The world has been going through trying times. Vast amounts of paper wealth have vanished into thin air. Thousands of those who were considered wealthy have come face to face with want. The days of easy money have ended- it may be for all time. Vlfhat, then, is there left to which we can cling? lVlaterial Wealth, the God of the past generation, has proved a false Ciiod. VVe must go hack to a hetter foundation for life -to character and high ideals. Education must not only prepare us to make a living, which is in many ways a secondary consideration, hut it must tit us to live full spiritual lives. XVe must derive from our education a love for our neighbor. VVe must develop a social consciousness. That is the greatest need of the world today. Unless we, the educated people of this and the next generation, recognize the right of every nian to live, free from Want and privation, a life full of joy and hope, the hasis of our civilization will crumble and the American spirit of individualism Will he no more. If our high school education gives us these ideals then it is worth while-if not, it is so much husks and straw. li. E. WOOD Thirteen
