Miller Avenue became the floor of a raging river tall enough to swallow five cars and to turn the teacher's parking lot into a cold, muddy swimming pool. The warning of the white water came late to the student body that fateful day, for the school administration wanted to keep school in session until the end of fourth period classes, that way they got credit for a full school day. By the time students were able to organize themselves they were trapped by the flood. The only way to escape was to wade through the icy depths of the water or to find a car that was not yet rendered immobile. Yips and crys of happiness as well as the recitation of profanity danced in the air. Not too many people agreed on the merit of the flood, but everyone definitely had a strong opinion about it. Much of the day was spent arranging rides home for many students. School was closed altogether the next day, a holiday ,,,that was eventually made up on the last day of the SEI'1'19StE?I'. Tam students who depended on the system for transport were forced to home because the flood shut down most road use in Marin. If home was too far to walk, phone calls had to be made or sleeping arrangement set. more rugged type person found the flood to be fun and exciting, many had water fights or rowed boats down Miller Avenue. Others found the whole affair irritating, they only saw it as a walk home in wet clothes or a wasted day at school. Even though the flood drew mixed reviews it will remain in the memories of many people as a special time during their high school days. You and your friends are getting rowdy. There's so much to look forward to: the band at lunch, the game after school, the party at night, and being able to sleep in. At last the freedom of the weekend is about to happen. In every class the students are noisy and excited. No one pays attention to the teacher and everyone shouts and laughs. Some students cut class, some just leave early. Everyone anticipates the last bell. And when it finally rings, it's never loud enough. But it's the relief we've all waited for for five long days. Thank God it's Friday! X gl 2 AA Z f f I, X ' v A -Tag!! MWT- f M-mf THANK GOO VVS PRXDAXU l 19 Hangin' Gut At Tam High iXKi'a Have you ever wondered where people hang out at Tam? There are many different places, but only five were popular: the front parking lot, side steps, Mead Theatre, senior bench, and the back parking lot. The front parking lot includes the front lawn, the faculty parking lot, and the boy's gym. It is the most populated area at Tam. One of the front lotters described it as where the mellow partiers are, but they have their act together. She said, They're rowdy, but decent people. No vandalism or goes on out there. They are the rock and rollers of Tam High. Generally they are good students. The side steps is a very private place at Tam. The trees hide everything that goes on there. It is a designated smoking area, so many who populate it smoke. One front lotter said, Sometimes one of the front lotters goes over there to have a cigarette, but we usually do not hang out there. The majority of people in Mead Theater this year were also front-lotters having a cigarette. It was also a popular area for hacky-sack and idle sunning. Senior bench, on the other hand, was full of A and B students, many of them preppies. The majority of senior bench do not cut and are very protective of their bench. The back parking lot is behind the well-known student center. It was where all the students were to park their cars, but some of the students were afraid to do so, because of the questionable reputation of the back parking lot. The back lot was made up of greaser guys and their hot rod cars or cowboys and their trucks. You could say the back lot was still back in the fifties, with students cruising the drag and having fun. In between the fun there was still time for work, though. Many of the back lotters had high GPA's and were planning on college. The majority worked before they played. The Political Scene Despite the exceptional popularity of the famous Tam sports departments, dances, and . . . weekendm partying, Tam students this year have become more involved in less popular though more important preoccupations, namely politics. The surge isn't enormous, but it is serious. Tam students, liberal by majority, have became more aware of politics, politicians, and government than likely thought. In the quest for political activity some Tam students went so far as to actively involve themselves in nuclear disarmament, human rights violations, and even Reagonomics. The latest movement to hit the streets, were the Freeze the Arms Race buttons that Tony Medrano's group hocks for a dollar. Kinda steep for a button, but it's for the cause we heard one student say. The Tam nuclear package also included a terrifying 12-panel display of the Effects of Nuclear War in the mezzanine of the student center and a almost school-wide showing of The Last Epidemic , a very heavy film which Tam was the first high school in the county to view. Besides nuclear awareness, students in Mr. Beldens constitution classes performed mock senate hearings at the Mill Valley City Hall. Clad in three-piece suits, business dresses, and sneakers, these students spent a day reenacting the exact procedures of a senate 'hearing and the passing of bills. With the political trend among Tam high students would it not seem likely that other high schools are catching on? If this trend were to spread, high school could become an effective part of important government functions and decisions. Jr-'X' we AL Christmas At Tam Christmas is a special time at Tam. Students decorate Tam with everything imaginable. This year the seniors at Tam spray-painted Merry Christmas on senior bench and decorated a Christmas tree, placing it in front of Tam. Students participated in several events throughout the Christmas season. The most popular event seemed to be handing out candy canes to friends. The candy canes are a traditional symbol of friendship. Students in the Christmas Club bring beautiful harmony to Tam by caroling through the halls. The choir and orchestra are also in the Christmas spirit. They have a traditional Christmas performance at the Methodist Church for anyone who wants to come. Then there's the Tamalpais Christmas Dance which adds just the right touch to the Christmas season. This year Tam's students spread so much love, happiness, and good spirits to so many people that Santa Claus took some time out to come to Tam to wish all of them a Merry Christmas. I U lx Ki P E Z friends: They pick us up when we're down, they celebrate special moments with us, and they help us cope with school. Friendship is a special part of Tam. Have you ever started the day out on the wrong foot, arrived at school depressed and had your friends revive you? They have a way of making the world seem like a big joke. When parents aren't able to understand teenage problems, friends are. They know what you're going through because they have often been there before. What Would We Do Without Them? Has something exciting happened to you and you've just had to call your friend? A true friend shares your happiness with you. They know what is important to you and they know how to celebrate triumphs. Have teachers, books, and grades ever gotten you down so low that you never thought you would get back up? All of us experience the pressure of school, just having someone to lean on helps. People are one of the main things that make Tam so special, and having friends holds everyone together. Whether it's the teacher-to- teacher, student-to-student, or teacher-to-student relationship, they all help us keep our sanity. What would we do without them? 27 Student Support In a system of education so oriented towards basic learning and discipline, it is refreshing to know that there is still a place where you can just sit down and talk about your problems without worrying about parents or teachers hearing about it. The name of this place is Full Circle, a student support service at Tam directed by former teacher Jimmy Brown. Besides being director, Jimmy Brown helps with homework, gets tutors, rearranges schedules, and helps with finding appropriate schooling after high school. The vocational side is handled by Bill Arthur. He helps with finding work, getting through job interviews, and making connections in the working world. The student counseling is done by Golda Michelson and Janet Jacobsen. They deal with everything from sexual relationships and divorced parents to transfer students who are lost in a new environment. They stress that no matter how large or small the problem, students shouldn't be afraid to just walk in and start talking. Services to f Career Guidance Center Before deciding where to go after high school, one must look into what different schools offer and which of their programs best suit both academic and social needs. Fortunately for Tam students, the Career Guidance Center offers such an opportunity. Representatives from all types of schools come to the C.C1.C. and tell students about all aspects of the school they represent. One can learn about the majors offered at Harvard, the cost of attending state schools as opposed to private universitites, the advantages of a vocational school, the quality of the foreign language department at Lewis and Clark or the possibility of a person who does not meet U.C. minimum requirements gaining admission after attending two years at the College of Marin or Indian Valley Colleges. If financing further education is a problem, the representatives can help. They tell students about how to apply for financial aid from the state, and what aid is offered by the school and how to apply for it. If money is still a problem, representatives from both Army and Navy come and explain how and under what conditions the Armed Forces will finance your education. With the valuable information one can get at C.G.C., it is hoped that every student can make wise choices about college. This year nearly fifty representatives came to Tam and about 750 students attended the discussions about college. Fashion: L 1 3 .. Q fir- NA ,F The 1981-82 school year brought with it new students, new teachers and a new principal. It also brought with it two new fashion crazes - those of knickers and leg warmers. No matter what the weather was like, on any given day a plethora of girls could be seen wearing these articles of clothing. Knickers are usually associated with an old-time golf tournament, but now they are being worn on any occasion. Matched with sneakers or topsiders, and socks ranging from argyle to plain to none, knickers were de reguer for the well-dressed girl on campus. Although it is not apparent what started the knicker craze, once begun it could not be stopped. It is only logical that leg warmers would come along at the same time as knickers. Since knickers end at the knee, their natural complement is leg warmers - thick socks running from the ankle to the knee. This year leg warmers were worn with skirts iacceptablej, or over jeans lfor those with a middle-school mentalityj, or even Qby a daring fewj with knickers. it S L' cropped up as well. The punk the avante garde and the average popular preppies all showed up on campus. The punks were highly visible in their black leather outfits, highlighted with chains, red and blue bandanas, rubber boots and outlandish hairstyles. Though in a minority, the punks added spice to Tam fashion. Prom Bobby Jones To An offshoot of the punk style was the avant garde. Characterized by garish or angular clothing, this group sported orange sweaters, pants made of parachute cloth, and wide padded shoulders. The avant garde consisted of those too mainline to go punk. The last major group on campus was the preppies, those bastions of natural fibers. Possibly the widest spread style, prep meant topsiders, khakies, button-down oxford cloth shirts, and Fair Isle sweaters. Of course prep is not a fad, and will be around forever, but it was nice to have a resurgence this year to give Tam an aura of sophisticiation, dignity, and breeding. .-.. K Sid Vicious J 'rp 'wma fa K sr K L Cars Un Campus Ever since we were in Middle School we have been looking forward to owning our very own car. It seemed that the greatest thing in the world would be to be able to go wherever we wanted whenever we felt like going. No more bumming rides from our parents, no more standing on lonely street corners waiting for stupid buses to show up. Nothing could go wrong if we just owned a car. Then we bought our first car. After owning it for two days, we came back and found a brand new dent the size of a grapefurit. No big deal, nothing could go wrong if we just owned a car, with or without a dent. Next came our first Friday night cruising around in our new car. What fun! We could do whatever we wanted, go wherever we pleased. Only problem was where to go and what to do. Still it was fun, until we got up the next morning and looked inside our car. Sunflower seeds and candy wrappers were scattered everywhere. After we got in, the stifling smell of beer hit us, and then we started the car up and watched the gas needle zoom all the way to E. Saturday was even more fun. Every person we had ever met called us up for a ride to a party. Did anyone pay for gas? Nope! So we decided to siphon some gas in order to drive around all night. Three days later we recovered from what we thought was a terminal case of gas hiccoughs. While driving home from the party, we decided to show how fast our new car was. just as we hit 70mph around the field house corner, red lights began to flash behind us. Our parents understood the first ticket, but the fifth and sixth kinda got on their nerves. Let's not even mention traffic court, the most degrading experience a teen-ager can be put through. lt wasn't my fault, Sir. The accelerator got stuck. Monday we got up and took our car to auto shop. Finally we could work on our own car and feel like a mechanic. Auto shop went greatg we replaced our clutch perfectly, though while driving home we did notice that our four speed had only two speeds. Later we learned our linkage was upside down. No problem, three hundred bucks took care of the whole thing. Who can forget waking up on finals morning dreading the Chemistry final? Weren't we relieved when our dependable car wouldn't even start up? For years we had been looking forward to this? Forget it! Anyone seen my old bus schedule? Anyone want to buy a car? -N.-......J W eu, ,M K.. A- M , ,V Kf' X , W 'Q v 1 , Q, Q Y' 4,, A ' 1 ,1 ' J f .. 4 v ' ' W . ,f , ,AJ ' r 'A V I . I .- Director Michelle Swanson shows 'em how it's done in rehearsal. The Stor Cf Our Ensemble Theatre Compan The Tamalpais Ensemble Theatre Company, which combines all the levels of drama classes, is the only student-run, non-school funded theatre company in the country. The approximately 120-member company survives on grants from the San Francisco fBuckJ Foundation, from which they get approximately 527,000 which ays for guest artists as well as some of the full-time personnel. Unfortunately this grant can only be used to pay for personnel and not equipment, to buy props and eep up the stage in Ruby Scott Auditorium the company must resort to fund raisers. On November 14, E.T.C. had what it called a Dance-a-Thon. For twelve continuous hours nearly a hundred Tam students danced their hearts out to benefit E.T.C. When it was all over, almost 551500 had been collected from sponsors, who had pledged by the hour. In addition to the Dance-a-thon, E.T.C. had bake sales, sold T shirts, and even had a benefit performance by comedian Michael Pritchard. But E.T.C. isn't all fundraising. This year they put on five separate full-length plays and twelve one-acts. The advanced drama class put on an original ada tation of The Point in December, while the first and second year classes held a one-act festival that played over finals week in January. For the spring semester, the advanced class traveled to Sutter Creek, California, to participate in the Mother Lode Festival, which consists of theater workshops and a one-act competition. Michelle Swanson and guest playwright Scott Wren wrote and directed a full-length play for the stagecraft tsecond yearj section called Waste Through the Ages. After playing at Tam in April it went on a brief tour to benefit anti-nuclear groups. The two first- year classes concentrated on a type of theater known as story theater. Over the summer E.T.C. provides a chance for Tam students to act in the Playwrights Festival which will happen on the Tam campus again this summer. i......t This year our drama department's advanced workshop ut on an original adaptation of The Point that had all the earmarks of a professional production. Written by Harry Nilsson, The Point was meant to be a sort of absurd fable with an unusual stance on the state of things in the modernljworld. It is the tale of Oblio, the pointless boy, and his faithful do Arrow. They ave been thrown out of the Lana? of Point and have to travel through the dreaded Pointless Forest. With a soothing mixture of song, dance, and prose, the Point explains who has a point and who does not, but most important, it explains how this decision is reached. Without bombarding you with unneeded propaganda, the show revealed many problems and injustices in the world we live in. To add to the experience the play was done in the round, without any of the layers leaving the stage at any point durin the play. Instead of laying to the audience, the actors played skildfully with the audience. This gave the audience the feeling that they weren't just watching the players go through the plot, but actually feeling the action and releasing very real emotions. At times the cast would go into the audience and carry on actual conversations with them, asking questions about the play and explaining confusing parts in the plot. of humor and powerful acting talent to the pointless Oblie, while Greg Ballora sprinkled just the right amount of baby-talking nonsense onto his confusion ridden face as the faithful dog Arrow. Without showing the slightest signs of a weakness, the rest of the Ensemble performed brilliantly. Terrifically ortrayed emotions rolled off the animated faces of Lili Cunningham and Lupe Gidley, while Ivan Corkland broke the audience up with his hilarious dottering old man. The concise and beautiful choreography done by guest artist Edward Blair, Qwho did the Dr. Pepper television commercialsj, combined with the involved direction of Michelle Swanson for a memorable experience. The Point also toured with the Bread and Roses organization from February throu h June, playing before audiences in schooTs, rest homes, and prisons. Twelve groups of first and second year drama students started organizing the One-Act Festival in early November and by the time erformance week rolled around over finals week they were ready. After tireless weeks spent in rehearsal pin- pointing every small detail, all the work ended up depending on only two rushed hours of lighting rehearsal. But student lighting expert Bernice Hurley and her crew of' technicians pulled it off with style. The final product was a series of polished profes- sional looking performances which thoroughly entertained everyone who went. There was not one single weak link in the string of plays that performed this year, and everyone involved had an incredibly educational as well as enjoyable ex- perience. Students who went on a similar tour with the Marin Youth Orchestra in 1979 were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of their audiences. The Tam High Musicians, in accepting their invitation, made an enormous commitment. They worked all year to master the music given them by the committee. They also gave a number of concerts all over the Bay Area - Concerts to Vienna - in order to raise money needed to make the trip this summer. Seniors Mike Pedrazzinni, Paul Rhodes, and Junior Charles Chandler, all members of the Tam Orchestra, attended the Festival in 1979 with the Marin Youth Orchestra. After Pop Owen's death in 1936, the instrumental music program was continued by Raymond Pittenger and then his widow Mabel Pittenger, who is credited with keeping the program going during World War II, when most schools dropped music. One of the rewards of her efforts was that a young wartime student named Robert Greenwood became so interested in music that he continued to study, returning to his alma mater in 1951 to direct its instrumental music program. Now senior faculty member in the Tamalpais District and state chairman of the National School Orchestra Association, Robert Greenwood will conclude his thirtieth year at Tam High by conducting his students in Vienna. We sub- mamma. I as 11 That Jazz! Through the years, music styles have ranged from flappers to Elvis and from straw hats to punk rock . Music has always been around, but the styles come and go very quickly. Jazz started in the Roaring 20's and has remained ever since in the hearts of everyone. More and more jazz bands are emerging everywhere. We have our own jazz band here at Tam. It all started out as a simple sheet of music and turned into an obsession. Soon rehearsals started everyday at lunch up in the Band Box. Anyone passing by could hear the sweet melody of Jazz played by the Green Dolphin Street Trio. Soon that band was off and playing at parties, meetings, and concerts. A true success. There are other Jazz groups that are roaming our cam- pus. The Charades and the Barbershop Quartet! The Charades do swinging songs from the 40's and 5O's, while the Barbershoppers break out their hats and canes to sing a good 'ol song for Mammy . During the spring, the Barbershop Quartet and the Green Dol- phin Street Trio gave a Jazz concert for the student body to prove that there really is jazz talent at Tam. The Club met almost every day at Mead Wall to discuss patriotism, freedom, and justice. The main purpose of the club was to raise the moral standards at Tam High, promote patriotism the American way, freedom, and justice. This was done by several methods: propaganda, displays of partiotism and high morals, and through the music of the club's band Knot the band's clubj, the Rat Boys. The music of the Rat Boys and other similar bands 1-?S The Rat Boys ul, L. Club gave one a real sense of Americana as it stands today and where we are headed in the future. The club activities included many field trips to such places as Mabuhay Gardens, the Elite Club, California Hall, Tenth Street Hall, the Sound of Music, and Target Video. The purpose of these trips was to search for and find patriotism and Americana in its truest form. Eventually the club found it in the alley behind Mabuhay Gardens. Other club activities included several All- American picnics and a trip to Sacramento to see the new state capitol. -if '-:, 15 SEQ it gf 4 ?at'Q7.Q1f?lig vi Sv? 316 isis-,gixQ'yiS,mf3! - fs'ef.7tf'?i i gvtlftligxfis: if v ii C - ' C. 9.6ea,fwfi and if A C bs, 1 v kkisgag N ., his Lf: S1 Ott' H A -tsl A , Q - 4 JIS.. -5 ' 1 X iii M 1 Club Members ftop rowjz Mike Stupinski, Tyler Johnson Bottom row: Adam Rat Boy, John Lighty, Mitzy Carlough, Samantha Taylor Model United Nations First row: Michele Akin, Missy Fitch, Jody Silberman, Melisa Williams, Kim Dresler. The Tam News staff, led by advisor Dick Fregulia, featured many intelligent contributors who combined their efforts to produce a unique newspaper. This paper was produced in a magazine format, and proved to be more attractive than other issues produced in the past. First semester co-editors Jeff Cain and Laurie Blau helped to keep the paper in decent shape and the staff's capable photographers added a needed dimension to the paper. Articles written by the staff added reading variety. The Tam News staff should be proud of their effort for this school year, and let's hope that the future staff members can keep up the tradition of a well-done school paper. Bike racing is an energetic sport that is probably tougher than football. It is certainly more dangerous. Cycling calls for strength, en- durance, and a lot of quick reactions. Races were held throughout the year, decreasing in the winter but picking up again in the spring. Races were on Sundays and usually twenty miles long. They were held all over the Bay Area, and racers went as far as Santa Cruz or Sacramento to race. The Tamites who raced did very well this season. They usually placed in the top six. iAbovel The start of the Sausalito Criterium, Septem- ber 2.7, 1981. After The Rains Came 1 ' Frat At Tam: Zeta Psi Pl When the average mortal hears the word fraternity' he immediately thinks of the movie Animal House. This is rather unfortunate since that is not the way it is. But have no fear - Zeta Psi Pi is here. That's right, Tam's very own frat, and thankfully it is of the highest standards and quality. You may ask yourself what does a fraternity do? Well according to Zeta Psi Pi founders Greg Stanger and Jeff Cain, the purpose is to prepare the brethren to make a significant 'positive contribution to society. Though the frat is not associated with the school it is open to Tam students, females don't worry it's a coed fraternity. If you feel you are capable of hold truth, justice, and the American way, and feel you can exemplify fine dress and manners you may want to fill out an application funderclassmen bewarel. The application is simply a means of getting to know you and your accomplishments. You will be asked such questions as major high school achievements, test scores, and other academic questions. lf you are accepted fbased on your applicationj you must then go through initiation. You will not be made to eat goldfish or climb a flagpole, but you may be required to slither across the football field without the use of your hands or arms. So if you feel you ar of high caliber and have something positive to add to Zeta Psi Pi and! or the school, consider applying. No one is guaranteed admittance but all applications will be considered. If you want an application or have questions talk to founders Stanger or Cain. www' k an .Q Q, 'F S - if Q iF vw x ., X5 y 'ffm K 1-N , 'Nqr Ted Mitchell, Principal dministration Because of the Tam District's teacher layoffs during the summer, there were many changes in Tam's administration. On the opening day of school, Tam leaders were found in the top spots in all three district high schools. Principal jim Hanretty had been transferred to Redwood, and Norm Cady, former assistant principal, was now the new principal at Drake. On the home front, Ted Mitchell had been promoted from assistant principal to principal. Mike Campas moved to Mr. Mitchell's old spot and Lila Wilkins became management assistant. Clyde Krusinski, who had been layed off from his p.e. position, was hired back to fill Mr. Cady's position. Despite these drastic changes, all concerned seemed to be taking things well. Tam's students gave their new principal a rousing applause at the opening day assembly. Lila Wilkins, Management Assistant -Jo ,, .-mtl! l Clyde Krusinski, Assistant Principal Q dent activities! Student Teachers Norman Dea Music iyw Terry Smith English Regan Foiles English Adrienne Weishaupt Alan Ggrdon Reading English Dick Raines Liz Brouse Stan Cooper Teachers In Exile On February 24, 1981 the Tamalpais Board of Trustees passed Resolution 418 which approved Superinten- dent Anthony Trujillo's roposal for drastic budget cuts. In june of that year the result translated to teach- er layoffs. Seven of Tam's full time, long-standing, current teachers were told they would not be hired back. They were, in essence, furloughed to substitute teaching and a place on the rehiring list should dis- trict enrollments or budgets turn around. Of the seven, only one has been hired back for 1982- 83. That is math teacher Stan Cooper, who spent the 1981-82 year teaching at Marin Academy. Some of the exiled favorites were still on campus, but not as full time teachers. Jimmy Brown returned to head a feder- ally funded student support service known as Pull Circle. Liz Brouse became a travel agent, but returned frequently to substitute. Ruth Kilby substituted. Chuck Smith taught a night course but took up full- time employment as a private school instructor in Oakland. Dick Raines appeared with the Christmas Club caroling in the halls, but was last seen living in Santa Cruz enjoying life. The Pai staff extends its warmest feelings to those teachers in exile. They are still a fondly remembered part of the whole Tam family. XB.
