a ANTASQUAN TANTASQUA REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL STURBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTY THREE FOREWORD naa Where will we find the vanished years? Class of ‘60 Class of ‘6 Class of ‘62 We are the class of ’63 Hungry for solitude and silent places, Longing for company, discord and Unchained music when passion strikes us. We are a myriad of memories Rising to a close. Rage, shout madly to an uncaring sky, Clutch at the glass mountain of infinity, There is no mark visible to the Indifferent stranger... Yet there is something eternal about us. We are what has been and what will be. Look closely, touch us quickly, We cannot linger. We are scholars, each to ourselves. Walled by years... ? Never. Perpetuated in a hazy smile, A distracted look-memory is age- The word? “| have seen this and passed onward.” If we pass too swiftly, that is the wage Of existence. This book is a brake to time, We take it, remember life at Tantasqua And do not find ourselves surrounded By rustling memories As dried leaves, faded, yellow leaves Once green. CONTENTS NN Foreword Dedication BAGUIEY 2 me ke. The class of 1963 dedicates the yearbook to the individual most instrumental in molding our lives at Tantasqua and for all our remaining years — Miss Elizabeth G. Tite. FACULTY SUPERINTENDENT—PRINCIPAL HENRY J. PAPPAS The challenge to the communities has been met. The ground has been broken and work on the new addition has begun. We are looking forward to having this addition ready for occupancy on the opening day of school in September of 1963, enabling us to return to a normal, single session school day. Much time, effort, and expense on the part of the citizens of Holland, Wales, Brim- field, Brookfield, and Sturbridge has been expended to provide the best possible facility for the education of their young men and women. It is our duty as staff and student body to prove ourselves worthy of this effort. Let this, then, be our challenge. Let us as a staff and student body be aware of the responsibilities that are encompassed in accepting the faith and trust placed in our hands, Let us not divorce ourselves from the problems of the communities, for we too are the community. Let us all give maximum effort to make our program and our school the best. Let us give maximum effort to our development so that we can better face the problems of the future with which we will, all too soon, be confronted. Let us remember that the building is but a shell and that the components within shape the embryo. Henry A. Faugno STANDING: Coach Emrich, R. Booth, D. Looney, A. Cantara, K. Earls, J. Hyde, T. Johnson, G. Martell, F. LaBonte, J. Kelly, J. Kearns, Brodeur, P. Kelly. BASEBALL 61-62 lantasqua’s own, under Coach Emrich wrapped up their second consecutive league championship, and the fourth since 1956, by compiling a fine 10-4 record. Led by Capt. Greg Martel whose solid pitching and hitting has been an asset to T.R.H.S. for four years, the Warriors won seven of the first eight games and actually assured the championship in the early stages of the season. Un- defeated in league play, the Warriors rolled over such powerful foes as Leicester, North Brookfield, Douglas and Barre, the last being a grand no-hit, no-run_ per- formance by Terry Johnson. The Warrior’s key to success was a well rounded pitch- 84 ing staff of Martel, Johnson, and Booth, backed by a fine defensive infield of Hyde, Kelly and Cantara. Clutch hitting, a necessity at any time, was supplied by Juniors Earls and Looney, while the hustle and determination of LaBonte, Dmuchovsky, Kearns and Brodeur can not be discounted. Junior Varsity scored wins over Wachusetts, Minnechaug and Narragansetti, they plan an agressive ‘63 season. Highlight of the year was an overnight trip to the base- ball Hall of Fame at Coopertown, New York with a side trip to Howe Caverns. The 1962 Tantasqua track team, under the leadership of captains Guy Martel and Alan Pratt, posted a fine 4-3 record last Spring and thus continued to add stature to this growing sport. Paced in scoring by Arthur Scott who was undefeated in the mile run and Guy Martel whose 76 point total established a school record. The team won three of its last 4 meets; one of which was a smashing victory over arch-rival Millbury. The squad loses only a few men through graduation and therefore looks toward an even better season in 1963. Working with Coach Steensen will be Captains Tony DaDalt and Art Scott, and student coach, Guy Martel. These 4 men, who have eleven track experiences between them, should provide the incentive and inspiration needed for a winning team. The middle person is morale. CROSS-COUNT RY As in the past the Cross-Country team enjoyed another fine season and firmly established itself as one of the most successful of all Tantasqua’s athletic squads. Meeting defeat only at the hands of a powerful Narragansett Regional team, the boys breezed by Uxbridge, Minnechaug, Southbridge, Deerfield, and Woodstock as well as taking third place at the Wachusett Invitational meet, and making a fine showing at the Knights of Columbus race in Worcester. Next year’s captain Ronnie McCue should lead the team to an equally fine season. We are confident that underclassmen such as Rich Boucher, Jim Gilman, Neil Faugno, and Charlie Smith will more than make up for the loss of Paul Terry and relieve co- captains Tony DaDalt and Arthur Scott also lost through graduation. 90 Joe Dmuchovsky CROSS-COUNTRY 91 Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua TEAM RECORD 28 A . 42 1S 15 2] 28 39 18 48 50 36 Co-Captain Arthur Scott D. GOAL-POSTS Lead by the co-captains Bruce Adams and Greg Dickenson, the Tantasqua Football team enjoyed its best season since the establishment of the sport at Tantasqua. In the season’s opener, Tantasqua crushed Springfield Commerce, 20-6 behind the fine run- ning of Westwell, Dickenson, and Martin. This trio did most of the scoring throughout the year and were probably the best backfield combination in Tantasqua’s history. After losing to Millis on a rain-soaked field, the Warriors bounced back and easily defeated Minnechaug 28-6. Nashoba edged Tantasqua 15-14 by scoring in the final seconds on a much disputed play. The next three games saw Tantasqua beat West- boro and Leicester 14-6 and 40-8, respectively, and lose to Holliston in a penalty ridden game. Led by the defensive work of Don Looney, who intercepted two passes, Tantasqua managed to stall Plainfield’s passing and attack to emerge victoriously, 22-8. In the final game the Warriors lost to Palmer despite the fine defensive work of Dick Roscioli, who was voted lineman of the year. Next year, the tri-captains are Greg Dickenson, Jim Westwell and Mark Lepain. Due to very few losses through graduation, Tantasqua should enjoy a notably smashing season. 92 Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua Tantasqua TEAM RECORD 20 Springfield Commerce 0 Millis 28 Minnechaug 14 Nashoba 14 Westboro 40 Leicester 16 Holliston 22 Plainfield 6) Palmer FOOTBALL Coach Weiss explains a play. 6 93 Co-Capt. Although we didn’t win many games, the year was not lost, for the younger team- mates gained the experience which was lacking in the ‘62-’63 season. Next year, with the return of Jim Hyland, Pete Terry, Dick Roscioli, Ron Lippe, Ken Hedlund, and Bob Kochanowski (who all saw much action this year), the team should be greatly improved. 98 TEAM RECORD Tantasqua 42 St. Mary’s 49 Tantasqua 36 Southbridge 8] Tantasqua 24 Sutton 51 Tantasqua 40 Oxford 60 Tantasqua 42 Alumni 49 Tantasqua 39 N. STUDENT COUNCIL ARCHIVES ’63 With the burden of the organ debt no longer on our shoulders, the Student Council began this year to under- take a program whereby the students could immediately see and take part in the profit from our dances and the newly painted, thriving refreshment stand. Yet, with this there was a long range project which was equally important in the eyes of the body. At least two buses, run at a loss, sponsored by the Stu- dent Council, were run to every away football game. But the losses were negated by the enthusiastic crowds that came in droves to our three dances held in the first quarter year. Before the end of 1962, the junior high undertook, by it- self, for the first time in school history, a candy drive and netted itself a formidable $500. The most important single achievement was the installa- tion of a monitoring system and a student court at T.R.H.S. The monitors replaced teacher's discipline in the halls and cafeteria while the offenders were tried by the court. The punishment handed down by the court, if the offender was found guilty, had to be approved by the administration, but also had to be carried out by the defendant. With the profit from the candy and magazine drive a real student store will be built containing everything from “verb wheels” to gym suits, Tentative plans are now being made for a student recreation building which would be constructed from the profit from the store and candy and magazine drives. If, and there’s an excellent chance it will be, there’s a continuance of the cleverness and enthusiasm, the high- energy and perserverance that was shown by the mem- bers and the advisor, Mr. Toepfer, this year. I’m sure this dream will within the next seven years become a reality. Kevin Earls, President Left to Right ROW 1: Mr. Corson, B. Parker, A. MacArthur, J. lada- rola, C. Miller, M. Brandt, L.
