the Willow. | know. It would be difficult to stand here and not see. The cold drafts roar through my branches | am live, | shiver. But | am sheltered; The reflections of many lights encompass me As | continue to grow in the center of student life. These are my students, My accomplishments. | am proud. Tomorrow you may return to visit me, | shall be here, And | shall be strengthened And have a right to grow old in contentment. 1 am the Willow You are my branches.
