BASKETBALL The Hawks' 1942-43 basketball team, winner of both the South Half Iowa Cedar League Conference and Tama County Tournament, will long be remembered as one of the shortest evenly built teams that Tama has had for some time. Although getting off to a bad start in their first game, they came back to win 17 and drop only 5. The Hawks dropped out of the state running in the finals of the sectional tournament by losing to a strong Montour quintet, whom the Hawks had beaten twice previously. Opening the season with Montezuma there, in what was scheduled as only a practice game, the Hawks met their first defeat to the tune of 19 to 25. Coming back strong, they walked around Garwin 32 to 14. Then, for the first home game of the sea- son, the Hawks turned in a very good show by downing Gilman 44 to 19. Continuing with their winning streak, they journeyed to Belle Plaine to play the first conference game, the outcome of this not being decided until the closing minutes. Final score 33 to 26. To the score of 21 to 15 the Hawks met their first scheduled defeat at the hands of Keystone. The Bears of Brooklyn were the next in line, and they, also, defeated the Hawks in a very closely played game-17 to 15. Then it was that the Hawks started on the upward trend, winning six games in a row before being stopped by Montour at Montour. Montezuma came first with a 28 to 21 victory: then Montour, 36 to 30: Marengo, a conference rival, stooped to a 35 to 30 defeat. Belle Plaine, in their return game, again bowed to defeat by a 25 to 19 margin. Then to even the score for the previous defeat, the Hawks bounced Brooklyn in the clos- ing quarter 27 to 21. 35 to 16 was the next score but this time in favor of Montour. This was the Hawks worst defeat of the season. Toledo and Marengo were the next two to go down by scores of 40 to 20 and 31 to 23 respectively. This closed the season for the Hawks in scheduled games. The sectional tourna- ment at Montour was next in line. In their first three games, the Hawks had hardly any trouble. First Dunbar 24 to 35 victory: LeGrand by a 62 to 11 margin, then Toledo by a 54 to 26 score. This moved the Hawks up to the finals with Montour, but they failed to make the grade. The final score of the season was 39 to 20. This officially closed the season for the team of 42-43, a team that should long be remembered in Tama High. Those who will be missed from the line-up next year are all the first five men: for- wards--Bob Alexander and Bill Corns, center-Fred Van de Walle, and guards-Frankie Hardon and Duane Cory.

Their records will long live in the annals of their high school Alma Mater. Starting the season with ten seniors and one junior, Coach Hoskins, assisted by Mr. Rogers, built a team that went through the entire season untied and undefeated. They had only a six point total scored against them. Coach Hoskins was called into military service before the end of the season, and Mr. Rogers finished out the season. The first game of the season was with the Spartens of Grundy Center at Tama. In this game the Hawks won by a 13 to O victory. The next rival for the Hawks was Nevada in a non-conference game. On a bad night, with about an inch oi snow on the ground, the Hawks beat them. also. by a score of 13 to 0. In the previous year at Colfax, we had received a nice defeat, and we wanted to give it back. This we did, the score-14 to U. Then the first conference game with Belle Plaine at Tama. The Hawks, although coming out with a 7 to 0 victory, played their worst game of the season. The next game was with the Brooklyn Bears at Brooklyn. This game. tumed out to be a one sided affair with a 38 to 0 margin. Monte was the next eleven to meet the Hawks. After the Hawks started rolling they rolled up a 40 to O. Then came the game to see which team would take top honors in the conference, Marengo or Tama. The Hawks made their bid when they scored early in the fourth quarter. Marengo threatened once, but the Hawks held them on the one yard line for four downs. This was a goal line stand that will long be remembered in Tama. On November ll came the annual Traer-Tama Armistice Day game. Before the sound of the final gun the Hawks had sustained a great loss. The Hawks had been scored on for the first time this year-final score 21 to 6. Then the final game of the season with the Hawks' northern rival, Toledo. The final score being 46 to 0. This year set many outstanding records that the teams of the future may strive to break. First, the Hawks were untied and undefeated: ne xt, they had a total of only 6 points scored against them. Third, in the Toledo game the Hawks held them to no first-in-tens, Fourth, also in this game the Hawks never once had to punt. Some of the boys received mention throughout the state. On the third I. D. P. A. All State Team, Bill Coms won the half back post. On the Iack North All State Team, Captain Bob Alexander made the sixth team. Also to receive honorable menion on these teams were Iim Rucker at a tackle, Frankie Hardon at the quarter- back, and Kenneth Porter at the guard. The following boys will be missed next year from the starting line-up because of graduation: Bill Coms, Capt., Bob Alexander, Frankie Hardon, Kenneth Porter, lim Rucker, Iohn Thill, George LaMasters, Russell Shope, Duane Cory.
