On January 4, 1982, Tamalpais High School saw a storm flood the likes of which it had never seen before. Miller Avenue became the floor of a raging river tall enough to swallow five cars and to turn the teacher's parking lot into a cold, muddy swimming pool. The warning of the white water came late to the student body that fateful day, for the school administration wanted to keep school in session until the end of fourth period classes, that way they got credit for a full school day. By the time students were able to organize themselves they were trapped by the flood. The only way to escape was to wade through the icy depths of the water or to find a car that was not yet rendered immobile. Yips and crys of happiness as well as the recitation of profanity danced in the air. Not too many people agreed on the merit of the flood, but everyone definitely had a strong opinion about it. Much of the day was spent arranging rides home for many students. School was closed altogether the next day, a holiday ,,,that was eventually made up on the last day of the SEI'1'19StE?I'. Tam students who depended on the system for transport were forced to home because the flood shut down most road use in Marin. If home was too far to walk, phone calls had to be made or sleeping arrangement set. more rugged type person found the flood to be fun and exciting, many had water fights or rowed boats down Miller Avenue. Others found the whole affair irritating, they only saw it as a walk home in wet clothes or a wasted day at school. Even though the flood drew mixed reviews it will remain in the memories of many people as a special time during their high school days. 'cf' we ,..,-f Nev .df-
