This is the year in which we must de- cide whether we want to live in peace with the world or whether we want to be engaged in another world conflict which might lbe fatal to civilization. All of us will have a chance to sound our opinion and to do something about this problem. Our school life should have helped us to learn to think correctly and systematically. In this Tahian we want to show to others what t-he school has done and what we have done to make our years in high school good ones. We also want our sister classes to try to glean some bit of goodness from our class to help them in their high school career. Shc's quiet, all right, the quietest girl in the class. Mfany suspect that her thoughts are elsewhere- perhaps on the work at home on the farm, or on the farm that will some day be her own. 'There is nothing forward or imposing' about Esther. But even a stranger can sense that she would nc an as- set to any group. Her smile is a quick response to anyone 'ivlio calls upon her for assistance. And she is capable, too, though quietly so. ..i-.a. .. DOROTHY ANNE ALEXANDER Dot. Dorothy Alexander Just call her Dot, With her brains and personality Will hit the top. Dot's the girl, who, if she were multiplied by the number in the class, would make a teaicher's life a cinch. Dot's report card has always been mono- tonously marked with A's. But there's nothing monotonous about Dot. For all her brains, she's not pedantic. 'She merits A's in social life, athle- tics, dramatics, and in any other activity she takes part in. For this reason she is well liked by the students, too. Dot will enter Western Maryland College next year. ,.-,a,,.,.. ANGELA MAE BAKER Mae. Hear Ye! Here Ye! lf you get sick, Call on Mae Baker Sihe'll make you tick. Tall, blonde 'Mae is a friend to everyone and ready to help others always in a persuiasive way charac- teristic of her. 'One of the conscientious members of the basketball team, she has also shown her sing- ing' ability as One of the members of the svchoci singing trio. Mae takes care of the library several free periods a week, and she has proven to be a cap- able librarian. But her heart is set on a nursing career, and she plans to study toward that end after graduation. .GIAHIAN A RLENE VIRGINIA ULABAUGH Dill, Cute and chummy Althou-gh quiite small, A pal to everyone, That's Arlene Clabaugln. Short, but sweet---that's Dill. Although she is the youngest and the smallest member of the class, her age and stature do not hinder her in what she attempts to do. Srhe went out for athletics this year and made the position of guard on the 'basket- ball team. As one of the typists for the school pa- per, Dill proved her worth as a commercial stu- dent. At present, however, Dill's chief interest is in roller-skating and her skating partner. .1..a.11. CECELIA LaRUE FAIR Celia. The all-around gal Is 'Celia Fair She'1l get some place With her red hair. Celia, with her red hair and sense of humor is one of the all-around girls of the class. To a certain ex- tent she disproves the statement that a quick temper goes with red hair. Neat but not prim, Celia is well-liked. She has artistic abilities too. To her goes the credit for the original designs and artwork of this yearbook. Celia is planning on a nursing career and, beyond a doubt, she will cer- tainly be a success. ........u . JAMES HENRY FAIR Jimmy, Jimmy Fair, fun And all his wit, With teachers and students, Will always make a hit. Unpredictable, funloving, Jimmy, the general prankster of the Senior class, is usually seen teas- ing the teachers. He gets along unusually well with the opposite sex and will be remembered for leading many of the activities in school. He can be serious when necessary, especially in science, which is his favorite subject. Whether Jim chooses to go on in his study of sciences or to lbe a clerk in a store is a present undecided question. GIAHHIAN.-. MAXINE ELIZABETH FREAM sxXMa!X.va I Maxine Fream W'ho'll become a nurse, And when you're sick She'l1 be 'there first. Max is the excitable member of the class. Al- though she is uisually laughing, she does have a quick temper. Max daydreams a lot, 'but she is a hard worker both in and out of school. Her collec- tion of pictures of her admirers is a Senior class curio. T'he basketball team was aided by her effec- tive method of guarding. lM1ax hopes to become a nurse after graduation and she'll certainly make a pretty one. i..,3i1. AUDREY ARLENE FROCK Audrey, Black, curly hair And a crinkly smile, To see Miss Frock Fair would walk a mile. It's always Fair weather when Audrey and the hepcats .get together, for she is a jitterbug, and a good one at that. lBesides dancing, she is an expert at bowling, basketball, and softball. iShe is one of our outstanding athletes. Her friendly manner and smile have helped her to become very popular even though she joined the class just this year. -T--al. . - CLARIENCE +EDWAR1D HAINES Reds For Eddie Haines There is in store, 'A business career Who could ask for more? Reds has just what the name implies-curly red hair and a temper that matches. As a commercial student, he is always seen with the girls in the typ- ing room. His hearty laugh is heard from one room to the other. Eddie represents the Senior class on the basketlbiall team and on the student council. All signs in the recent past seem to point toward a position in the 'business world for Eddie. r WAHHAN JOSEPHIN-E DELORES HESS 66J0.u Josephine Hess Is one of the best, She'll allways study When it comes to a test. Neat, industrious Jo is usually talking and tell- ing jckes. Her infectious giggle sets the rest of the girls into accompanying gales of laughter. E l , GIAHIAN CLASS IN REVIE ln 1942, we ente.ed high school as Fresihmen, green as the grass of spring. The class was so big that it had to be divided between 'Mr. 'Earhart and Mr. Bready. 1942-43 was a year of many parties and substitute teachers. Having so many timid student teachers made things quite exciting. A few paper airplanes Hew about the room that year. It never happened again. The class officers for the year were as follows: President, 'George Sauble, Vice- President, Cordelia Mackley, Secretary, Mary Louise Roop, and Treasurer, Gloria Simpson. Returning from a happy vacation, we soon settled down for another successful year under the presi- dency of James Henry Fair. Dolores Waddell was Vice-Presidentg Josephine Hess, Secretary and Cor- delia Mackley, Treasurer. Practically all of the members of the class participated in the newly formed clubs--Dancing, Hiking, and Home Etc. This was the year in which we presented our play version of the classic, Silas Marner. Everyone liked the show, 'b-ut it was a lot of work. A new member joined us that year, Mildred Ingram. Under the Future Farmers of America project which was car- ried on by Mr. Bfiser, several of the boys won state wide contests. In the third year we were governed by President, Bernard Weber, George Sauible who acted as his as- sistant, Josephine Hess, Secretary and Mildred In- gram, Treasurer. We soon noticed the absence of many of our classmates who had left to take jobs because of the war. We again raised chickens to pay for our banquet. The main attractions for the latter half of the year were the glee cluib party and the Junior Senior baniquet. The Banquet was held in Richard McAllister Hotel, in Hanover, Pennsyl- vania, with Harry Marsh's Orchestra furnishing the dance music. We will always remember this Junior- Senior Banquet as one of the most enjoyable events of our high school career. Tilzvl. ln the Fall of 1945, as Seniors, we noticed that several members of the class had left us. Bernard Weber moved b-ack to Illinois and Kenneth Hull join- de the Navy. Two new members joined us: Audrey Frock from Elmer Wolfe High School and Mildred Roop from Westminster. Brut of the original 50, only 25 remained. Miss Gilda Tulli was our new class advisor. 'On the twentieth of November, the operetta Norwegian Nights was presented by the school and Mrs. Yingling with all Seniors partici- pating. Sports played a big part in our Senior year. Eight Senior girls played on the basketball team. Several Senior boys participated in the basketball season. The first athletic meet of our high school career was held this year. We made a good show- ing at the meet. The Senior play, Almost Eighteen which was presented on April 11, was a huge success. As most people like to dance, we enjoyed the dances which were held during the year. We will especially re- member the Spring Formal which was held after the Spring Musical. The Senior Class participated in the Elisteddfod on April 26th at Western Maryland College. This was the tirst Eisteddfod held since we had been in high school. Our class night pre- gram and dance were greatly enjoyed by everyone. We were graduated from T. H. S. on June 6th. This event ended our activities at Taneytown High 19 GIAHIAN . - , Anchored to the School Study Hall Freshmen Antics Make It Good! R r GITAHIAN WHO'S WHO I 1956 I had the prophecy on my mind last night And I had jumbled dream, I saw my classmates-all of them- How crazy their lives did seem. lt started off with Georgie Sauble coming down the road in his new Olds --the sixth one. In the car were Mary Louise Roop and her husband. lMary Louise stopped to tell me she was taking her young- est boy, Beau, Jr. to the doctor. Do you know who the doctor was? Richard RinehartQthat was funny because we thought Richard would be a pro- fessor. As I hurried across the street I remembered I wanted sugar so I went into the nearest grocery store, I was surprised to find out that it was called Jim's Grocery, and that James Fair was the proprietor. In the store I met Eisther Albaugh and Frances Houck who were buying groceries for their families. We gossiped for two hours. Esther told me that Dorothy Alexander had married after teach- ing school for six yea s. Six kept popping up all the time----you know how dreams are. Francis Houck had six boys. James was 'bfutting in every few minutes and I learned that Mildred Ingram has be- come a grade teacher at Taneytcfwn School and has the privilege of teaching Gloria Sim,pson's twins. The twins presented Miss Ingram with a dozen eggs for Christmas. On going out of the store I met Edward Sell get- ting out of his bread truck with an arm load of bread. Behind him came Paul Slaybaugh with his dairy products. As I wandered down the street I saw 'Maude My- ers, dressed in her nurses' uniform, rushing into the apartment above the' bowling alley. There, I later found out, Maxine Fream lived, and Bill, Jr. had just swallowed a marble. I kept on walking until I came to a huge business building where Edward Haines was the chief executive and his stenograph- ers were 'busily typing. I identified them as Arlene Clabaugh, Aileen lMyers, lClordelia Mackley and Josephine Hess. I chatted to the girls for awhile and Arlene told me Cordelia was still tormenting Slim by not saying yes. She also told me that Mae Baker was going on in her medical studies, and would probably be a doctor in a few more years. I walked down the street then until I came to a shady avenue and in front of one of the houses I saw Kenneth Rittase in a hammock resting. When I asked him what he had been doing during the ten years since we had left high school, he drawled: Resting Down the street further, I walked into a church and then my dream became hazy. But I am sure I heard George SaLr':'le crooning, I love you truly while Audrey Frock patiently waited for James Fair to find the wedding ring. As I passed the radio studio they were starring the 101 ranch boys with Mildred Roop as their singer. Still furth- er down the street, I happened to glance in the win- dow of a business building and, to my amazement, I saw Betty Linton typing and humming a popular tune at the same time. I was coming to the end of the town and I stop- pefl to admire the beautiful home I saw with a large garage at the side. There I saw Dolores Waddell and her husband ambling about their fiower garden after a hard day's work in the business world. I was becoming tired and had just seated myself by the side of the road, when all of a sudden, I beard the roaring of a well-used car. I knew with- out looking that it was a Hudson and that behind the wheel was sitting Cecelia Fair, dressed in mink and diamonds. She asked me if I wanted a lift and we drove away together recapturing the memories cf our high school days. 23 BDL0WGwgQw?i,,0MAKMv.ii,Y Qcmehq 'QL EE 75 QQ AQ, Cl my 3 M if QV ,ja ' . During our Sophomore year this same program was carried on. It was not until our Junior year that we were playing basketball. A few of us were placed as substitutes on the team. We liked this be- cause even if we didn't always get to play, we got. to go along' to the games with other schools. The Senior year is the big time for girls in ibask- etball. Almost every senior girl was on the team or acted as a substitute. The Seniors who played were: Dolores Waddell, Mildred Ingram, Aileen Myers, Maude Myers, Dorothy Alexander, Mae Baker, Gloria Simpson Maxine Fream, and Arlene iCla- baugh. The team also included some Juniors: Betty Lou Royer, Doris Koons, Pearl Bollinger and Julia Glass 51' AHIAN BOYS' BASKETBALL Athletics has played an important part in the school life of the Senior boys. During the Freshman year, great stress was plac- ed upon building strong bodies. 'A tough obstacle course was set up on the school ground and the boys took their daily endurance tests with their chins up although they were someiimes bruised by the time they were finished. Streuuous exercises were also given under the direction of Mr. Biser. Other sports were added to the boys' athletic sche- duie in the Sophomore year. Several of the boys, Flash Rittase, George Sauble, Eddie Haines tried out the basketball team and got to play frequently as substitutes. Some football, soccer, and softball were also played. A special athletic instructor, Rev. Lundberg, coached the boys' sports during the Junior year. Again strenuous exercises were taken and imore football and soccer were played. As Juniors, more interest was taken in basketball. Flash Rittase was a regular, important part of the team. In the Spring softball was played the boys did have a good team. This year, the Senior year, more emphasis was placed on basketball. Flash Rittase was Captain of the team and Eddie Haines proved to be a capable guard. The team, which was coached by Mr. Donald Tracey, did not have the breaks with them when they played, but it can be said that they played a good, clean game. On April 20th a county-wide basket- Joall tournament was held at Western Maryland Col- lege. Our boys played one of the best games there, although they lost to Elmer Wolfe by a score of 33- 28. The first athletic meet held in five years was held this year. Our boys participated in races, jump- ing, and softball. They played well for the school and showed the real thing to be gained from athle- tics-sportsmanship. i 35 GIAIMIAN . , .,,.,,, , , , l Name Esther Albauglfi D01-othy Alexander Mae Baker Arlaene Claybaugh Cecelia Fair James Fair Maxine Fream Audrey Frock Edward Haines Josephine Hess Frances Houck Mildred Ingram Betty Linton Cordelia Mackley Aileen Myers Maude Myers Richard Rinehart Kenneth Rittase Mary L.
