However, outside time must be spent in gathering information and material. With Mrs. MacDonald's untiring efforts, the staff was successful in meeting the deadlines for the four issues of the paper. TAHIAN STAFF From lkcember to Nhrch the whole student body in lf H. S. was made Tahian con- scious at various times. For several days Seniors, underclassmen, and teachers dressed up for portraits and group pictures. There were also drives for advertisements, boost- ers, and subscriptions. But behind the scenes other tasks such as copy reading, sort- ing pictures, comparing ideas, typing, writing, and rewriting were slowly and laboriously going on. ...AND THE PRESSES ROLLED STUDENT COUNCIL To create leadership, to induce co-operation between students and faculty, and to improve the school generally, the Student Council meets every Thursday. Having joined the Central Regional Division of Student Councils last year, this year we joined the Maryland Association of Student Councils. One project which is very beneficial to the school is the sale of T. H. S. note- books. Setting up a court was a big step in developing the efficacy of the organization. PATROLMEN T. H. S. bus drivers are assisted by certain students selected to maintain safety at all times. The efficiency of these patrolmen is largely responsible for the low acci- dent rate. 'Ihey are rewarded by the satisfaction they gain from serving their school and the respect they receive from those associated with them. Nt ORCHESTRA Under the new direction of Mr. Kersey, the orchestra offers pleasure and cultural opportunities for those interested in instrumental music. Also, it has been possible for every student in school to enjoy music rendered by this group from time to time. Several of the members have attended Carroll County Orchestra and the All-Maryland High School Orchestra. MIXED CHORUS One of the most active musical groups in the school is the mixed chorus composed of music-lovers from the tenth, eleventh, and the twelfth grades. The chorus participates in P. T. A. programs, student assemblies and community functions. The goal of each member is to join along with the other Carroll County schools in the annual Eisteddfod. There is hardly a day when the chorus is not preparing to present some entertainment for a special event. QNW WW, ...A mf .W if Q' vi? .L 4 if is 3 a QW x? O16 of the Seniors' greatest treasures will be the memory of the many happy phys- ical education periods that we shared: the volleyball games, basketball games, and a- bove all, the race to the shower rooms afterwards to get the hot water, if there was any. Below, the Seniors indulge in a fast-moving game of volleyball, one of the rea- sons why we Come to school on Monday and Friday. ,Ml-we 'Mm Aw BOYS' JAYVEE TEAM First Row: D. Wilson F. Bachman D. Coach Ecker's team collides with opposing teams in the Carroll County Circuit taking six wins against six defeats. The first game, played in Union Bridge against the Wolverines, began with the Tigers out-scoring the Wolves 2 to 1 in the first frame. The 'Cinderella Team' halted the Tigers vicious attack in the first frame by using a more efficient defense and rallying to whip the Tigers 48 to 34. The Tigers moved to a more favorable standing in the league by nosing out their next two oppo- nents: Mt. Airy 45-29, and Hampstead 42-40. CarroU.County's Champs, the skeletoned Sykes- villers, again showed their power by wiping T.H. S. 63-28. With their spirits low, the team was edged 46-24 h1their next game against the second team of the county - New Windsor. Back with a spurt of energy - and the Man- chester Yellow-Jackets felt the Tigers' claws as our boys tallied up a 57-48 win. The Wolverines went home with the next game, score U.B. 52 - T. H. S. 39. The next two games were both exciting and dramatic as Taneytown edged Mt. Airy 38-32, and Hampstead fell 46-45. Back came the County Champs with a 63-32 win over the Tigers and New Windsors's win of 63-41. Finally the season wound up in a very close game with T. H. S. vs. Manchester. Final score: T. H. S. 48 - M. H. S. 40. Our new coach, Charlie Ecker, hailing from W. M. C. worked hard to promote cooperation, team- play, and solid sportsmanship among his pace setting cagers. Coach Ecker has done well in producing a fourth place team with only two first-string veterans. Congratulations Tigers!!! You played a good game all the way. T. H. S. girls' speedball team had a successful year under the direction of their new coach, Miss Peggy Brown. 'Ihe girls who were energetic enough to meet the requirements of the team were as follows: Captain, Arlene Fair, Dot- ty Morelock, JoAnn Koons, Wanda Mehring, Lois Clingan, Diane Thomas, Dottie Hartsock, Nancy Pennington, Betty Miller, JuliaHumbert, Ruth Ridinger, Shirley Koons, Pat Wantz, Joan Miller, and Jean Wilson. Jean Wantz acted as manager and scorekeeper. Three veterans with three years of experience h Agyyyt , Q are: Arlene Fair, Diane 'Ihomas, and Dotty Morelock. 34,77 K 1 The team also has two members with two years ex- K U ' perienceg Wanda Mehring and JoAnn Koons. . 1. - jr Q. .. .sd f s W 'Ihe team is appreciative and thankful to Miss Peggy Brown who donated most of her time and energy to the welfare of the basketball team. Coach Brown also promoted school spirit and furthered co-opera- 3' 5 tion among the students of T. H. S. w-may ,W Front Row - Julia Humbert Diane Thomas Arlene Fair Ruth Hidinger BASKETBALL VARSITY There was much interest shown in basketball this year ap- parent in the large turnout in each afternoon practice. In a sport that requires much co-operation among many girls for the success of the game, we have to give special thanks to Coach Peggy Brown, who has so patiently and willingly given bas- ketball the touch needed to keep it one of today's most popular indoor sports for girls. Back Row -- Doris Ingram Vivian Davidson Alice Frock Peggy Brown 32 JUNIOR VARS ITY Members of the team from left to right are: J0an Miller, JoAnn Koons, Lois Fair, Mildred Bowling, Dorothy Foglesong, Wanda Mehring, Captain, Shirley Forsythe, Pat Wantz, Janet For- sythe, Shirley Koons, Dotty Morelock. Jean Wantz and Doris In- gram were manager and scorekeeper respectively. Arlene Fair - The Tigerettes are going to miss Captain Ar- lene Fair next year. When she executes a hook shot, it's bound to count. Ar- lene was top scorer of the team and was highly regarded by team-mates and op- ponents alike. JoAnn Koons- Although she plays Diane Thomas - Rah! Rah! Rah! Look at that score! It's Diane Thomas On the basketball floor. Diane has been a star forward of the basketball team for the past four years, as well as an out- standing athlete in other fields of sports. Wanda Mehring- One of the Tiger- ettes taller players is Wanda Mehring. She is a star in her own field, especially with those two-hand- ed, over head shots. Her ability and good sportsmanship deserve much credit. Time IH with the whistle on the Junior Varsi- ty team, the Varsity would be at a disad- vantage without her help and co-opera- tion. She is a most efficient guard and can easily handle any forward. Dotty Morelock- Dotty is another of our able players who spends the major part of her spare time participating in sports. With speed and ability, Dotty remains a fine asset to the Tigerettes. The team certainly will regret the loss of this forward. Foul shot ...... Hold your breath Conflict .... .
