Scott ee SOLO Sean Sas nei is In the frontier life of one hundred years ago it was natural that physical prowess and bravery should have been held in high esteem. Today the frontier is intellectual, not physical. This thought was recent- ly expressed in a report by President Eisenhower. The scholar, the re- search worker, the scientist, and the teacher are the pioneers of today. Now, more than ever before in our history, we need young people with well-trained minds and ability to think. We need high quality leader- ship on the frontier of every field of human endeavor; in teaching and music, in art and in craft, in science and in economics. People who prize high quality education are essential to our nation’s progress, and even to its survival. I hope all of you are taking full advantage of the many opportuni- ties you have in school. Let me encourage each of you to grasp every opportunity to further your education and to prepare to meet the challenge of this twentieth century intellectual frontier. ROBERT E. Boos Class History The Class of 1960 is the first class to have completed the full six-year program at Tantasqua Regional High School. We, therefore, here submit a history of our class— the Class of 1960. The Tantasqua Regional School District was formed in 1952 to promote and to better the education of the children in the five towns of Brookfield, Brimfield, Holland, Stur- bridge, and Wales. The new school was officially opened on September 27, 1954. As the building was not yet completed, classes were held in temporary quarters in the towns of Brookfield, Brimfield, Sturbridge, and Holland. On December 4, 1954, the students from the five towns attended classes in the new building for the first time. It was on that day, December 4, 1954, that the Class of 1960 assembled. It was there, in the seventh grade, that many new and lasting friendships were formed with people from the several towns. As eighth graders, we presented Tantasqua with an American flag and stand te be used in the auditorium. Our freshman year brought us many new adventures. We elected class officers for the first time—Linda Parent, President; Eric Silverberg, Vice President; Sandra Wet- teland, Secretary; Angie Perrille, Treasurer. Time flew swiftly, and we soon were sophomores, led by new class officers—William Earls, President; Gloria Fay, Vice President; Karen Morrell, Secretary; Priscilla Gau- dreau, Treasurer. As juniors, we chose our class rings and sponsored our first formal prom. The prom, “Seventh Heaven,” was held on May 22, 1959. It was the most successful prom in the history of Tantasqua. Our class officers were Michael Sansoucy, President; Carolyn Wadsworth, Vice President; Nancy Thibeault, Secretary; Barbara LaMothe, Treasurer. Robert LePain was our senior class president, assisted by Michael Sansoucy, Vice President; Carrie LeBlanc, Secretary; Linda Lucier, Treasurer. We held our senior prom, “Whispers of Winter,” on November 20, 1959. We, the members of the Class of 1960, have greatly benefited from our educational and social experiences gained at Tantasqua. We have won many new and firm friends. We are proud of our school, and we consider it a great privilege to be the first class to be graduated from the complete six-year program of Tantasqua. Carolyn Wadsworth is leaving. For further information call Dickens 7-5261. Barbara Welsh leaves her seat in the Honor Society and her place in cheerleading to anyone who will accept the challenge. Kenneth Yates leaves his shoes to Mr. Kelly. Arthur Zierzow leaves his locker to the matron for a broom closet. 45 Senior Girls POPULAR Carrie LeBlanc ARTISTIC Barbara Deering PRACTICAL Carolyn Wadsworth Barbara Welsh ROMANTIC Judi Fish AGREEABLE Doris Berry ARGUMENTATIVE CHEERFUL Judv Henke Judi Fish ATTRACTIVE VERSATILE Judy Henke Barbara Welsh EFFICIENT STUDIOUS Faye Silverberg Martha Roberts BASHFUL LITERARY Martha Roberts Carole Bennet DARING TALKATIVE Val Sawyer Val Sawyer TALENTED WITTIEST Lisby Upton Karen DeAngelis FORGETFUL MUSICAL Barbara LaMothe Karen Morrell NAIVE QUIET Barbara Bashaw Martha Roberts SOPHISTICATED GROOMED Deborah Favreau Deborah Favreau DEPENDABLE DANCER Susan Gould | Nancy Thibeault ATHLETIC Pat Poirier AMBITIOUS Mary McLaughlin CLASS GENIUS Lorella Jones LEADERSHIP Val Sawyer MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Lorella Jones DONE MOST FOR THE CLASS Barbara Deering Faye Silverberg Val Sawyer Boys POPULAR Bob LePain ARTISTIC Ken Tuomi PRACTICAL Eric Silverberg ROMANTIC Buddy Morgan AGREEABLE Bob Lazure CHEERFUL ARGUMENTATIVE Kenny Menard Andy Bourbeau VERSATILE ATTRACTIVE Eric Silverberg Kenny Menard STUDIOUS EFFICIENT Tom Kozloski Bill Laughlin LITERARY BASHFUL Bill Earls George LeBlanc TALKATIVE DARING John Gregory Bob Headley WITTIEST TALENTED Bill Earls Dennis Ploof MUSICAL FORGETFUL Dennis Ploof Tim Munier QUIET NAIVE George LeBlanc Dave Cargill GROOMED SOPHISTICATED Bill Laughlin Art Zierzow DANCER DEPENDABLE Phil Grant Eric Silverberg Dennis Ploof Bob Lazure (= Ernie Vezina ATHLETIC Louie Hyde AMBITIOUS Superlatives Eric Silverberg CLASS GENIUS Tom Kozloski LEADERSHIP Mike Sansoucy MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Eric Silverberg DONE MOST FOR THE CLASS Mike Sansoucy Class Prophecy The class of 60’s gone beat Just in time for our fifth reunion we meet Pris Mathieu, George Herbert, Marlene Frederick, Judy Taylor, Nancy Donais, Ed Killian and Dave Cargill who have FINALLY achieved their highest aim CLAP they graduated. Al Pratt and Faith Byron have got their cars ZOOM to work (they took them to the Blake Brothers’ Garage) FREE COMMERCIALS BANNED Last seen Al and Faith were dragging with Paul Shailer around the new wide Tantasqua track ROAR Following them were two streaks of blue “fuzz,” Donald Picard and Roland Pierce SCREETCH There is on the roster of the Olympics A scroll naming Tantasqua entrants. Here such sports greats as Lazure, Yates, Jolin, Mundell, and Tryba Are carried off the field, exhausted, While Pat Poirier and Kay Powers Run circles around the stretcher bearers. While Rog Felton whips love juice from his still, in their cool studio Doug Platt and Ken Gaucher are surrounded by Jim Cormier’s models . . . models . . . models. Books rivalling those by Peale and Sheen are being written by SCRATCH happy and successful Shirley Isham, Phil Grant and Donnie Martin. Buddy Morgan and Ken Caldbeck, missionaries, have just returned from Palestine, where they tried, in vain, to convert the CAMELS. Scientists are marvelling at the sudden growth of Ken Menard and Faye Silverberg. They have reached their desired heights of 5°6” and are still growing. Now their highest aim 1s to stop. Louis Hyde and Andre Bourbeau simultaneously —CRASH— announce—BOOM—to the radio audience that Bev Clancy has shot BANG a hole in Mike Sansoucy’s football. Deb Favreau proudly holds hands like with Art Zierzow while he writes a novel celebrating her CONTROVERSIAL picture on the cover of MAD An ear-splitting CRASH BOOM BANG RING issues from the secret top-top secret lab where Peck, Showman, Laughlin, Kenyon, Muller, Silverberg, Kozlowski and Jones have just announced the utter FAILURE of their latest BOOM experiment. Donald Boos expects BANG repercussions in the animal kingdom. Congressional investigators have decided that Tim Munier’s claims are unfounded—his company has been attributing Ken’s growth to his MUNCH eating of their crackless crackers. Leaving John Terry behind in a cloud of dust, Bob Faugno and Barb Welsh drag off. In this race to buy the most expensive polishes for his beautiful cars, John has been forced to sell the motors. Ken Tuomi in his almost Ford waves goodbye as he leaves Sturbridge for the wilds of Brimfield. In the relocated beatnik camp of Sturbridge Village we find Carole Bennett. It was one of the few places where she could be a bachelor’s wife. We find there also Wadsy and J. Fish reading the poetry of those out-out beats Earls and Headley Also at the Village is Joanne Charpentier who keeps yelling “Tex” to the bongo quartet directed by Dennis Ploof Dancing to the beat is Sandy, the Chipmunk, Hall. Meanwhile back at the spaceport Ginny Bergeron assures her moon-bound passengers, Daphne Morse and Ricky Lamonda, of “It’s Only a Paper Moon” to reach Khruschev’s that there is enough atmosphere there for Ricky’s rendition ear. In Russia are Donna MacGrath, her ambassador husband and their family. Perplexed by the problem of explaining Santa Claus to the eight little ones, whose pad does not contain a chimney, is Jeannette Robichaud, their beat chick tutor. Visiting them at the embassy is Karen Morrell who has finished seeing the fifty states and is now touring the world. SUPPOSE SHE’S LOOKING FOR A HUSBAND? Rach Davieu’s pad is still covered with fleas and dogs. Any suggestions ? Babs Deering still wants to be CENSORED oops, that’s as far as we gO... But Karen DeAngelis has given up her highest aim and is Looking for a lowest one. She has to look? In one of the leading business firms we find Carole Bruso and Rose Paquette as secretaries, while Martha Ladyka sits on the head accountant’s lap. Rumor has it he’s from Wells—SHUSH On the way up ZOOM Edna Grimes’ rocket ship piloted by Dick Strack passes Carry Leblanc’s jet and Donna Loux’s ultra-private hospital for broken asteroids where we find Martha Roberts and Linda Parent caring for Judy Henke, Sally Hyland and Jimmy Jackson, who are resting quietly. In Rena Martin’s beauty parlor BUZZ BUZZ we find Doris Berry who constantly tries to brush chalk dust off her sleeve. She insists the cause of this nervous tic is the fact that she had an eraser thrown at her as a student. With the invention of cigarettes that taste like chocolate, Pris Gaudreau is happy—now she just looks like a stove. From the appearance standpoint John Gregory looks happy and healthy at 99—scientists do make mistakes, you know. Talking excitedly to Marge Thurlow who just fans herself with her diploma we find Barbara Bashaw. She babysat for her idol last night—RICKY NELSON. 49 50 The beat, beat rhythm of the bongos brings us back to earth where it coincides with the beat, beat of the hairbrushes administered to their children by Ann Blondin, Sally Palmer, Judy Martin, Pat Herrington, Nancy Thibeault, Margeurite Craig, and NATCH Ernie Vezina. Ronnie Brodeur h as reached the peak of his career he has finished drafting an especially wide section of road designed specifically for Val Sawyer to practice making UEEEEE’S ... CRASH!!! At the insistence of his children, Barry Smith finally installed an elevator in the chimney of his one-story house to save wear and tear on Santa Claus. Barb Lamothe and Linda Lucier are BIFF BANG CRASH arguing over the morals of love, life and nose-rubbing. Meanwhile at Bob LePain’s new housing project we find Roger Casavant pounding crooked nails with Gert Hoy stridently HEY supervising the whole job. Albie Booth cooks for Mary McLaughlin somewhere out in space where she has written a two page novel entitled “A Year’s Thoughts.” In the depths of the vaults the soft SQUISH-SH-SH of greenbacks indicates that Lyle Plainte, George LeBlanc, Marilyn Lynch, and Ron Mahan are slaving away over their Million dollar income-tax forms. The investment''—as Franklin puts it—that you are now making in knowledge will go far to insure your success in later life. And further, the dividends that you will receive later will be proportional to the degree of mastery which you attain in your studies. American Optical Company is also currently making a large investment in knowledge to insure its future. Our new Research Center, staffed by learned scientists and tech- nicians in the fields of optics, stands as a fine example. It is our belief that these people, working for the Company to improve the vision of human beings the world over, will be paying dividends for many, many years to come.
