Pappas Superintendent of Schools For the future of all of you, | wish the ultimate in succ ess. Your school, Tantasqua, has made available to you those facets of an educational program that will enhance your potential for a successful future. Now, the decisions are yours, the choices you make will be the determining factors in the degree of your success. Set high standards for yourselves and choose wisely. Leave in your path of accomplishments these high standards as a goal on which future graduates may set their sights. Know that we will be following your progress, and that your success is also our’ success. Roland W. Wilson Principal Demand for the highly educated man is a consequence of the kind of life we live today. Technological change and increasing social complexity are characteristics of our times which require a higher degree of education than ever before on the part of the members of our society. We need more professionals, more proficient workers, more scholars, more proficient management; but above all we need a better educated citizenry. This demand requires us to examine our efforts and evaluate our progress as we become participants in this competitive world. Our program at Tantasqua provides the education necessary to meet the increasing demand for people to advance to higher education. Our programs have as their specific purpose the development of the individual to the limit of his ability, socially, culturally and academically. Each facet is equally important and essential to the indi- vidual and to society in general. Each student must have a basic education sufficient to his needs, and others must continue in education to become the intellectual and professional group of tomorrow. The challenge to meet this demand is great but you must prepare for this challenge and seize opportunity when it is presented. Your growth is your country’s growth and survival. A third quarter pass, Booth to Lippe, and Co-Capt. Greg Dickinson’s two point conversion provided the Tantasqua points. This first victory even over the Panthers was preserved by the Warriors’ vaunted defensive unit which allowed a total of only 63 points all season. A sensational goal line stand in the last period left no doubt as to the superiority of Tantasqua’s front five of Haney, Tetreault, Healy, Nolan, and Hyland. The offense also proved explosive many times during the season; the 44 points scored on a highly-rated Plainfield eleven gave ample evidence of the Warriors’ power. Fullback Dickinson thrilled the crowds with his crushing thrusts through the middle and field general Dick Booth guided a vastly improved air attack. The season provided several outstanding memories besides the Palmer game. In the flashiest individual performance of the season halfback Dick Fortier broke loose for touchdown runs of 24, 65, and 89 yards in the 22-0 triumph over Leicester. Other memorable moments: Ron Lippe’s interception at Westboro; Ken Hedlund’s field goal against Millis; Ron Walulak’s drive for the extra points at Minnechaug; Co-Capt. Mark LePain’s inspiring leadership; Bumpy Howlett’s booming 67 yard punt at Plainfield. Four of the schools, Southbridge, Northampton, Woodstock, and Williamsburg, were swept aside by a perfect 15-50 score. Team members carried away eight trophies in the course of the season, as well as winning first place honors in the Knights of Columbus, Wachusett Invitational, and Western Mass. Interscholastic Cross-Country League meets, and bringing home the league championship trophy. Losing only three members through graduation, the team expects another banner season next year under the expert tutelage of Coach Ted Steensen. CAPTAIN RON McCUE leads the way. KNEELING: R. TRACK Tantasqua can again be proud of its track team. The track and field men posted a bright season by easily defeating five teams. Teams from Oxford, Grafton, Leicester, Webster Academy and Southbridge all left the Warrior hunting grounds with their heads bowed. The Warriors suffered only three defeats and those by close scores. Rickard Boucher, Jim Westwell and Greg Dickinson led the scorers for Tantasqua with 66%2, 65, and 56 points respectively. Other highlights of the season included record smashing runs by Ron McC ue, Greg Dickinson and Jim Westwell. Ron McCue set the mile mark at 4 minutes and 55 seconds, and the latter two shared honors for the 10.5 second record in the 100 yard dash. Tom Freeland set a precedent by tossing the shotput a record- breaking 41.5 feet. The constantly improving track team is looking forward to an even more successful season in 1964. 34 Record-Breaker Jim Westwell RECORD Tantasqua David Prouty Tantasqua North Brookfield Tantasqua Oxford Tantasqua Grafton Tantasqua Leicester Tantasqua Palmer Tantasqua Webster Academy Tantasqua Southbridge Steve Morr is displays winning form. BASEBALL °63 The Warriors, under 4-year veterans Art Cantara and Kevin Earls, swept through a fine season with an 8 and 6 record. They were behind in the first three games, but soon through the expert pitching of Dick Booth and Doug Gadaire along with the hitting of Kevin Earls, Joe Dmuchovsky, Ron Lippe and Dick Booth, they outscored their opponents for the next four games. The team finished off the season by winning 4 out of the 5 last games. Leicester High who edged us only by one point, won the league championship which we held for the past two years and will hold again! At the conclusion of the season, Peter Terry and Dick Booth were elected co-captains for 1964. Highlights: Dick Booth’s no-hit, no-run game over Charlton, the 3rd no hitter in Tantasqua history; also Booth’s 4 home runs, his biggest over the stands at Bartlett. John Brodeur’s grand-slam against Barre. Paul Kelly’s big home-run at Oxford. The determination of Joe Dmuchovsky. The power of Ron Lippe and Norman Howlett. The slick defensive play of Jim Kelly, Brad Savage, Lee Adams, and Don Looney. The fun of the annual alumni game and sock hop. And the first annual faculty game. The other two marks in win column were earned by turning back the Alumni and Faculty squads. The Victories can be attributed to an overall team effort combined with the sharpened defensive tactics of cap- tain Peter Terry and the accurate shooting of Juniors Ron Lippe and Jim Hyland. The team’s rebounding ability is also in much better shape. Although not a perfect season the record does give indi- cation of good things to come. It is a discus- INCOME sion place for student ideas and problems, is a major tie between the Administration and the student body, and provides services for the students. This year, we examined our Monitoring System and found that it was not worthwhile. We helped boost school spirit through the sale of season passes and the sponsoring of Color Night. A revised edition of the handbook was written to help new students. Through the year, services were provided through our concession stand, the buses to away games, and the Student Council Store.
