Have you ever wondered where people hang out at Tam? There are many different places, but only five were popular: the front parking lot, side steps, Mead Theatre, senior bench, and the back parking lot. The front parking lot includes the front lawn, the faculty parking lot, and the boy's gym. It is the most populated area at Tam. One of the front lotters described it as where the mellow partiers are, but they have their act together. She said, They're rowdy, but decent people. No vandalism or goes on out there. They are the rock and rollers of Tam High. Generally they are good students. The side steps is a very private place at Tam. The trees hide everything that goes on there. It is a designated smoking area, so many who populate it smoke. One front lotter said, Sometimes one of the front lotters goes over there to have a cigarette, but we usually do not hang out there. The majority of people in Mead Theater this year were also front-lotters having a cigarette. It was also a popular area for hacky-sack and idle sunning. Senior bench, on the other hand, was full of A and B students, many of them preppies. The majority of senior bench do not cut and are very protective of their bench. The back parking lot is behind the well-known student center. It was where all the students were to park their cars, but some of the students were afraid to do so, because of the questionable reputation of the back parking lot. The back lot was made up of greaser guys and their hot rod cars or cowboys and their trucks. You could say the back lot was still back in the fifties, with students cruising the drag and having fun. In between the fun there was still time for work, though. Many of the back lotters had high GPA's and were planning on college. The majority worked before they played.

The Political Scene Despite the exceptional popularity of the famous Tam sports departments, dances, and . . . weekendm partying, Tam students this year have become more involved in less popular though more important preoccupations, namely politics. The surge isn't enormous, but it is serious. Tam students, liberal by majority, have became more aware of politics, politicians, and government than likely thought. In the quest for political activity some Tam students went so far as to actively involve themselves in nuclear disarmament, human rights violations, and even Reagonomics. The latest movement to hit the streets, were the Freeze the Arms Race buttons that Tony Medrano's group hocks for a dollar. Kinda steep for a button, but it's for the cause we heard one student say. The Tam nuclear package also included a terrifying 12-panel display of the Effects of Nuclear War in the mezzanine of the student center and a almost school-wide showing of The Last Epidemic , a very heavy film which Tam was the first high school in the county to view. Besides nuclear awareness, students in Mr. Beldens constitution classes performed mock senate hearings at the Mill Valley City Hall. Clad in three-piece suits, business dresses, and sneakers, these students spent a day reenacting the exact procedures of a senate 'hearing and the passing of bills. With the political trend among Tam high students would it not seem likely that other high schools are catching on? If this trend were to spread, high school could become an effective part of important government functions and decisions.
