v fy, 1 '4 Massachusetts' own native son, Horace Mann, educator of world renown, in T840 asked the following question: Are the young people in our schools being educated in reference to themselves and their private interests only, or with regard to the great social duties and responsibilities that they will take on in adult life? More than a hundred years later, people are still asking the same question. The answer is that it should be neither all one nor all the other but a combination of the two. The pur- pose of education is to help you personally to live a satisfying and happy life of your own, but it is also iust as much its purpose to help you to mature in your responsi- bility for cooperative, understanding citizenship, and to realize our absolute de- pendence upon each other.
