COACHING STAFF Led by captain Alan Hyde and fullback Fred La Bonte, both later selected for the Suburban All-Star League team, the ‘‘War- riors” ended the season with a 3 and 5 record. Crushing a powerful Springfield Commerce team 8 to 6 in the opener, the “Warriors” appeared well on their way to an undefeated season. In the two weeks that followed, however, Tantasqua bowed in defeat to Longmeadow 22 to 6 and to Pal- mer 22 to 8. The “Warriors” proved themselves in the rain and the mud of the South Hadley field. Fred La Bonte, the best full- back Tantasqua has ever seen, accounted for 150 yards and all the points making this 8 to 0 victory the highlight of the season. At East Longmeadow the “Lancers” unleashed a strong on- slaught, scoring a 12 to 6 upset, despite being kept from further gains in the second half. After easily overpowering Minnechaug 22 to 6, the rest of season found the “Warriors” fighting des- perately, but yielding to Enfield 49 to 6, and Ludlow 22 to 6. 66 Jim Westwell on an end run. Defensive team brings the op- ponent down. The line in action. Don Looney is hit aft er a fine play. Not since the exciting team of °56 and the powerhouse of 58 has such outstanding baseball been played here. Coaches Emrich and Bansfield feel that the key to success during the ’61 season was depth at every position, experienced players and a serious determination by all team members to learn, excel, and win.
